Complete video at: fora.tv

AIDS activist Mechai "Mr. Condom" Viravaidya discusses several "out-of-the-box" methods for promoting condom distribution and safe-sex practices in his native Thailand.

-----

Mechai Viravaidya, politician and founder of the Population and Community Development Association in Thailand, discusses his innovative techniques for promoting birth control in the face of overpopulation and the AIDS epidemic.

He also talks about his efforts to build economies in rural villages in order to promote health and education. - Chautauqua Institution

Mechai Viravaidya, popularly known as "Mr. Condom" in his native Thailand, was recently awarded the 2007 Gates Award for Global Health on behalf of The Population and Community Development Association (PDA), the organization he founded in 1974. For over 30 years, PDA has helped improve lives and strengthen communities in Thailand through HIV prevention and family planning programs that have become international models. A health economist by training, Viravaidya is best known for his use of humor and unorthodox methods in focusing the public's attention on public health. The programs developed by Viravaidya and PDA led to a dramatic reduction in new HIV infections in Thailand, from 143,000 in 1991 to 21,000 in 2003.

Using a nationwide network of village-based volunteers, PDA empowers women to plan their pregnancies, giving both mothers and children the opportunity to live healthier lives. PDA's comprehensive approach to poverty reduction also addresses income generation, water resource development, sanitation projects, environmental conservation, and promotion of gender equality and democracy.

Today, PDA's 600 employees and more than 12,000 volunteers work in 18 regional development centers and branch offices throughout Thailand. Through its international training program, PDA has trained 2,900 people from 50 countries in innovative approaches to HIV prevention, family planning, adolescent reproductive health and other issues.

The discussion was moderated by Ezra Klein, Associate Editor at The American Prospect.

Health care is one of the most important issues concerning Americans this election season. More than 45 million Americans do not have health insurance—a reality that has dire consequences for both individuals and the economy.

Policymakers across the political spectrum agree that we need to make health care more affordable and more accessible to all Americans. But when it comes down to the issues—should reform come from the federal government, or states? how should we construct tax credits? what about high-risk pools?—differences emerge.

Geneticist J. Craig Venter denounces racially-based science and medical research, arguing that humans are too genetically similar for any major differentiation to have evolved among races.

-----

The man who mapped the human genome has a new focus: using microbes to create alternative fuels. Craig Venter, maverick biologist, wants to cure our addiction to oil. To do so, he proposes creating a designer microbe -- the heart of a biological engine -- from scratch, then adding genes culled from the sea to turn crops such as switch grass and cornstalks into ethanol.

This could prompt a major shift in the economics of the energy industry and in the process bring Venter to a secondary goal: showing the world he can be as successful as he was at sequencing human DNA.

Venter, a former Vietnam medic, brought about a paradigm shift in genomic sequencing that has entered him in the mythology of science.

He wanted to play God, so he cracked the human genome. Now he wants to play Darwin and collect the DNA of everything on the planet. Venter has graced the covers of Time and BusinessWeek - The Oxonian Society

J. Craig Venter, PH.D. is regarded as one of the leading scientists of the 21st century for his contributions to genomic research and is one of the country'’s most frequently cited scientists. He is Founder and President of the J. Craig Venter Institute and J. Craig Venter Science Foundation, not-for-profit research and support organizations dedicated to human genomic research, exploration of social and ethical issues in genomics, and alternative energy solutions through microbial sources. He is also the Founder and Chairman of the Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR).

Dr. Venter's autobiography A Life Decoded was published in October of 2007.

Up to 900,000 people die each year from smoking-related diseases in India.

It is feared that the yearly toll could rise to one million people by 2010.

Faced with these startling figures, the government is instituting toughter smoking bans.

But will it be enough? Al Jazeera's Matt McClure reports from Delhi.

Starting Monday, The Young Turks will be carrying the ad that Brave New PAC and Democracy for America have put together on John McCain's health records on our XM satellite radio show and on our website - www.theyoungturks.com.

MSNBC pulled this ad after getting pressure from Bill O'Reilly. How does that work? If I yell at Rush Limbaugh, will he drop his advertisers? We are told that this ad is "controversial" because it brings up the issue of John McCain's health (you can watch the ad for yourself here).

Why is that controversial? Whether the man we elect will make it through the four years of his term is highly relevant to our decision making process. Especially when the person he has selected as his VP is grossly incompetent.

I really don't see the issue. Are we worried that we are being impolite to John McCain? Is it bad form to bring up the word cancer? Does it have to be whispered? Can it not be said in polite company or on-air?

