In Niger, there are too many mouths to feed, and not enough productive land. The country already struggles with extreme poverty but now Niger is being hard hit by climate change.

Rural populations are being starved off their land and as a result there is a mass exodus into the cities.

In the U.S., pastries may cost a few pennies more. But in Pakistan and Egypt, soaring wheat prices have caused bread riots, and in the poorest countries, babies will starve. The wheat crisis is caused by a nexus of factors - drought in Australia, growing demand in Asia, market speculation, and even the use of food to make biofeuls. The effects make clear that the global economy is, for some, a trap they cannot see, or escape.

Georgia Governor To Hold "Pray For Rain" Service

Governor seeks divine intervention to get some rain
Invitations going out for prayer service at Capitol on Tuesday
The service is scheduled for Tuesday at 11:45 a.m. on the Washington Street side of the statehouse.
Heather Teilhet, his spokeswoman, said the governor began talking about wanting to host a service to pray for rain on his way back from Washington D.C. last week. He was in D.C. meeting with federal officials and the governors of Alabama and Florida to discuss the region's water crisis.

"Georgia needs rain. The issue at the heart of our drought problems is a lack of rain," Teilhet said. "And there is nothing the government can do to make that happen.

Seems he's not alone though- Governor Bob Riley of Alabama had a "Pray for Rain" week back in June. Doesn't look like it worked all that well. Maybe they should reconsider the Raindance.
