Complete video at: fora.tv

Technology expert Bill Weihl recommends three steps consumers can take for greener computing habits.

-----

The digital age continues to improve our quality of life, but advanced computing technology has thus far meant greater energy consumption that has taken a heavy environmental toll.

This panel of energy experts will explore how computers contribute to and can help solve today's most pressing environmental challenges - The Commonwealth Club of California

Bill Weihl is currently working on clean energy at Google. Before joining Google in early 2006, he was CTO at Akamai Technologies, where he led efforts to provide customers with more powerful computing capabilities on edge servers. He has also worked on distributed and parallel computing and on cpu architecture, first as a professor at MIT and then as a researcher at DEC's Systems Research Center (SRC).

Hat tip to Scholars and Rogues for this 60 Minutes story showing the seamy underside of consumer-electronics recycling--as in exporting, in violation of United States law and international conventions, waste electronics components to the so-called "People's Republic of China" under the banner of "recycling."

As in cathode ray tubes from computers.

CPU drives.

Even the motherboards.

And the recycling methods shown are, to put it mildly, Not For the Squeamish or Easily-Offended.

Translating, all in all, to perhaps the single worst concentration of carcinogenic substances found in the local populace anywhere in the world by way of e-waste being torched just to extract recyclable components such as lead, gold, mercury and cadmium, for which peasant farmers as would otherwise be without work earn the equivalent of US$8/diem. And pay the price for it in health damage.

Think about it before you consider replacing your older consumer electronics for newer models, never mind that many states (Minnesota among them) now require consumer-electronics manufacturers to have recycling schemes in place, and to cover the costs of same.

===================================

Calm whisper of the praying which heighth of the celebration noise you inform: The Exaggerator (...and forget thou not The Exaggerator Collection)

A container of electronic waste (e-waste) from Port of Oakland in the US was intercepted in Hong Kong by Greenpeace activists. After months of research, we determined that the container was destined for Sanshui district in mainland China meaning that - under Chinese law - the import was illegal. Activists boarded the YM Success, pitched a tent on top of the containers and prevented the illegal e-waste from being offloaded.
