Geneticist J. Craig Venter denounces racially-based science and medical research, arguing that humans are too genetically similar for any major differentiation to have evolved among races.

-----

The man who mapped the human genome has a new focus: using microbes to create alternative fuels. Craig Venter, maverick biologist, wants to cure our addiction to oil. To do so, he proposes creating a designer microbe -- the heart of a biological engine -- from scratch, then adding genes culled from the sea to turn crops such as switch grass and cornstalks into ethanol.

This could prompt a major shift in the economics of the energy industry and in the process bring Venter to a secondary goal: showing the world he can be as successful as he was at sequencing human DNA.

Venter, a former Vietnam medic, brought about a paradigm shift in genomic sequencing that has entered him in the mythology of science.

He wanted to play God, so he cracked the human genome. Now he wants to play Darwin and collect the DNA of everything on the planet. Venter has graced the covers of Time and BusinessWeek - The Oxonian Society

J. Craig Venter, PH.D. is regarded as one of the leading scientists of the 21st century for his contributions to genomic research and is one of the country'’s most frequently cited scientists. He is Founder and President of the J. Craig Venter Institute and J. Craig Venter Science Foundation, not-for-profit research and support organizations dedicated to human genomic research, exploration of social and ethical issues in genomics, and alternative energy solutions through microbial sources. He is also the Founder and Chairman of the Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR).

Dr. Venter's autobiography A Life Decoded was published in October of 2007.

Canadian DNA art plus pinhole cameras in Colombia.

Scientists studying DNA in the Canadian city of Montreal have recently been dealing with requests from a most unusual client.

Two friends based in the country's capital Ottawa - one a trained scientist, the other a marketing specialist - came up with a fun idea that would surprisingly transform both of their lives.

Descibed as "Andy Warhol meets CSI" the two men send requests off to the DNA lab and then your unique configuration is turned into a work of art.

An idea that was initially met with scepticism and a trickle of requests has now become a viable business and a flood of customers.

Shooting for peace

Pinhole cameras which do not need a lens but just a small opening in a box or tin that manipulates light are a popular science project in many Colombian schools because they are cheap and easy to make.

Now a new initiative Shooting Cameras for Peace is using pinhole cameras to capture the stories of some of the thousands of young people in the Colombian capital Bogota who are forced to live in extreme poverty.

Many had to flee the armed conflict in the countryside, their education and their childhood interrupted.

Since the photography project started hundreds of kids have shared their images with their communities and with the world.

Molecular biologist Elizabeth Blackburn--one of Time magazine's 100 "Most Influential People in the World" in 2007--made headlines in 2004 when she was dismissed from the President's Council on Bioethics after objecting to the council's call for a moratorium on stem cell research and protesting the suppression of relevant scientific evidence in its final report. But it is Blackburn's groundbreaking work on telomeric DNA, which launched the field of telomere research, that will have the more profound and long-lasting effect on science and society.

In June, we hosted Catherine Brady who told the story of Elizabeth Blackburn's life and work and the emergence of a new field of scientific research on the specialized ends of chromosomes and the telomerase enzyme that extends them. On Monday, August 18th we welcome Elizabeth Blackburn herself to our Google San Francisco office.
This event took place on August 18, 2008, as a part of the Women@Google series.

TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: "I need to talk to you about spending. I need to talk to you and give you some straight talk because we've got some economic difficulties today and no one in this room knows that better than the people in this room and the American people. These are tough times. And one of the reasons we're in tough times is because we Republicans let spending get completely out of control. We betrayed the trust of our conservative base when we went on a spending spree of incredible proportions. When we came to power in '94 to change government, government changed us. We presided over the greatest increase in the size of government since the great society and our children are going to pay a price for it . . . "

Celebrity geneticist Craig Venter examines possible long-term implications of antibiotics and antiseptics.

-----

Joining 3.5 Billion Years of Microbial Invention featuring biologist J. Craig Venter.

Biologist, author and businessman Craig Venter discusses his work mapping and synthesizing genomes. Venter recalls his work mapping the human genome and expands on his current work which includes categorizing new genes and species of microbes from ocean water. Venter also explains how microbial research can be used for metabolic engineering and alternative energy sources.

J. Craig Venter, PH.D. is regarded as one of the leading scientists of the 21st century for his contributions to genomic research and is one of the country’s most frequently cited scientists.

Dr. Venter began his formal education after serving as a Navy Corpsman in Danang, Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. After earning a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and a Ph.D. in physiology and pharmacology, both from the University of California at San Diego and both in three years, he was appointed professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo and the Roswell Park Cancer Institute. In 1984, he moved to the National Institutes of Health, where he developed expressed-sequence tags (ESTs), a revolutionary strategy for gene discovery. In 1992, he founded TIGR, where he and his team decoded the genome of the first free-living organism, the bacterium Haemophilus influenzae, using an original whole-genome shotgun technique. Since then, TIGR has sequenced more than 50 genomes using Dr. Venter's techniques.

Dr. Venter is the author of more than 200 articles and the recipient of numerous honorary degrees, public honors, and scientific awards, including the Financial Times Man of the Year Award, TIME Magazine Man of the Year (runner up), 2002 Gairdner Foundation International Award, and the 2001 Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize. Dr. Venter is a member of numerous prestigious scientific organizations including, including the National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and American Society for Microbiology. He was also one of the first 38 people to be selected by Desmond Tutu as part of the "Hands That Shape Humanity" world exhibition.

Dr. Venter's autobiography A Life Decoded was published in October of 2007.

Venter also explains how microbial research can be used for metabolic engineering and alternative energy sources.

J. Craig Venter, PH.D. is regarded as one of the leading scientists of the 21st century for his contributions to genomic research and is one of the country’s most frequently cited scientists.

Author Fred Kaufman discusses the social, cultural and economic impacts of America's ever-increasing shift towards genetically modified foods.

-----

A Short History of the American Stomach with Fred Kaufman.

Kaufman takes us on a raucous, witty and fact-filled exploration of America's complex and often bizarre relationship with food. From secret raw-milk covens in New York City to "gastroporn" addicts, Kaufman presents an irreverent take on all aspects of the foodie world.

A renowned chronicler of all things gastronomic, Kaufamn's infamous Harper's article, "Debbie Does Salad," which likened the Food Network's camera shots to pornography (he sat down and watched six hours of the network's programming with a porn industry veteran to get her thoughts), generated incredible buzz in the foodie world.

In his most recent article for The New York Times Sunday Magazine, Kaufman turned his subversive gaze on the world of pet food - and hit the "most e-mailed" list.

In his latest work, Kaufman uncovers Puritan anorexia and bulimia and sheds a completely new light on this issue, as does his subversive take on cookbooks and diet books, his explorations into genetically modified food, and the digestive underpinnings of American imperialism - The Commonwealth Club of California

Frederick Kaufman has written about American food culture and other subjects for Harper's Magazine, the New Yorker, Gourmet, Gastronomica, and the New York Times Magazine, among others. He's been a freelancer for years, and published over one-hundred magazine articles, along with three books (Author, A Short History of the American Stomach). He's a contributing editor at Harper's, and teaches at the City University of New York and CUNY's Graduate School of Journalism.
