It's gonna help you.</p> <p>We know what it's gonna take, John and I do. We know that it's gonna take American energy resources brought to you by American ingenuity and produced by American workers and that's we're going to expand our use of alternative fuels also and we're gonna drill now to make this nation energy independent. In her first months as Director-General, Dame Stella was subject to a determined campaign by the British press to identify her. As the first female head of the secret service, she was also the first to be officially named and photographed during her tenure in charge of Britain's spy service.</p> <p>In December 1991, she made a visit to Moscow to make the first friendly contact between the British intelligence services and their old enemies, now allies, the KGB. On her return from Russia, she was informed that she was promoted to Director-General.</p> <p>Dame Stella said, "I was fortunate to be in a central position during a time of great change in the security scene and I believe I have a contribution to make to our understanding of the period."</p> <p>The two most recent James Bond films have seen the fictitious supercool spy's boss portrayed by a female "M" (which is a depiction of Dame Stella), with Dame Judi Dench filling that role.</p> <p>Dame Stella said she found her portrayal as "startling", and added that it was "really very good. After a 20-month politically divisive battle, Secretary Albright swore in Ambassador Hormel. Two years later, in 2001, President Bush nominated Michael Guest to be ambassador to Romania. While there was no battle for confirmation, what both ambassadors had to cope with was an inequitable system that treated them and their committed partners differently under the law.</p> <p>Federal Employees, whether in the foreign service or working in a regional office of HHS, are denied the ability to purchase domestic partner benefits. The Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act (S. 2521 and H.R. 4838) would provide domestic partnership benefits to all federal civilian employees on the same basis as spousal benefits. These benefits, available for same sex domestic partners of federal employees, would include participation in applicable retirement programs, compensation for work injuries, and life and health insurance benefits.</p> <p>By offering health benefits to the domestic partners of federal employees, employment practices in the federal government would be in line with those of America’s largest and most successful corporations, including AT&T, General Motors, and Raytheon. Kenneth Jowitt moderates.</p> <p>This is the second panel of a three panel event on Political Succession in Russia hosted by the Hoover Institution.</p> <p>Kathryn Stoner-Weiss is Associate Director for Research and Senior Research Scholar at CDDRL. Prior to coming to Stanford, she was on the faculty at Princeton University for nine years, jointly appointed to the Department of Politics and the Woodrow Wilson School for International and Public Affairs. At Princeton she received the Ralph O. Glendinning Preceptorship awarded to outstanding junior faculty. She also served as a Visiting Associate Professor of Political Science at Columbia University, and an Assistant Professor of Political Science at McGill University. She has held fellowships at Harvard University as well as the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, DC.</p> <p>In addition to many articles and book chapters on contemporary Russia, she is the author of two single authored books: Resisting the State: Reform and Retrenchment in Post-Soviet Russia (Cambridge, 2006), and Local Heroes: The Political Economy of Russian Regional Governance (Princeton, 1997). She is also co-editor (along with Michael McFaul) of After the Collapse of Communism: Comparative Lessons of Transitions (Cambridge, 2004).</p> <p>She received a BA and MA in Political Science from the University of Toronto, and a PhD in Government from Harvard University.
