Myth: There is no scientific evidence proving marijuana's therapeutic qualities.

Reality: In a White House-commissioned 1999 report, the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine declared that "nausea, appetite loss, pain, and anxiety are all afflictions of wasting and all can be mitigated by marijuana."

Myth: Marijuana's potential health benefits are insignificant compared to the damage caused by smoking the drug.

Reality: Marijuana need not be administered by smoking: It can be taken in food, tea, or through a smokeless vaporizer. Furthermore, a 2006 study by a leading pulmonologist, Dr. Donald Tashkin, found that even regular and heavy smoking of marijuana does not lead to lung cancer.

Do you have a more concrete answer for what you do for somewhat like Frank who's a veteran like yourself, in a wheelchair, amputee, and can't pay [...] his prescription drug bill?

JOHN MCCAIN: "Well the first thing that I would do is make sure that, if he's a veteran, that he gets vet—eligibility for veterans' care. [...] Now we all know about Walter Reed and we know about some of the problems of veterans health care. But there is a flip side to that. And there's a lot of veterans health care facilities that are wonderful [...].

Second of all, [...] there's Social Security disability payments, there are other programs. But if he's not eligible [...] I will make sure that we address that issue [...] A Medi-gap issue is there and we're gonna have to address it as well and put a fix in. No American should go without health care; that's one of the obligations of our society.

MCCAIN: "But I also have to tell you if the costs of health care continue to skyrocket, and we don't do anything about that, we're not gonna have affordable and available health care for any American. And we have got to get those costs under control because there are not incentives now for people to keep health care costs down. And that's many of the proposals that I have outlined. Including [...] outcome-based care. [...] There's a pilot program, which has been very successful. It's called cash-in counseling, where we have given seniors actually the money in order to take care of their own health care needs. [...]

Togo's zero tolerance towards drugs - 6 Jul 08

For the second time in the past 10 days, Colombian police say they have arrested a kingpin of a major cocaine cartel.

According to the police, Oscar Veral Carcia commanded a "group of hired assassins" working for the infamous Norte del Valle cartel.

'Capachivo' - as he is also known - is on Washington's most wanted list of cocaine traffickers.

Drug trafficking is also a problem across the Atlantic Ocean in West Africa.

Police in the west African state of Togo, are cracking down on drug traffickers and implementing a policy of zero tolerance when it comes to this growing problem.

Last month, 24 million dollars worth of narcotics were seized by the Togolese security forces and destroyed.

Drug trafficking through Africa is not a new phenomenon; however West Africa is increasingly becoming a hub for smuggling narcotics because of lax policing.

The small nation of Togo is battling a rise in drug-related crimes as Al Jazeera's Sherine Tadros reports.

The UN released a report saying that the six-year boom has led to the Afghan crop being responsible for 92% of the world's heroin trade. With Homeland Security and the War on Terror, it's amazing that the drug still gets into the USA, one of it's strongest marketplaces.

A UN is to warn in a new report that there is a surge in illegal opium being smuggled from Afghanistan into Pakistan and Iran. Thousands of Iranian forces have died in the 30 year campaign against the narcotics trade. But the US and the European Union are now threatening to cut off crucial funding for those operations unless Iran halts uranium enrichment.Al Jazeera's Nazanine Moshiri reports on the battle between police and drug smugglers from the

Drug-related violence has left more than 4,000 Mexicans dead in the last two years.
