TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: "Let's put our country above party. . . that's what we need to do for America. [applause] And the brave young Americans who are serving and are fighting. So, so, I also want to caution you, please remember this, if you forget everything I have told you. Al-Qaeda is on the run. They are not defeated. They are not defeated, ok? We've got a long way to go. And you're still going to see politicians who are going to say, even Republicans, "well, let's set a date for withdrawal, let's pull out." The one to decide that for us is Gen Petraeus my friends. He's the only one. Because this is still a very, very tough enemy. There's still explosive devices of the most lethal kind crossing the Iranian border into Iraq and killing young Americans. There's still suicide bombers landing at the airport in Damascus that are coming across into Iraq in order to kill themselves, in order to take the lives of young Americans . . . "

John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
Des Moines, IA 05/01/08

TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: "Thank you for coming to Iowa again Senator McCain. The Democrats want to leave Iraq to use our own hard-earned tax money to pay for the publics' health care . . . Now will you be able to stand with courage and tell them that we can't afford to that because we need to stay in Iraq for a long time for our national security and to get the job done?"

JOHN MCCAIN: "I thank you. I believe that the key to American's dissatisfaction or satisfaction about the conflict in Iraq is not so much about whether we are there or not, the question is whether American casualties can be brought to end so that if after this war is won we decide to remain in Iraq the way that we remain in South Korea after the Korean War and provide a force for stability there on the Korean Peninsula and in Asia. After the Gulf War . . . we had, we have a military security arrangement with the country of Kuwait, that we liberated at that time in the first Gulf War. Americans are not dissatisfied with that situation. What we need to do is have the Iraqi military and government take over those responsibilities and Americans withdraw and Americans play a support role. When the Americans are in the front lines in these battles against al-Qaeda, and the Shiite militias, and the Jihadists, then of course Americans are gonna become injured and tragically we just saw a spike up in the last month, let's have some straight talk. But there's also some ferocious battles going on right now in Iraq, particularly in Baghdad. Al-Sadr's people are doing everything they can to keep control of that part of Baghdad. And we've had a tragic loss of American's most precious treasure in those, in those battles. But I believe we are kind of at a very important point in this war right now, if we can gain control of what is known as Sadr City. We have another huge battle raging in the city of Mosul, which you don't read much about. We were able to gain control of Basra, the major city in the South. So it's long and hard and tough and frustrating. So my message to the American people is the strategy is succeeding, we've got a great General, and I believe that that strategy can show success in making sure the government and the military of the Iraqis take over those responsibilities. And I also want to say again, I believe that if we set a date for withdrawal such as Senator Obama and Senator Clinton want, that you will see al-Qaeda declare victory, the militias and the other forces against the government gain more and more traction, and I believe that you will see strife on a very large scale which will then result in chaos in the region and would require us to be back. And I also want to add one other footnote and that is that we remain and become more and more concerned about Iranian involvement in Iraq, as far as particularly supply of weapons and even training of individuals. I think you're gonna have seen and are gonna see that we have recently captured weapons, newly manufactured, that were made in Iran. Some of the most explosive, lethal explosive devices that are in Iraq today have been manufactured and transported out of Iran. This is another significant challenge we face."

TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: " As we all know, the American people have grown sick and tired of the war in Iraq. I understand that. Of course, I too, have been made sick at heart by the many mistakes made by civilian and military commanders and the terrible price we have paid for them. But we cannot react to those mistakes by embracing a course of action that will be an even greater mistake, a mistake of colossal historical proportions, which will -- and I am sure of this -- seriously endanger the security of the country I have served all my adult life. We have new commanders in Iraq, [applause] and they are following a counterinsurgency strategy that we should have been following from the beginning, which makes the most effective use of our strength and doesn't strengthen the tactics of our enemy. This new battle plan is succeeding where our previous tactics failed. The Government of Iraq and the Iraqi Army are now taking more responsibility for the security of their own country and fighting successfully in Basra, Sadr City and Mosul. . ."

The consequences would threaten us for years, and I am certain would eventually draw us into a wider and more difficult war that would impose even greater sacrifices on us. Our defeat in Iraq would catastrophic, not just for Iraq but for us! I cannot be complicit in it! I will do whatever I can, whether I am effective or not, to help avert it."

-----

Jordanian Ambassador to the United States Prince Zeid Ra'ad Zeid Al-Hussein speaks at The Commonwealth Club of California about the current state of affairs in Middle Eastern countries including Jordan, Israel, Iraq and Iran.
