In the struggling global economy, the falling price of oil should come as good news for consumers.

But in Jordan, petrol station owners continue to feel the pain. Without government subsidies to protect their profits, they're now being forced to sell petrol at a loss. And it's pushing some of them out of business.

Independent media bottled water example

Much of our bottled water comes from municipal water systems at a cost of about 7000 times tap water. The environmental cost to make and discard the bottles is high and unnecessary. 20 million barrels of oil are used each year to make the bottles. An estimated 60 million plastic water bottles are thrown away each day. We would not know this if independent watchdog groups and independent media had not scooped corporate media with the story.

Many of Israel's quarter of a million Holocaust survivors are currently living below the poverty line. The Israeli government has offered a new million dollar package for survivors, but they say the offer, which amounts to around 20 dollars per person a month is insulting. Jacky Rowland reports.
