Former U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona argues for greater forcus on humanitarian aid as a staple of American foreign policy.

-----

Prevention: The Key to Heading off a National Health-Care Crisis with former Surgeon General Richard Carmona, M.D.

Carmona describes the current health crisis as preventable and reversible. He notes that chronic disease accounts for 7 in 10 deaths and 75 cents of every dollar spent on health care in the United States.

As 17th U.S. surgeon general, Carmona worked to revise our nation's approach to health by emphasizing the importance of increasing prevention, eliminating health disparities and improving health literacy.

Carmona's rise to being "doctor of the nation" is particularly remarkable because of his disadvantaged childhood. He was homeless at age 6 and a high-school dropout at 17. Join us to hear Carmona's insights about our health-care challenges and opportunities - The Commonwealth Club of California

Dr. Richard H. Carmona was born to a poor family in New York City. Dr. Carmona experienced homelessness, hunger and health disparities during his youth. The experiences greatly sensitized him to the relationships among culture, health, education and economic status and shaped his future.

After dropping out of high school, Dr. Carmona enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1967. While serving, he earned his General Equivalency Diploma and went on to become a combat-decorated Special Forces Vietnam veteran. After leaving active duty, he was able to attend Bronx Community College of the City University of New York through an open enrollment program for veterans. He earned an associate of arts degree and then attended the University of California, San Francisco, where he received a bachelor of science degree (1977) and medical degree (1979). At the University of California Medical School, Dr. Carmona was awarded the prestigious gold-headed cane as the top graduate.

Originally trained in general and vascular surgery after medical school, Dr. Carmona completed a
National Institutes of Health-sponsored fellowship in trauma, burns and critical care. He is a Fellow
of the American College of Surgeons. Recruited jointly by the Tucson (Arizona) Medical Center and
the University of Arizona, Dr. Carmona started and directed Arizona's first regional trauma care
system, and became the chairman of the State of Arizona Southern Regional Emergency Medical
System, a professor of surgery, public health and family and community medicine at the University
of Arizona, and the Pima County Sheriff's Department surgeon and deputy sheriff.

MIT Behavioral Economist Dan Ariely discusses the medical effectiveness of placebos, and outlines how expectations of a given situation will affect our experiences of that situation.

-----

Why do our headaches persist after taking a one-cent aspirin but disappear when we take a 50-cent aspirin? Why do we splurge on a lavish meal but cut coupons to save twenty-five cents on a can of soup? We think we're making smart, rational choices. But are we?

In a series of illuminating, often surprising experiments, MIT behavioral economist Dan Ariely refutes the common assumption that we behave in fundamentally rational ways. Blending everyday experience with groundbreaking research, Ariely explains how expectations, emotions, social norms, and other invisible, seemingly illogical forces skew our reasoning abilities. Predictably Irrational will change the way we interact with the world - one small decision at a time - Cody's Books

Dan Ariely is the Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Behavioral Economics at MIT, where he holds a joint appointment between MIT's Media Laboratory and the Sloan School of Management. His work has been featured in The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, the Boston Globe, Scientific American, and Science.

India is facing a growing gender imbalance -blamed on the widespread abortion of female foetuses. In some states, fewer than eight hundred girls are born for every thousand boys. Girls are seen as a financial burden, largely because of the dowries that have to be paid when they get married. Now the Indian government will start paying parents to help them bring up female babies. Al Jazeera's Matt McClure reports.

David Rieff, son of the late author Susan Sontag, gives his thoughts on modern medicine and mortality.

-----

David Rieff talks about Swimming in a Sea of Death, a memoir and an investigation, and loving tribute to his mother, the writer Susan Sontag, and her final battle with cancer. Rieff's brave, passionate, and unsparing witness of the last nine months of Sontag's life, from her initial diagnosis to her death, is both an intensely personal portrait of the relationship between a mother and a son, and a reflection on what it is like to try to help someone gravely ill in her fight to go on living and, when the time comes, to die with dignity.

Rieff confronts the blunt feelings of the survivor - the guilt, the self-questioning, the sense of not having done enough. And he tries to understand what it means to desire so desperately, as his mother did to the end of her life, to try almost anything in order to go on living.

