Over 70% of the Development Gateway Foundation's employees are in the developing world, not in Washington, says Gerhard Pohl, and they work in a virtual world around the clock. This is possible because of sophisticated work platforms and open source solutions, making small organizations very competitive.

Today, in New York City, world leaders will meet to discuss the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), eight time-bound, measurable goals that they set in the year 2000 to combat global poverty. These ambitious objectives were promises made to the poor, meant to hold world leaders accountable for ending global poverty by 2015. Today, we are halfway there.

That's why YouTube, Will.i.am, and nonprofit organizations Oxfam, GCAP, Save the Children and Comic Relief are launching "In My Name," a global effort to raise awareness around these goals -- and to give you the opportunity to tell your leaders to do more.

http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2008/06/sustainable_security2.html

The increasing involvement of the U.S. armed forces in addressing the basic human needs of civilians abroad represents one of the most profound changes in U.S. strategic thought and practice in at least a generation. The Pentagon is recognizing that conventional "kinetic" military operations, which utilize armed force through direct action to kill or capture the enemy, have limited utility in countering the threats posed by militant extremism. Therefore, they are searching for—and finding—"non-kinetic" options other than the use of force to tackle the non-violent components of pressing security problems, both in and out of warzones.

This may seem like an appropriate approach to America's new security challenges in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, but it is not without controversy. The increasing involvement of the U.S. military in civilian assistance activities has launched a contentious debate about the role of the military in global development, and the relevance of global development to American national security. Non-governmental organizations argue that the "militarization" of development assistance threatens to undermine the moral imperatives of poverty reduction, the neutral provision of emergency relief, and the security of civilian aid workers in the field.

Non-military government agencies, most prominently the U.S. State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development, have demonstrated a complex ambivalence about the subject. Even as their bureaucracies have changed to accommodate the military's growing role in providing assistance, some rank-and-file staff at USAID have argued that the military's programs do not constitute "real development" work, while a vocal minority of foreign service officers in the State Department have protested their deployment to promote political reconciliation in active warzones as hazardous assignments inappropriate for professional ...

Complete video at: fora.tv

Director of the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood Susan Linn talks about her FTC complaint filed against Disney's Baby Einstein as "false and deceptive marketing."

-----

From the author of Consuming Kids, a clarion call for preserving play in our material world, a book every parent will want to read.

In the nationally celebrated Consuming Kids, Susan Linn provided an unsparing look at how modern childhood is molded by commercialism. The resulting threat to children's play is the subject of her timely and fascinating new book.

In The Case for Make Believe, Linn argues that, while play is crucial to human development, nurturing creative play in modern-day America is not only countercultural--it's a threat to corporate profits.

At the heart of the book are gripping stories of children at home, at school, and in a therapist's office using make believe to grapple with real-life issues from entering kindergarten to the death of a sibling.

In an age when toys come from TV shows, dress-up means wearing Disney costumes, and parents believe Baby Einstein is educational, Linn lays out the inextricable links between play, creativity, and health, showing us why we need to protect our children from corporations that aim to limit their imaginations - Cody's Books

Susan Linn is the associate director of the Media Center at Judge Baker Children's Center, instructor in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and director of The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood.

John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
Allentown, PA 04/30/08

TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: " . . . What's going to happen to the funding for research programs in universities across the nation . . . ?

JOHN MCCAIN: "I think obviously we have to encourage it and we have to fund it. But it brings up a larger issue . . . I think we need to fund it . . . We have to knit it all that together. But one of the problems I see in Washington today is there's a competition . . . for funds which sometimes is dependent upon the political influence of the groups or individuals or cause or technology that they want funded as opposed to frankly an objective view. And there's never enough money . . . so rather than have it decided, with all due respect, by my colleagues in Congress I'd like to see a group of Americans appointed by the president who are the best in their business . . . objective scientific opinion and knowledge so that they can say, ok, here's our first priority . . . here's our second, here's our third, here's our fourth . . . I think that all of us could be better served in the funding . . . by getting the smartest people in America together and have them make the recommendations. Maybe congress wouldn't always follow those recommendations but at least we'd have a basis . . . "

http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2008/06/sustainable_security.html

That much of the world has lost faith in America bodes ill for our national security because our role in the world is secured not simply by our military power or economic clout, but also by our ability to compel other nations to follow our lead. The next president will have the opportunity to craft a modern national security strategy that can equip the United States to lead a majority of capable, democratic states in pursuit of a global common good—a strategy that can guide a secure America that is the world’s “champion for all of us.”

But positioning America to lead in a 21st century world will take more than extending a hand to our allies, fixing a long list of misdirected policies, or crafting a new national security strategy that is tough but also smart. With globalization providing the immutable backdrop to our foreign policy, America is today competing on a global playing field that is more complex, dynamic, and interdependent and thus far less certain than in the past.

Leading in this new world will require a fundamental shift from our outdated notion of national security to a more modern concept of sustainable security—that is, our security as defined by the contours of a world gone global and shaped by our common humanity. Sustainable security combines three approaches:

    * National security, or the safety of the United States
* Human ƒsecurity, or the well-being and safety of people
* Collective ƒsecurity, or the shared interests of the entire world

Sustainable security, in short, can shape our continued ability to simultaneously prevent or defend against real-time threats to America, reduce the sweeping human insecurity around the world, and manage long term threats to our collective, global security. This new approach takes into account the many (and ongoing) changes that have swept our planet since the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union.

The event, co-sponsored by 70 organizations, attracted 600 guests, including community members, students, and leaders.
