Harvard historian Niall Ferguson argues that Barack Obama's plans to increase income taxes for wealthy Americans could lead to an economic climate similar to the "stagflation" period of the 1970's.

Professor and historian Niall Ferguson asks what the ramifications of the subprime crisis will be in the realm of grand strategy and politics.

Is this an historical turning point, marking a decisive shift in financial power from West to East? Or are rumours of the death of the dollar and the decline of American empire exaggerated? - Hoover Institution

Senior Pakistani officials say their country is within days of defaulting on its foreign debt repayments and is in dire need of monetary aid.

But as is often the case, it's the country's poorest who are most desperately in need of help.

http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2008/11/restoring_confidence.html

Michael Ettlinger of the Center for American Progress offers his thoughts on the Treasury's about face on the economic rescue plan as President-elect Barack Obama and a new Congress will take office in less than 70 days amid the greatest financial market and economic challenges our nation has faced since the Great Depression. The economy is likely in a recession—one that could be a long and deep. We are engaged in two wars overseas. Skyrocketing health care costs are consuming too great a share of our economy and threatening to create an unsustainable national debt. Our continued heavy reliance on fossil fuels exposes our economy to volatile oil prices and supply disruptions as well as the potentially catastrophic costs of climate change in the coming decades.

Aggressive action is needed to restore economic confidence and growth. We need action now to stimulate the economy, starting at once and lasting as long as necessary. Immediate government investments can put us on a path to recovery while also speeding the arrival of accessible, affordable health care, an economy powered with clean, sustainable, and secure sources of energy, and an education system that prepares our children for good jobs and keeps good jobs in America. These steps will help the economy through a period of economic weakness and lay the foundation for shared economic growth in the decades to come.

These investments in economic stimulus and recovery will contribute to a higher budget deficit in the short term. But we cannot be penny wise and pound foolish. Strong economic growth will do far more to put us on the path of fiscal health than shortchanging needed investments today.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said he was backing away from buying troubled mortgage assets using a $700 billion bailout fund, instead favouring a second round of capital injections into financial institutions that would match private funds.

"This is bringing uncertainty into the market, creating a sense that the Treasury doesn't know what it's doing," said Philippe Gijsels, strategist at Fortis in Brussels.

John McCain
Lakeville, MN 10/10/08

TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: China is going to be a super power. My friends, it is. So we have to accept that and the question is, is how we handle China as they enter the world's stage. And, there are many disappointments to me about China. There are some things that I am, uh, pleased about. But, overall China has not shown the maturity in some of their behavior that is in keeping with that of a world super power. If you watched the Beijing Olympics you saw how China is now a world power. But you also saw where they repressed Tibetans, where they didn't allow anybody to demonstrate against their government, where they have, when someone puts something up on the internet that they don't like, they throw them in jail, there's a lot of progress that China has got to be made but it has to be a constructive relationship. But no, I'm very disturbed by the fact that we, that China owns that much of out debt but we have no one to blame but ourselves because of our overspending practices. I don't blame the Chinese, I blame us for having that kind of fiscal irresponsibility that has led us to a situation such as that is.

http://www.webofdebt.com/
Until recently, most people had never even heard of derivatives; but in terms of money traded, these investments represent the biggest financial market in the world. Derivatives are financial instruments that have no intrinsic value but derive their value from something else. Basically, they are just bets. You can hedge your bet that something you own will go up by placing a side bet that it will go down. Hedge funds hedge bets in the derivatives market. Bets can be placed on anything, from the price of tea in China to the movements of specific markets.

The point everyone misses, wrote economist Robert Chapman a decade ago, is that buying derivatives is not investing. It is gambling, insurance and high stakes bookmaking. Derivatives create nothing.1 They not only create nothing, but they serve to enrich non-producers at the expense of the people who do create real goods and services. In congressional hearings in the early 1990s, derivatives trading was challenged as being an illegal form of gambling. But the practice was legitimized by Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan, who not only lent legal and regulatory support to the trade but actively promoted derivatives as a way to improve risk management. Partly, this was to boost the flagging profits of the banks; and at the larger banks and dealers, it worked. But the cost was an increase in risk to the financial system as a whole.2

Since then, derivative trades have grown exponentially, until now they are larger than the entire global economy. The Bank for International Settlements recently reported that total derivatives trades exceeded one quadrillion dollars thats 1,000 trillion dollars.3 How is that figure even possible? The gross domestic product of all the countries in the world is only about 60 trillion dollars. The answer is that gamblers can bet as much as they want. They can bet money they dont have, and that is where the huge increase in risk comes in.

