Russian scholar Nikolay Petrov discusses the relationship between Russia's next president, Dimitry Medvedev, and its current, outgoing one, Vadimir Putin. This program was recorded prior to Russia's March 2 Presidential election.

-----

Carnegie Moscow Center Scholar-in-Residence Nikolai Petrov discussed Russia's March 2 presidential elections, which are widely expected to usher in the rule of Dmitry Medvedev, President Putin's favored successor.

Petrov provided analysis of the Putin regime's political structure, the likely policy trajectory of a Medvedev administration, and the problems that Russia's new president will have to tackle. He concluded that Russian politics will change substantially even in the next six months as key Kremlin factions etch out their role in the next administration.

Carnegie's James F. Collins moderated the event - Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

Nikolay Petrov served as chief organizer of the Analysis and Forecast Division in the Supreme Soviet (1991-1992), advisor and analyst for the Russian Presidential Administration (1994-1995), and a scholar at the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies (1993-1994) and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (1994). From 1996 to 2000, Petrov worked at the Carnegie Moscow Center as a senior consultant and scholar-in-residence.

He later lectured at Macalester College in the United States. Petrov earned his Ph.D. from Moscow State University. Petrov is also a senior research associate with the Institute of Geography at the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The results are in, and Vladimir Putin's hand-picked successor, Dmitry Medvedev, has won the Russian presidential elections in a landslide.

Medvedev has promised to carry on Putin's legacy. He says he wants Putin to be his prime minister, but just how much power the president will retain once he leaves office is unclear.

Other candidates in the race are protesting the results, claiming they were not allowed equal media coverage before the vote.

Election monitors are also saying the vote was not fair.

Has the election and results been a blow to Russian democracy? And how will Medvedev tackle the big issues facing the country?

Inside Story, with presenter Sami Zeidan, looks at the man who will be president and his vision for Russia.

Dmitry Medvedev was officially elected as the President of Russia in elections over the weekend. Medvedev, who was backed by Vladimir Putin to succeed him as president, won about 70 per cent of Sunday's vote according to official results. I spoke with three long time observers of Russia last Friday - former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Editor of the New Yorker David Remnick and Former US ambassador to Russia Thomas Pickering. - about who is Medvedev, what his election means for Russia and the opportunities for the next American president.
