Former Arkansas Governor and Republican Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee dismisses the October 2008 bailout of the U.S. financial markets as "one of the dumbest things that Congress has done in a long time." Huckabee partially attributes John McCain's election loss to his support of the bailout plan.

-----

Mike Huckabee is best known for his surprising success during the 2008 Republican presidential primaries. He won more than four million votes nationwide and captured eight states.

He served as the governor of Arkansas from 1996 to 2007. Before entering politics, he was ordained as a Southern Baptist minister and worked for twelve years as full-time pastor. Huckabee's run for Republican presidential nomination was truly amazing.

But beyond the headlines, few understand his transformation from a long-shot Evangelical candidate into a viable contender. Huckabee's story and low-budget grassroots campaign, impressed many.

The middle-class and working-class voters responded nationwide with great passion, volunteering and making small donations, transforming his campaign into a true movement.

Huckabee will be releasing his long-awaited memoir, Do the Right Thing - Hudson Union Society

Mike Huckabee was the Republican governor of the U.S. state of Arkansas from 1996 to 2007 and is a candidate for the 2008 United States presidential election. Huckabee is the author of several books, an ordained Southern Baptist minister, a public speaker, and a musician, playing bass guitar in his rock band, Capitol Offense.

Complete video at: fora.tv

Los Angeles Times Financial Correspondent Peter G. Gosselin wonders if it's time for a new "financial survivalism," and warns American workers to keep an eye on their employee benefits packages.

-----

Housing bust, credit crunch, unemployment and high commodity prices (oil anyone?) are familiar faces in the news, and they all lead up to the most dreaded word of all - "recession."

Unemployed? Self-employed? A small business owner? A family just trying to survive?

Some believe that no one may be safe this time around. With economic worries mounting, we talk to the experts to find out how to survive these trying times - The Commonwealth Club of California

Peter G. Gosselin has been national economics correspondent for the Los Angeles Times since 1999. His latest series was The New Deal: If America is Richer, Why Are Its Families So Much Less Secure?

He has also worked at the Boston Globe, The Providence Journal, The (North Adams, Mass.) Transcript and the Catskill (N.Y.) Daily Mail.

He graduated from Brown University with a degree in philosophy and was a Bagehot Fellow at Columbia University, where he received an MBA in economics.

His reporting has earned him the National Headliner Award, the George Polk Award (twice), and the SDXX award.

Laura Tyson, former National Economic Advisor to President Clinton, argues that infrastructure spending and health care reform should be two policies at the heart of the next President's economic recovery plan.

-----

As debate on the recession moves from "if" to "when" to "how long," The New School's Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis (SCEPA) and the New America Foundation host a panel entitled "It's the Economic Recovery Plan, Stupid," with top economists and business executives.

The panel will discuss the economic and political realities behind the debate on how best to stimulate the economy, including how a major public infrastructure investment might serve as a centerpiece of a longer-term recovery program.

SCEPA will also present a new publication, The Promise of Public Investment, based on its year-long series of forums designed to question conventional wisdom on U.S. economic policy - The New School

Laura D'Andrea Tyson is a professor and former Dean of the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Tyson served in the Clinton Administration from January 1993 through December 1996. Between February 1995 and December 1996 she served as the President's National Economic Adviser and was the highest ranking woman in the Clinton White House.

Prior to her appointment as National Economic Adviser, Dr. Tyson served as the sixteenth Chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, the first woman to hold that post. In that capacity, she was responsible for providing the president and his National Economic Council with advice and analysis on all economic policy matters, for preparing the administration's economic forecasts and for the annual Economic Report of the President.

From 2002 to 2006, Tyson was the first female dean of the London Business School. From 1998 to 2001, she was dean of the Haas School of Business. Tyson has been a member of the Council on Foreign Relations since 1987, a Director of ATT Inc. since 1999, and a Director of Eastman Kodak.

Complete video at: fora.tv

Kemal Derviş, Head of the United Nations Development Programme, discusses impacts of climate change on long-term economic planning.

-----

Prosperity and Inequality: Debates in India and China Keynote Address by Kemal Dervis

India and China are emerging as major players in the global political economy of this century, having enjoyed record growth rates for the past five years. Yet each faces major social and economic challenges. Both countries are dealing with growing social unrest, widespread poverty, and rising energy needs in a world market shaped by dwindling oil supplies.

China's growth is creating massive disparities between its urban and rural sectors, resulting in protests against state authority and restless migrant populations. Citizens face a steady degradation of public health due to runaway industrial growth, while capitalists chafe against the state's tight control of the market. In India, the epidemic of suicides among farmers and episodes of violence against minorities have cast doubts on the benefits of wholesale economic liberalization, unfettered foreign investment, and growth, which are also being challenged by the rise of judicial activism and of an active, vocal civil society.

The India China Institute at The New School, now in its third year of sponsoring fellowships, public debates, and research collaborations between experts in India, China, and the United States, is hosting "Prosperity and Inequality: Debates in India and China," a major conference exploring these issues. Participants in the conference, including our own fellows from all three countries as well as experts on urbanization, globalization, and growth in India and China, will discuss Chinese and Indian urbanization and wealth formation, the social and political risks associated with skyrocketing growth in two massive agrarian societies, alternative designs for development in each society, and the quest in both societies for a "third way" of development that combines the virtues of socialism and capitalism without sacrificing democracy and grassroots inclusion - The New School
