There is more turbulence on Wall Street. As the week began, credit loosened up and stock markets slowly regained lost ground, but just as there was a sigh of relief, Wednesday brought another sharp drop in the Dow Jones Index and investor worries grew that economies around the world are weakening rapidly.

Consider this: some of the billion poorest people in the world, 70 per cent of whom live in Africa, have been recipients of foreign aid from Western nations.

Yet despite this aid, during times of immense global success there have been tremendous development failures. On this show Riz asks how the developing nations will be affected in the face of a potential global economic crisis.

On Thursday's Riz Khan we speak to Yash Tandon, the executive director of the South Centre, an intergovernmental organisation of developing countries. The South Centre examines development problems and provides intellectual and policy support to these countries. Professor Tandon does not believe that the African continent is likely to be affected by the global credit crunch.

Also joining the program is Razia Khan, she is head of research for Africa at Standard Chartered bank. And Todd Moss, a senior fellow and the director of The Emerging Africa Project at the Center for Global Development. Most recently he served as the deputy assistant secretary in the Bureau of African Affairs at the US Department of State from May 2007 to October 2008.

Earth Institute Director Jeffrey Sachs outlines what are, in his view, the three greatest challenges to peace the world will face over the next several years.

-----

One of the world's leading experts in aid and economic and sustainable development, Professor Jeffrey Sachs, gave a free public lecture at the University of Sydney on Tuesday, 15 July, 2008, to mark the opening of the University's new Institute for Sustainable Solutions.

Professor Jeffrey Sachs is Professor of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University and the director of The Earth Institute at Columbia, an organisation that leads large-scale efforts to promote sustainability throughout the world.

Professor Sachs is one of the leading international voices for combining economic development with environmental sustainability and is also a special advisor to the United National secretary-general.

His free public lecture marks the officially opening of the University of Sydney's Institute for Sustainable Solutions - Sydney Institute

Jeffrey Sachs is Director of the Earth Institute, where he is also a professor of sustainable development. The unconventional and impassioned economist advocates combining economic development with environmental sustainability. Through the Earth Institute and as Professor of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University, Sachs has analyzed challenges of economic development, poverty alleviation, and globalization for more than twenty years.

Over 70% of the Development Gateway Foundation's employees are in the developing world, not in Washington, says Gerhard Pohl, and they work in a virtual world around the clock. This is possible because of sophisticated work platforms and open source solutions, making small organizations very competitive.

Representives from more than 30 countries have met in Geneva in an attempt to conclude talks that began seven years ago. The Doha round of talks, as they are known, are aimed at reducing trade barriers and aiding developing countries to promote free trade. The main sticking points surround the demand by developing nations for the richer ones to receive lower agricultural subsidies while industrialised nations are asking for countries with emerging markets to reduce import duties. Inside Story asks if the Doha round can be saved.

Prosperity and Inequality: Debates in India and China Keynote Address by Kemal Dervis

India and China are emerging as major players in the global political economy of this century, having enjoyed record growth rates for the past five years. Yet each faces major social and economic challenges. Both countries are dealing with growing social unrest, widespread poverty, and rising energy needs in a world market shaped by dwindling oil supplies.

China's growth is creating massive disparities between its urban and rural sectors, resulting in protests against state authority and restless migrant populations. Citizens face a steady degradation of public health due to runaway industrial growth, while capitalists chafe against the state's tight control of the market. In India, the epidemic of suicides among farmers and episodes of violence against minorities have cast doubts on the benefits of wholesale economic liberalization, unfettered foreign investment, and growth, which are also being challenged by the rise of judicial activism and of an active, vocal civil society.

The India China Institute at The New School, now in its third year of sponsoring fellowships, public debates, and research collaborations between experts in India, China, and the United States, is hosting "Prosperity and Inequality: Debates in India and China," a major conference exploring these issues. Participants in the conference, including our own fellows from all three countries as well as experts on urbanization, globalization, and growth in India and China, will discuss Chinese and Indian urbanization and wealth formation, the social and political risks associated with skyrocketing growth in two massive agrarian societies, alternative designs for development in each society, and the quest in both societies for a "third way" of development that combines the virtues of socialism and capitalism without sacrificing democracy and grassroots inclusion - The New School

Kemal Derviş started as the new head of the United Nations Development Program, the UN's global development network, on August 15, 2005. Currently he also serves as the Chair of the United Nations Development Group (UNDP), a committee consisting of the heads of all UN funds, programs, and departments working on development issues.

Prior to his appointment with UNDP, Mr. Derviş was a member of the Turkish Parliament, representing Istanbul from November 2002 to June 2005. From March 2001 to August 2002, he was the Minister for Economic Affairs and the Treasury of the Republic of Turkey. In August of 2002, he resigned from his Ministerial post and was elected to Parliament.

Author and activist Maude Barlow warns of a coming global ecological crisis resulting from a scarcity of clean drinking water.

-----

Maude Barlow talks about Blue Covenant: The Global Water Crisis and the Coming Battle for the Right to Water.

In their international bestseller Blue Gold, Maude Barlow and co-author Tony Clarke exposed how a handful of corporations are gaining ownership and control of the earth's dwindling water supply, depriving millions of people around the world of access to this most basic of resources and accelerating the onset of a global water crisis.

Blue Covenant, the sequel to Blue Gold, describes a powerful response to this trend: the emergence of an international, grassroots-led movement to have water declared a basic human right, something that can't be bought or sold for profit - Book Passage

Maude Barlow is the National Chairperson of The Council of Canadians, Canada's largest public advocacy organization, and the co-founder of the Blue Planet Project, working internationally for the right to water. She serves on the boards of the International Forum on Globalization and Food and Water Watch, as well as being a Councillor with the Hamburg-based World Future Council.

Maude is the recipient of six honorary doctorates, the 2005/2006 Lannan Cultural Freedom Fellowship Award, and the 2005 Right Livelihood Award (known as the "Alternative Nobel") for her global water justice work. She is also the best-selling author or co-author of sixteen books, including Blue Gold: The Fight to Stop Corporate Theft of the World's Water and the recently released Blue Covenant: The Global Water Crisis and the Coming Battle for the Right to Water.
