No surprise here:

Rep. Duncan Hunter has abandoned his bid for the Republican presidential nomination, the California congressman said in a statement released Saturday evening.

“Today we end this campaign,” said Hunter, according to an advance copy of his remarks he was scheduled to deliver later in the evening.
The California Republican, an outspoken proponent of cracking down on illegal immigration, did poorly in the Nevada GOP caucuses held earlier in the day.

This is very nearly irrelevant, isn't it?

How many ways is this funny? First, to even get on television, Duncan Hunter has to literally walk out onto political programs uninvited. Or perhaps he was just looking for defense contractors with mysterious envelopes that smell of the U.S. Treasury Department and got lost.

Second, he actually makes a good point. He has a delegate from the Wyoming Caucuses. John McCain and Rudy Giuliani have no delegates. In other words, right now, they're losing to Hunter.

Underdog GOP presidential candidate Duncan Hunter will be making “a major announcement regarding the future of his presidential bid” this afternoon in New Hampshire.
The conservative California congressman won a single delegate in Wyoming’s Republican presidential caucuses this weekend, but is barely registering in Granite State polls, and has faced persistent campaign cash woes. He did not qualify for either of the state's official GOP primary debates over the weekend.

That's okay, Dunc, Ron Paul did, but Fox kept him out anyway.

Leading Republican Candidates Agree to Spanish Debate
After a similar Republican debate in September was cancelled due to the leading candidates' non-participation, the Miami Herald reports that Fred Thompson, Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney agreed Thursday to participate in Univision's GOP Spanish-language debate at the University of Miami on December 9, joining John McCain, Ron Paul and Duncan Hunter.
The difference: "Fred Thompson wasn't an official candidate when the debate was proposed, giving him an opening to take the lead. With their candidate facing mixed reviews after two months in the race, the Thompson campaign said Thursday afternoon that he was in."
"Less than two hours later, Giuliani and Romney said they would be there, too."

Can't wait to see what happens with this.

Yes, it's time to steal a few more jokes from my father-in-law. For those of you who might be new here, he used to write for Alan King, Milton Berle and Jonathan Winters, just to name a few. And all those Dean Martin Roasts, too: Don Rickles, Red Buttons, Phyllis Diller, Sammy Davis, Jr., etc.

I bet he could even make Blackwater sound funny. Okay, no...let's not ask the impossible.

A tiny respite from all the frustrating events of the day:

After being denounced for her "Jews need to be perfected" remarks, Ann Coulter said she is not anti-Semitic. In fact, she claims she even had relatives who were killed in a Concentration Camp - Two great-uncles fell off a guard tower.
Rudy Giuliani's basic philosophy during the debate was, "There's nothing wrong with the economy - and if you elect me, I'll fix it."

Representative Duncan Hunter is one of the most private of those running. He's the only candidate with an unlisted charisma.

Speaking of dull. Mike Huckabee met Sam Brownback after the debate, they said "Hi" and their suits fell asleep.
After much prodding, Al Gore has finally come out with his answer. He will NOT be running for president. He's afraid he'll win.

A second tier straw poll with a low turnout has to have a second tier winner. And the winner is....?

::drum roll:: Duncan Hunter.

Republican presidential hopeful Duncan Hunter scored a symbolic victory on Saturday, winning a low-turnout Texas straw poll that drew only a few second-tier candidates in the White House race.
Hunter, a California congressman, whose big issues are border security and strong national defense, took about 41 percent of the 1,300 votes cast.

Can you hear me now?

Oh, and that handsome, rugged, sex symbol, Thespian Fred, came in second at 20%. And Ron Paul? He was third at 17%. Quite a trio.

The results are nonbinding but the Republican Party of Texas billed the event as a chance to gauge the mood of activists in one of the most conservative U.S. states.

I don't know about them activists, but I'm in a pretty good mood, what with that scandalous Larry Craig news cycle and all.

Hunter is one of the political architects of plans for a controversial security wall along the U.S. border with Mexico.

That 'splains everything. Hola Hunter, adios Mexican-American relations. Unless you like useless-yet-symbolic fences.

Then again, this was a useless-yet-symbolic straw poll.

The poll drew none of the top Republican candidates.

Straw polls like this do have their up sides:

Tina Benkiser, who chairs the state Republican Party, said big-name candidates, like Thompson and Republican front-runner Rudy Guiliani, had fueled resentment that they were using Texas as a "giant ATM machine" to raise funds without appearing in the state.

Rudy and Freddy: Texas's feel-good candidates. I can't wait to see how they do in Florida.
