<p><p>Republican Representative Walter Jones not only calls for Rove to testify before the House Judiciary Committee but SMACKS President Bush while doing so: </p><p>"In the year 2000 when President Bush was a candidate he said many times in debate he would bring dignity to the White House. This would be a great start if Karl Rove would come before the Judiciary Committee and let him explain his involvement, if any, in the Don Siegelman case." </p><p>Meanwhile Democratic Rep. Linda Sanchez states that she "personally would love to see" Rove arrested and held in jail where there would be a trial in the House of Representatives. </p></p>

<p><p>In a new installment of Bush League Justice today, guest Julian Epstein, former counsel to the House Judiciary Committee, stated that Republicans will admit, off-camera, that the case against former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman was fixed. </p><p>The segment concentrated on Karl Rove finally giving written answers to questions, NOT under oath, about the Siegelman case. The questions, which were posed by Lamar Smith (R-TX), and answers can be read at <a href="http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/07/karl_rove_issues_new_denials_i.php">Talking Points Memo</a>. </p><p> While the general consensus is that the softball questions were a "pathetic attempt to save Karl Rove," the effort appears to have failed. In the video above, Epstein states that Rove actually appears to "incriminate" himself by refusing to answer a specific question about whether he contacted non-state officials. </p><p>Marcy Wheeler agrees with Epstein over at <a href="http://emptywheel.firedoglake.com/2008/07/23/rove-all-but-confirms-he-did-talk-to-non-doj-people-about-siegelman/">emptywheel</a>: "In a classic non-denial denial, Karl Rove makes it clear that he did talk to people about Siegelman's prosecution--even while he denies that he spoke to anyone in DOJ about it." And <a href="http://www.atlargely.com/2008/07/rep-lamar-smith.html">Larisa Alexandrovna thinks,</a> "This is getting to be rather fun," before proceeding to rip apart Rove's answer with the facts. <p><p>At Netroots Nation, we asked former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman whether the House Judiciary Committee had subpoenaed Karl Rove to testify about anything that could be construed as his "<a href="http://emptywheel.firedoglake.com/2008/07/11/the-significance-of-the-official-duties-claim/">official duties</a>," which is what White House Counsel Fred Fielding has suggested.</p><p>Siegelman's response:</p><blockquote><div class="wbq"><p>How could it possibly be part of Karl Rove's offical duties to hijack the Department of Justice and use it as a political tool to prosecute those people whom they don't like or whom they think are political opponents? </p> <p>Karl Rove was involved in the allocation of resoures to the Department of Justice and there is a question, certainly a question is raised as to his conduct and the people that he put into place over at the Department of Justice and whether they were programmed to abuse power for political reasons.</p> </div></blockquote><p>According to the <a href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/presidentbush/2008/07/siegelman-to-co.html"><em>LA Times</em></a>, the HJC has called on Rove to testify about his involvement in Siegelman's case, as well as the politicization of the Department of Justice. So far, Rove has refused to testify under oath, <a href="http://emptywheel.firedoglake.com/2008/07/10/bush-did-not-invoke-executive-privilege-for-rove/">falsely claiming executive privilege</a> and immunity as an aide to the president. </p><p>Just because Rove has been the mastermind behind one of the most criminal administrations in U.S. history does not make him above the law. And in this case, he could be breaking it on multiple counts: his politically motivated prosecutions of leaders like Siegelman AND his failure to comply with a Congressional subpoena. </p><p>Siegelman wants you to <a href="http://salsa.wiredforchange.com/o/5180/t/3541/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=2248">urge Congress to hold Rove in contempt</a>. <p><p>On This Week this morning George Stephanopoulos asked Karl Rove if he denied contacting the Justice Department prosecuting former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman. He responded with a textbook non-denial denial.</p><p>If Siegelman's and Alabama GOP lawyer Jill Simpson's stories are true, that would make this case the centerpiece example of the corruption of the DOJ revealed by the US Attorney firing scandal. In fact, it would make most of what we know now seem minor by comparison. </p></p>

<p><p>Only in this Bush administration can one repeatedly state that they know absolutely nothing about a matter and then claim executive privilege as the reason for refusing to testify before Congress about said matter. But that is exactly what Karl Rove did today. Thus, despite claiming no knowledge about the Siegelman prosecution, Rove is now admitting that he advised the President about it. </p><p>In any case, by exerting executive privilege, Rove has now made former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman's claims that he was wrongfully prosecuted that much stronger. Why on earth would Bush have had any conversations about the Siegelman matter with Rove? This would seem improper on its face. </p><p>The above video is another Bush League Justice segment with Dan Abrams's interviewing Representative Linda Sanchez about what happens next.</p></p>

Someone's got to kick his ass." </p><p>If Rove doesn't appear before Conyers's committee soon, Conyers said, "We'll do what any self-respecting committee would do. We'd hold him in contempt. Either that or go and have him arrested."</p> <p> </p></p>
