The case surrounding Alabama Governor Don Siegelman is the centerpiece, and is still reckoned by most observers as the most overpowering case for prosecutorial abuse so far. On Tuesday, <strong>more evidence linking Karl Rove to the Siegelman prosecution will be put forward. </strong></p></blockquote><p>And guess who&#39;s testifying? None other than <strong>Dick Thornburgh, the Attorney General of President George H.W. Bush.</strong> He&#39;ll be testifying that he has examined one of the cases and that he concludes that it was <strong>&quot;motivated and driven by improper political factors&quot;.</strong> </p><blockquote><p>Defense attorney Jerry McDevitt called Mr. <strong>Thornburgh&rsquo;s testimony &ldquo;highly unusual,&rdquo; especially for a Republican and a former head of the Department of Justice.</strong> </p><p>The neutrality of the justice department is presumed, Mr. McDevitt said. <strong>For Mr. Thornburgh to speak out against that, he said, &ldquo;speaks volumes.&rdquo;</strong></p></blockquote><p>What is it going to take to finally hang these guys? So now they&#39;re trying to compel testimony from them.</p><p>That means that if Mukasey is confirmed, one of the first things he&#39;d have to do is try to get them to testify.</p><blockquote><p>&quot;<strong>It sure would have changed the subject if there was a guilty plea</strong>,&quot; said one senior government official. &quot;<strong>The story line changes goes from an Attorney General under fire who is alleged to have lied to Congress to &#39;our national security and ability of the government to protect us against Al Qaeda </strong>was seriously compromised by people acting criminally.&#39;&quot; </p></blockquote><p>Memo from White House: When in doubt, repeat the words 9/11 and/or Al Qaeda as often as possible to make your point.&nbsp;</p><p>Memo from us: We don&#39;t buy it any more. </p><p>Bill Keller, editor of the New York Times:</p><blockquote><p><strong>&quot;I&#39;m not sure journalists fully appreciate the threat confronting us,&quot;</strong> Keller wrote. &quot;The Times in the eavesdropping case, the Post for its CIA prison stories, and everyone else who has tried to look behind the war on terror.&quot;</p></blockquote><p>Memo to Keller: Where were you when Miller pushed for the Iraq war?&nbsp;</p><blockquote><p>Keller asserted that <strong>&quot;there&#39;s sometimes a vindictive tone in the way [administration officials] talk about dragging reporters before grand juries </strong>and in the hints that <strong>reporters who look too hard into the public&#39;s business risk being branded traitors.&quot; </strong></p></blockquote><p><em>Sometimes?</em> <em>Sometimes</em> a vindictive tone?</p><blockquote><p>He warned that journalists are possibly &quot;suffering a bit of subpoena fatigue. <strong>Maybe some people are a little intimidated by the way the White House plays the soft-on-terror card.&quot;</strong></p></blockquote><p>Certainly not Congress.
