Henry Alfred Kissinger was the 56th Secretary of State of the United States from 1973 to 1977, continuing to hold the position of Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs which he first assumed in 1969 until 1975. After leaving government service, he founded Kissinger Associates, an international consulting firm, of which he is chairman.

Peter M. Robinson is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution, where he writes about business and politics, edits Hoover's quarterly journal, the Hoover Digest, and hosts Hoover's television program, Uncommon Knowledge. Robinson is also the author of three books: How Ronald Reagan Changed My Life; It's My Party: A Republican's Messy Love Affair with the GOP; and the best-selling business book Snapshots from Hell: The Making of an MB.

What's Wrong with a Little PsyOps?

Last month, The New York Times published its front-page exposé of the Pentagon's strategy of using military analysts. The retired officers who frequently appeared on TV were the ideal vehicle to broadcast the administration's message on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. "Message force multipliers," Pentagon officials called them.

Well, earlier this week, the Pentagon released all of the documents that had been turned over to the Times. It is a staggering load. But most immediately intriguing is audio of some of the briefings at the Pentagon, including two featuring Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.

The audio we've excerpted here comes from a meeting on April 18, 2006. It was an emergency meeting called because earlier in the month, several retired generals had hit the airwaves demanding that Rumsfeld resign. 17 analysts attended the briefing, which featured Rumsfeld and then-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Peter Pace. It was a remarkable display of servility, with one analyst at one point proclaiming that Rumsfeld need to get out there on the "offense," because "we'd love to be following our leader, as indeed you are. You are the leader. You are our guy."

CAUGHT: Pentagon Pundits Infiltrate Mainstream News

Our friends at Freepress.net sent this shocking video along to us. According to a recent article in the NY Times, the so-called "objective" military pundits that have been appearing all over the mainstream media networks for the last few years were mere puppets of the Pentagon and Bush administration.

Beginning with the buildup to the Iraq War, the Bush administration created this "media Trojan horse" to counter any and all criticism. At times, they manipulated the networks' own military experts, spoon-feeding them talking points on everything from Iraq to Rumsfeld's handling of the war to Guantanamo. Here's a quote from the Times:

Again and again, records show, the administration has enlisted analysts as a rapid reaction force to rebut what it viewed as critical news coverage, some of it by the networks’ own Pentagon correspondents. For example, when news articles revealed that troops in Iraq were dying because of inadequate body armor, a senior Pentagon official wrote to his colleagues: “I think our analysts — properly armed — can push back in that arena.”

This is pro-war propaganda at its most insidious. Make sure you take action: sign Free Press's petition and call on Congress to demand better media.

What Does a Car Bomb Look Like?

It's hard to believe that back in 2004 and right after the horrors of Abu Ghraib were exposed, then Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld had restricted the use of cell phones, digital cameras, camcorders, computers and had restricted soldiers from having any access the internet, especially if the destination was YouTube and MySpace (which are nowadays blocked by the Pentagon).

Yet even though the Pentagon tries to stifle soldiers' access to the internet, many still find ways to get the word out back home to family and friends and onto the pages of blogs or YouTube.

I have scoured YouTube looking for soldier-produced video clips. Some of them are harrowing and not appropriate for this blog. Others, like this car bomb clip, are almost in the category of surreal.

For one, this clip is like hundreds of others I've seen so far: A soldier filming a drive down a road or highway for like what seems like an eternity and then, boom!, it literally happens. Second, I loved the description on the video clip's page: "just got emailed this." Third, at the time of this writing, less than 20,000 people have seen this clip. It's not too shabby for a clip that was "just emailed", but it's telling that it's not looking to "shock and awe" people with any production quality and thus it remains in YouTube a rather obscure find.