Credit default swaps (CDS) are the most widely traded form of credit derivative. CDS are bets between two parties on whether or not a company will default on its bonds. In a typical default swap, the protection buyer gets a large payoff from the protection seller if the company defaults within a certain period of time, while the protection seller collects periodic payments from the protection buyer for assuming the risk of default. CDS thus resemble insurance policies, but there is no requirement to actually hold any asset or suffer any loss, so CDS are widely used just to increase profits by gambling on market changes. In one bloggers example, a hedge fund could sit back and collect $320,000 a year in premiums just for selling protection on a risky BBB junk bond. The premiums are free money free until the bond actually goes into default, when the hedge fund could be on the hook for $100 million in claims.

And theres the catch: what if the hedge fund doesnt have the $100 million? The funds corporate shell or limited partnership is put into bankruptcy; but both parties are claiming the derivative as an asset on their books, which they now have to write down. Players who have hedged their bets by betting both ways cannot collect on their winning bets; and that means they cannot afford to pay their losing bets, causing other players to also default on their bets.

The dominos go down in a cascade of cross-defaults that infects the whole banking industry and jeopardizes the global pyramid scheme. The potential for this sort of nuclear reaction was what prompted billionaire investor Warren Buffett to call derivatives weapons of financial mass destruction. It is also why the banking system cannot let a major derivatives player go down, and it is the banking system that calls the shots. The Federal Reserve is literally owned by a conglomerate of banks; and Hank Paulson, who heads the U.S. Treasury, entered that position through the revolving door of investment bank Goldman Sachs, where he was formerly CEO.

The discussion was moderated by Ezra Klein, Associate Editor at The American Prospect.

Health care is one of the most important issues concerning Americans this election season. More than 45 million Americans do not have health insurance—a reality that has dire consequences for both individuals and the economy.

Policymakers across the political spectrum agree that we need to make health care more affordable and more accessible to all Americans. But when it comes down to the issues—should reform come from the federal government, or states? how should we construct tax credits? what about high-risk pools?—differences emerge.

http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/domestic

Who's to blame for the global financial crisis? A cynical conservative agenda that rewrote the rules for the rich. Today, working Americans feel less and less secure, and their prospects for economic mobility seem more and more remote. People are working longer hours than ever before, change jobs more frequently, and have more volatile incomes. Forty-seven million live without health insurance. Few are represented by a union. Many face tough competition from lower-wage workers abroad. The land of the American Dream now has less inter-generational income mobility than many other developed countries. Family incomes have risen on average within generations only because the incomes of women have risen as their participation in the workforce has grown dramatically; incomes of men have stagnated. The additional income from the second earner is essential to cover the rising cost of healthcare, energy, and childcare, among other things.

Each of the traditional pathways to progress is littered with roadblocks. Incomes are not rising; the historical link between greater productivity and higher wages has broken down. Personal savings in the United States is near record lows. From pre-school through high school, we are failing to prepare many for college and the workplace. Those who begin degree or credential programs to improve earnings complete them at alarmingly low rates. Until recently, homeownership was a pathway to wealth accumulation, but many now see their equity slipping away. American workers feel less secure with good reason. Their prospects for getting ahead are more limited. Working hard and playing by the rules is not enough.

In recent years, economic growth has been relatively strong, but the economy has added jobs at a lackluster rate compared to similar times in the economic cycle. The share of the nation’s income that goes to those in the middle is lower than it has been in 50 years. The benefits of economic growth have all flown to those ...

It's hard work trying to get everybody to come out of the closet at the same time. This includes academia, their presidents, Congress, the US Department of Education, the students, graduates, Sallie Mae and the other lenders. Let's see how many of them we can flush out over a period of time. How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop? What is the core of that truth? The world may never know. In a creative nut, this video explores and exposes 10 interesting facts about the student loan industry that ya really ought to know about. This video goes by many names. Themes that come to mind include the de-value of higher education and spank that monkey. The revolution will not be televised since it's gonna be on the net. Check it out at student loan justice dot org. www.studentloanjustice.org There is a class action that has been filed against Sallie Mae but only includes "minorities" that have been wronged by Sallie Mae. So, if you know any minorities that can be included in this class action, the more the merrier. Even if "non-minorities" don't have a voice, let the minorities shut em down. groups.google.com Student Loan Class Action www.sprengerlang.com groups.google.com The list below provides information about individuals who appear to have been the most instrumental in the changes in Higher Education Act, and personally gained the most from the changes. As research continues, this list is refined. 1. Congressmen John Boehner, Howard "Buck" Mckeon, and Senator Mike 2. Albert Lord and Thomas Fitzpatrick, Chairman and CEO of Sallie Mae. 3. Rose Dinapoli, Former Vice President of Governmental and Industry Relations for Sallie Mae 5. Harrison Wadsworth III, Lobbyist 6. James Lintzenich, and the executive staff of the USA Group. 7. Barry Munitz
