How can we combat terrorism, fight poverty, and promote democracy in the developing world? How is this different from the Bush administration's plans, and why will it work? And where is this approach most needed? Reuben Brigety of the Center for American Progress answers these questions in the latest installment of CAP's ASK THE EXPERT series.

People in China send their first wishes to the new U.S. President-elect Barak Obama.

Many Chinese see Obama as a youthful president-elect with the energy to tackle the financial crisis now threatening their economy. He's also seen carrying an ethnic heritage that could help America reach out to the rest of the world.

1. (English) QIU XIAOHUI, STUDENT, SAYING:
"Obama, I'm really happy you won. And I hope you can help American people set up more understanding to Chinese. And maybe also help all the people from the world to know what happens in China. It's very important for me"

2. (Mandarin) HAN LONG, BUSINESSMAN, SAYING:
"Hello Mr. Obama. Two months ago I already knew you would become president of the United States. I have placed so much hope on you. I won't go on and on about how much attention I have paid to you, but I hope when you take over you can sort out the American economy and bring the world economy back up, especially the Chinese economy. I've bought so many stocks and funds, and lately they're just falling, falling, falling. I hope you will exert your influence over the world, Asia and China, so all of us can benefit greatly. This is my hope"

3. (English) ZHANG WEIHUI, OFFICE WORKER, SAYING:
" I think you are a young president, and you will do a lot of things after you've taking the White House. And I wish, and I think that your colour skin gives you some advantages that will bring hope to a lot of people around the world who are not white skinned. And I hope you will bring help to the world economy and also to the world financial situation.'

4. (English) LI QIAN, STUDENT, SAYING:
"I hope you can bring new changes into the United States, especially in the special situation, for example in the international financial crisis. I'm very impressed by your slogan in the election, that is "The Change We Need." So I hope your slogan can come true in the next four or eight years in your administration.'

FRED THOMPSON: In current terms [national security] means being able to accept victory, being able to turn our back on an attitude of defeat. Weve got so many people in Washington today that are vested in the notion of defeat in Iraq that they cant take yes for an answer. They cant accept good news and were getting good news because of the sacrifices the best fighting force in the history of the world now we look at an opportunity in the not-too-distant future to start bringin our troops home as a part of a part of a success scenario, not a defeat scenario and thats what the United States is all about because, if we do it otherwise, its gonna make for a more dangerous homeland. Its gonna send the wrong signal that were weak and were divided and were facing an enemy that wants to bring down western civilization and were number one on their hit list. We gotta be strong and be united and do whats necessary, as weve always done, to defend this country.

[] Send out the message to our friends and our enemies alike: the United States of America is prepared to do whatever it is needed to do, under the circumstances, to defend itself strongly, unapologetically. We live in a country thats shed more blood for the freedom of other people than all the other countries put together. We dont have a whole to be apologetic about, as far as Im concerned. Thats the kind of country that we grew up in and the kind of country we want to leave to our children and to our grandchildren.

Former U.S. National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski argues that only a President "not of the party in power" can positively change America's image abroad.

-----

What is the most effective way to influence the exercise of political power? Can genocide be halted? What are the natural limits of political power?

Join three preeminent policy and opinion makers as they discuss the violation and defense of human rights by national and international powers.

Featuring Zbigniew Brzezinski, former national security advisor; Nicholas D. Kristof, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for The New York Times; and Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Thomas Weiss, Presidential Professor of Political Science at The Graduate Center moderates - City University New York

Zbigniew Kazimierz Brzezinski is a Polish-American political scientist, geostrategist, and statesman who served as United States National Security Advisor to President Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1981. Major foreign policy events during his term of office included the normalization of relations with the People's Republic of China (and the severing of ties with the Republic of China — today's Taiwan), the signing of the second Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT II), the brokering of the Camp David Accords, the transition of Iran to an anti-Western Islamic state, encouraging reform in Eastern Europe, emphasizing human rights in U.S. foreign policy, the arming of the mujaheddin in Afghanistan to fight against the Soviet-friendly Afghan government and later to counter the Soviet invasion, and the signing of the Torrijos-Carter Treaties relinquishing U.S. control of the Panama Canal after 1999.

He is currently a professor of American foreign policy at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies, a scholar at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and a member of various boards and councils. He appears frequently as an expert on the PBS program The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.

First films from eldersforobama.com, an exciting new web-based effort from Tilson Films (http://tilsonfilms.com). The idea is to help overcome the fears and doubts of many older white voters by cutting through the mainstream media and commercial clutter and letting senior Obama supporters speak directly to their peers. No fancy production values or slick graphics, just seniors sitting in their kitchens and living rooms, sharing heartfelt insights about what's at stake in this election. Please check out the other "Elders On..." films, and keep visiting the website for new films and special guests.
