The Unfinished Game: Pascal, Fermat, and the Seventeenth-Century Letter that Made the World Modern
Before the mid-seventeenth century, scholars generally agreed that it was impossible to predict something by calculating mathematical outcomes. One simply could not put a numerical value on the likelihood that a particular event would occur. The issue remained intractable until Blaise Pascal wrote to Pierre de Fermat in 1654, outlining a solution to the "unfinished game" problem: how do you divide the pot when players are forced to end a game of dice before someone has won? The idea turned out to be far more seminal than Pascal realized. From it, the two men developed the method known today as probability theory. In The Unfinished Game, mathematician and NPR commentator Keith Devlin tells the story of this correspondence and its remarkable impact on the modern world.
Keith Devlin is a senior researcher at Stanford University's Center for the Study of Language and Information and its executive director, a consulting professor in the Department of Mathematics, and a co-founder of the Stanford Media X research network and of the university's H-STAR institute. He has written twenty-five books and over seventy-five published research articles. He is the "Math Guy" on National Public Radio. He lives in Palo Alto, California.
This event took place on October 2, 2008

I kept waiting and waiting for Bill O'Reilly to apologize for his incredibly insensitive statement on January 15, 2007, blaming a sex abuse victim for not escaping from his kidnapper, including the claim: "the situation here for this kid looks to me to be a lot more fun than what he had under his own parents" And, if you think I am quoting Bill O'Reilly out of context, you can see the entire context at: www.crooksandliars.com But, O'Reilly never did apologize and, worse, by the time Michael Devlin pled guilty to sexually abusing the boy O'Reilly blamed, O'Reilly was already pretending to care about the victim as you can see in this video. More info about Michael Devlin's October 9 guilty pleas in St. Louis County Circuit Court is available at: www.stltoday.com

EDIT: PLEASE NOTE that the word "It" in the title of this video refers to "Alleged Captivity"

Bill O'Reilly's incredibly dumb statement on Fox News on January 15, 2007 is the subject of this video.

The ABC video showing the outrage of the victim's mother is available at: abcnews.go.com

The allegation of unwanted sexual advances against Bill O'Reilly that I quoted is available at: www.thesmokinggun.com

I also took a short clip from the Colbert Report that is part of a longer segment available on the Comedy Central website at: www.comedycentral.com

Finally, I also believe this video qualifies for my FOX NEWS BIAS playlist at: www.youtube.com
