Who really cares how many Iraqis have died? Certainly not BushCo. But thanks to CLG and this article, we have a better idea:

The Americans learned one lesson from Vietnam: don't count the civilian dead. As a result, no one knows how many Iraqis have been killed in the five years since the invasion. Estimates put the toll at between 100,000 and one million. 19 Mar 2008 The British polling firm Opinion Research Business (ORB) asked 1,720 Iraqi adults last summer if they had lost family members by violence since 2003; 16% had lost one, and 5% two. Using the 2005 census total of 4,050,597 households in Iraq, this suggests 1,220,580 deaths since the invasion.

That's roughly equivalent to the population of Dallas, Texas. Now imagine every person there dead.

Now imagine no more Iraq occupation.

While the Bush administration has stuck to an impossibly low death toll, Iraq Body Count has that figure up to as high as 90,000 casualties. The controversial Lancet study from 2006 estimated over 650,000 deaths, and Opinion Research Business estimated that number to be well over one million. How can there be such a disparity in these figures?

Civilian death toll in Iraq: Over a milliion

For you this evening, from my paper this morning:

A car bomb blew up in the capital's Shiite Muslim neighborhood of Sadr City on Thursday, killing at least four people, as a new survey suggested that the civilian death toll from the war could be more than 1 million.

The figure from ORB, a British polling agency that has conducted several surveys in Iraq, followed statements this week from the U.S. military defending itself against accusations it was trying to play down Iraqi deaths to make its strategy appear successful.

Froomkin:

In the alternate universe that President Bush occupies, he gave a smashing speech last night.
Over there, the people of Iraq need our help to save them from the al Qaeda terrorists who intend to overthrow their brave and united government on the way to attacking America. It's a battle of good versus evil. We have 36 countries fighting alongside us. And the fight is going very well indeed. Ordinary life is returning to Baghdad.
A few more things about Bush's universe: There, the president can make things true simply by solemnly pronouncing them from the Oval Office. He can reach out to his critics just by saying he is doing so. And people believe him.
But over here in the real world, things are different.