David Rieff is a contributing writer to The New York Times Magazine. He is the author of seven previous books, including the acclaimed At the Point of a Gun: Democratic Dreams and Armed Intervention; A Bed for the Night: Humanitarianism in Crisis; and Slaughterhouse: Bosnia and the Failure of the West. He lives in New York City - Cody's Books

Dr. Pius Kamau reads his essay "A Duty to Heal." This excerpt is taken from a program on the book "This I Believe," featuring Dan Gediman.

-----

Dan Gediman, the executive producer of NPR's This I Believe, joins local contributing essayists to read from This I Believe.

Featuring many renowned contributors - including Isabel Allende, Colin Powell, Gloria Steinem, William F. Buckley, Jr., Penn Jillette, Bill Gates, and John Updike - this collection also contains essays by a Brooklyn lawyer; a part-time hospital clerk; and a man who serves on Rhode Island's parole board. The result is a stirring and provocative trip inside the minds and hearts of a diverse group of people whose beliefs - and the incredibly varied ways in which they choose to express them - reveal the American spirit at its best - Tattered Cover

Before coming to the U.S. in 1971, Dr. Pius Kamau studied medicine in Spain, England and his native Kenya. A thoracic and general surgeon, Kamau also writes a column for the Denver Post. He is currently organizing a medical group to work in Sudan.

Experts say that as many as half of the estimated 655,000 civilian deaths in the war so far might have been avoided if proper medical care had been provided but billions of dollars intended for the reconstruction of the country's medical and hospital network have gone missing while 18,000 doctors have left the country and the remaining ones have been the targets of kidnappings and murder.

Inside Iraq looks at the crisis facing Iraq's healthcare system.

Nobel Prize-winning geneticist Andrew Fire answers several questions relating to ethics, politics, and science research.

-----

Andrew Fire discusses "The Genetic Landscape: What is RNA Interference?"

Fire knows more than most people about the mysteries of genetics. Come learn about genetics and RNA interference from the winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in medicine, for advances in gene silencing - a process that allows cells to selectively turn off specific genes. Research in this area jump-started a new biological field by opening the door to previously inaccessible lodes of genetic information - The Commonwealth Club

Andrew Zachary Fire is an American professor of pathology and genetics at Stanford University.

Fire is one of the laureates of the 2006 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, along with Craig C. Mello, for the discovery of RNA interference (RNAi). This research was conducted at the Carnegie Institution of Washington and published in 1998. Fire is currently professor of pathology and of genetics at the Stanford University School of Medicine, which he joined in 2003.

Philosopher Michael Sandel and medical researcher William Haseltine debate ethical issues in genetic engineering, in a conversation with the Aspen Institute's Elliot Gerson.

-----

"The Case Against Perfection: Ethics in the Age of Genetic Engineering" with Michael Sandel and William Haseltine speaking at the 2007 Aspen Ideas Festival. Elliot Gerson moderates the discussion.

Some of the most inspired and provocative thinkers, writers, artists, business people, teachers and other leaders drawn from myriad fields and from across the country and around the world all gathered in a single place - to teach, speak, lead, question, and answer at the 2006 Aspen Ideas Festival. Throughout the week, they all interacted with an audience of thoughtful people who stepped back from their day-to-day routines to delve deeply into a world of ideas, thought, and discussion.

Michael J. Sandel is the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of Government at Harvard University, where he has taught political philosophy since 1980. He is the author of many books, including "The Case against Perfection: Ethics in the Age of Genetic Engineering" (Harvard University Press, 2007). His writings also appear in general publications such as The Atlantic Monthly, The New Republic, and The New York Times.

William A. Haseltine is chairman of Haseltine Global Health, LLC, a virtual pharmaceutical company dedicated to developing new and more efficient means to develop new life saving drugs and medical devices. He is also president of the Haseltine Foundation for Medical Sciences and the Arts, a foundation that supports access to high quality health for the poor and middle class of developing countries and that also fosters a dialog between sciences and the arts.

Elliot Gerson is executive vice president for Seminars and Public Programs at the Aspen Institute. Gerson is responsible for the Aspen Institute’s seminars, including the Executive Seminar, topical and custom seminars, and those offered in Socrates programs. He also manages the Institute’s public programs, including the Aspen Ideas Festival and the World Biomedical Forum. As American secretary of the Rhodes Trust, he manages the US Rhodes Scholarships.