If John McCain were a plumber and he was going to come into fix my sink, his health is none of my business (presuming that he gets the sink unclogged without having a health crisis). If John McCain had a health problem that is not life threatening, such as erectile dysfunction, then that is none of my business. It is not at all relevant. But if he has recurring cancer and there is some chance he cannot complete the job we are hiring him for - and that job is the most important job in the world - then his health is of tremendous relevance. It would defy logic to claim that it is not.

http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2008/06/sustainable_security2.html

The increasing involvement of the U.S. armed forces in addressing the basic human needs of civilians abroad represents one of the most profound changes in U.S. strategic thought and practice in at least a generation. The Pentagon is recognizing that conventional "kinetic" military operations, which utilize armed force through direct action to kill or capture the enemy, have limited utility in countering the threats posed by militant extremism. Therefore, they are searching for—and finding—"non-kinetic" options other than the use of force to tackle the non-violent components of pressing security problems, both in and out of warzones.

This may seem like an appropriate approach to America's new security challenges in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, but it is not without controversy. The increasing involvement of the U.S. military in civilian assistance activities has launched a contentious debate about the role of the military in global development, and the relevance of global development to American national security. Non-governmental organizations argue that the "militarization" of development assistance threatens to undermine the moral imperatives of poverty reduction, the neutral provision of emergency relief, and the security of civilian aid workers in the field.

Non-military government agencies, most prominently the U.S. State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development, have demonstrated a complex ambivalence about the subject. Even as their bureaucracies have changed to accommodate the military's growing role in providing assistance, some rank-and-file staff at USAID have argued that the military's programs do not constitute "real development" work, while a vocal minority of foreign service officers in the State Department have protested their deployment to promote political reconciliation in active warzones as hazardous assignments inappropriate for professional ...

Goodman Green produced this 10 minute
video for us six months ago.

If you go to the 6:44 point in the video
you'll get the straight facts on Gardacil.
the latest scam from the pharmaceutical
industry.

Predictably, adverse reactions to this
dubious vaccine which the government
would like to make mandatory for
girls aged 10 to 15 are being reported in
the thousands.

TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: "Anyway, let me just say, so, uh, th-, the p-, uh, then we have to address these issues one by one and, uh, s-, I'll say, there's many. Community health centers obviously are important for low-income people. Walk-in clinics. The most expensive form of health care in America, as we all know, is emergency room care. If Wal-Mart or one of these people wants to set up a clinic where they have a doctor or pharmacist and you've got a routine health need and go in there and get quick treatment and the pharmaceutical drug that you need, fine. Let's do it. We need to have outcome-based treatment of the chronic diseases."

TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: ". . . my question is really about objectivity and every time I see a debate on health care I really wonder whether or not the statistics and the data that people are discussing are accurate, reliable . . . so are you satisfied with the information that you're getting in terms of it's ability to allow competent decision making?"

JOHN MCCAIN: "I think on the major statistics I am. And here's the most disturbing fact of all and I don't think it's disputed: 47 million Americans are without health insurance today. Half of them will probably, is because they're out of a job and they will gain employment and then they will then be able to obtain health insurance. And that's nice to know. But the other half, which I, 8 million are children, then they, and many of those children of course is just because we haven't been around to sign them up. But then you get down into what you and I all know, is with the big looming fiscal problem and challenge and that is those with people with chronic diseases and, or, and/or preexisting conditions. And that is the area where we really have to address because the insurers won't insure them, they either making too much money to qualify for Medicaid or other reasons, like I said there are some children that simply aren't in the SCHIP program just because they haven't signed up for it . . . And so my answer to you is I think that a lot of the, some of the statistics may be not accurate but the issue of the uninsured and those with preexisting conditions or chronic diseases, is, is really a, particularly the preexisting conditions, is one that's the major challenge in health care in America today."

TRANSCRIPT:
MICHELLE BENTLEY: Hi, my name is Michelle Bentley . . . our current medial system seems to be more reactive than proactive . . . how does your plan address this issue?

JOHN MCCAIN: . . . there are many things that I did not cover in my opening comments . . . one of the most alarming statistics is the rise amongst young people of obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes. No health care system in the world can sustain an increase in that amongst young people. We have to emphasis wellness and fitness, ranging from insurance policies that reward people . . . and by the way we can certainly put their medical records online, if they wish to they can show those medical records to their insurer. We also, obviously need to encourage simple things like membership in a health club, cash rewards back to the employees for employees that have practiced the wellness and fitness habits . . . I also want to mention one other thing that sounds a little, maybe, naïve but I think it's effective. At Miami Children's Hospital I met a young man who had lost 76 pounds by dieting and exercise. And the motivation for that young man to do that was a thing called Shaq's challenge. Shaquille O'Neal had engaged in a program where Shaq challenged young people to get back into shape . . . I'd like to ask every athlete in America that is famous and doing well to go around to our schools all over America . . . I think every parent should know the school lunch program at their school, I think every parent should know the physical education program that is at each of these schools and we've got to make young people understand that wellness and fitness is directly related to their future and their longevity in this great nation. So I think we need to put in a lot of incentives from insurance point of view . . . but I would also like to see us do a better job of motivating young Americans
