Complete video at: fora.tv

Journalist Scott Kirsner draws on film history to ponder the potential of online video, and criticizes the motion picture industry for being slow to adapt to the new medium. Kirsner urges Hollywood studios to regard the internet as less of a tool for digital piracy and more of "an opportunity to make money."

-----

Journalist Scott Kirsner presents an illustrated spin through his new book, Inventing the Movies, which offers a technological history of Hollywood -- and an exploration of why revolutionary new ideas so often face intense resistance in any industry.

In Hollywood, even after the debut of "The Jazz Singer," studio chiefs still dragged their heels on adopting sound technology. Technicolor was founded in 1915, and helped bring "a rainbow of colors" to the silver screen in movies like "The Wizard of Oz" and "Gone With the Wind" -- but it wasn't until the 1950s, when TVs started showing up in American living rooms, that Hollywood rushed to convert to color production. In the 1980s, Universal Pictures and Disney sued Sony over the Betamax; within a decade, they were making more money from home video than ticket sales.

And even today, most studios don't offer their full catalogs in digital form (hoping to make more money by selling us high-def DVDs) and Hollywood's top cinematographers prefer to shoot on film. Scott's very interactive talk is geared to both movie buffs and techies -- and will be followed by a discussion about why people resist new ideas, and how innovators can overcome that resistance - The Hillside Club

Scott Kirsner is a contributing columnist for the Boston Globe Business section. His column Innovation Economy, appears in the Globe every Sunday. Kirsner’s writing has also appeared in BusinessWeek, Variety, The New York Times, and other publications.Kirsner is the author of the book The Future of Web Video, editor of The Convergence Guide: Life Sciences in New England, and a contributor to The Good City: Writers Explore 21st Century Boston. Kirsner was part of the founding team of Boston.com in 1995, and he is a graduate of Boston University’s College of Communication.

As part of the Google D.C. Talks series, and in partnership with Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet & Society, Professor John Palfrey offers a sociological portrait of "digital natives" -- children who were born into and raised in the digital world -- with a particular focus on their conceptions of online privacy.

Palfrey is joined by Harvard students Sarah Zhang and Diana Kimball, two "digital natives" who offer their own observations from living their lives in a Twitter-, YouTube-, and blog-filled world.

This event took place on October 15, 2008 at Google's office in Washington, D.C.

John Palfrey visits Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss his book "Born Digital: Connecting with a Global Generation of Digital Native." This event took place on September 15, 2008, as part of the Authors@Google series.

The most enduring change wrought by the digital revolution is neither the new business models nor the new search algorithms, but rather the massive generation gap between those who were born digital and those who were not. Based on original research, Born Digital explores a broad range of issues, from the highly philosophical to the purely practical: What does identity mean for young people who have dozens of online profiles and avatars? Should we worry about privacy issues or is privacy even a relevant concern for digital natives? How does the concept of safety translate into an increasingly virtual world? Is stranger-danger a real problem, or a red herring? What lies ahead socially, professionally, and psychologically for this generation?

John Palfrey is Clinical Professor of Law and Executive Director of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School. He is a regular commentator on network news programs, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, Fox News, NPR and BBC. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Wherever you go, whatever you say, write, photograph, or buy, you are generating information. That information can be captured, digitized, retrieved, and copied--anywhere on Earth, instantly. Sophisticated computers can increasingly uncover meaning in those digital tracesunderstanding, anticipating, and influencing you as never before. Is this utopia? Or the dawning of a 1984/Brave New World horror world? Whatever you call it, it's happening. What kind of world are we creating? What will it be like to live there?
Blown to Bits offers powerful and controversial answers to these questions and gives you the knowledge you need to help shape your own digital future, not let others do it for you. Building on their pioneering joint MIT/Harvard course, the authors reveal how the digital revolution is changing everything, in ways that are stunning even the most informed experts.

Hal Abelson is Class of 1922 Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT, and an IEEE Fellow. He has helped drive innovative educational technology initiatives such MIT OpenCourseWare, cofounded Creative Commons and Public Knowledge, and was founding director of the Free Software Foundation. Harry Lewis, former Dean of Harvard College, is Gordon McKay Professor of Computer Science at Harvard. He is author of Excellence Without a Soul: Does Liberal Education Have a Future.
YouTube co-founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen discuss copyright issues regarding web video, in a conversation with Wired Magazine Editor-In-Chief Chris Anderson.

-----

Chad Hurley and Steven Chen in conversation with Chris Anderson.

With YouTube, Hurley and Chen created a new way for millions of people to entertain, educate, rock and shock one another on a scale we've never seen before. YouTube is a platform for everyday people to broadcast their perspectives to the masses.

Musicians, amateur filmmakers, comedians, and professional content owners alike are sharing their videos, and some even rise to the top to become stars. INFORUM awards the founders of YouTube for their ingenuity and talks with them about everything from their homegrown culture to Google to Viacom to what's next on the horizon. -- The Commonwealth Club
