A week on from a huge rockslide that buried much of an Egyptian shanty town, bodies are still being pulled from the rubble.

Many of those who survived the rockfall have been promised new housing by Egyptian authorities.

But seven days on, they have been forced to sleep in the open as they wait for the government to fulfil its promise.

Egyptian authorities are promising to launch a full review of the country's shanty towns.

On Saturday, a rockfall sent boulders crashing onto dozens of homes in one of Cairo's biggest slums.

Officials now say the death toll stands at 51, but some estimates say there are still hundreds of people missing in the rubble.

Dozens of homes have been crushed after huge chunks of hillside smashed down onto them.

This week on The Listening Post, we bring you a critique of the media coverage of the run up to and during the week-long Republican National Convention.

In News Divide, we see what happened when the McCain 'Straight Talk Express' made a stop at in Minnesota for the Republican National Convention, despite the threat of derailment by Hurricane Gustav and shock news of a teenage pregnancy.

Like the Democratic party did the past week during its convention, the Republicans wanted to seize this opportunity to display party unity and show off McCain's chosen running mate: Sarah Palin. However, with Hurricane Gustav cutting a devastating path along the Gulf Coast, the party re-choreographed the event to avoid a major PR blunder. When the hurricane was at its fiercest, reporters learned that the dyed-in-the-wool conservative's daughter, Bristol Palin, was about to become a mother, out of wedlock and at the age of 17.

In the second half of our show, Salah Khadr poses the following question: was the release of Ingrid Betancourt (and 14 other hostages) by the South American FARC rebel group earlier this year too good to be true?

It has been alleged that military personnel impersonated both humanitarian workers in the form of Red Cross and journalists from pan-Latin American TV station, Telesur, as part of the ruse that enabled them to get close to the guerrillas, and release the hostages.

The against-all-the-odds success of 'Operation Checkmate' raises a whole host of questions, with regards to the mode of rescue and the long term implications it may have on journalists and aid workers in similar situations.

In Newsbytes, we revisit the case of imprisoned Egyptian blogger, Kareem Amer and the new laws that the Mubarak government is employing to keep tabs on internet users. We report on Ingushetian journalist, Magomed Yevloyev, who was shot in the head whilst in Russian police custody. Finally, still in Russia, we see how prime minister and self-styled Action Man figure, Vladimir Putin, supposedly acted the hero when he shot a predatory Siberian tiger dead.

Artsworld visits Kanid, a teenage band who are reviving ancient songs and confronting ancient taboos in a thoroughly modern manner at this year's Rainforest festival in Borneo.

The Kanid group from the Kelabit highlands of Sarawak in Borneo formed a few years ago with the aim of conserving long-forgotten songs and musical traditions.

The revival of these traditional songs has reignited the community's pride in their cultural identity.

Plus, bridges and flyovers in run-down parts of the Egyptian capital are becoming unlikely venues for underground art.

When one man set about cleaning up a neglected space beneath a Cairo bridge, the area was transformed into one of the country's most successful independent art venues.

Part 2 (also available via YouTube)features South African writer and performance poet Lesego Rampolokeng plus an arts project at Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, UK, that aims to steer inner-city youth away from drugs and gangs and help them realise their potential as artists.

In Egypt, dozens of firefighters have been working to tackle a major blaze that's engulfed the country's upper house of parliament in Cairo. Rescue teams were hampered by a lack of water.

The attempt by western politicians and media to present this week's carnage in the Gaza Strip as a legitimate act of Israeli self-defence - or at best the latest phase of a wearisome conflict between two somehow equivalent sides - has reached Alice-in-Wonderland proportions. Since Israel's deputy defence minister, Matan Vilnai, issued his chilling warning last week that Palestinians faced a "holocaust" if they continued to fire home-made rockets into Israel, the balance sheet of suffering has become ever clearer. More than 120 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza by Israeli forces in the past week, of whom one in five were children and more than half were civilians, according to the Israeli human rights group B'Tselem. During the same period, three Israelis were killed, two of whom were soldiers taking part in the attacks.

AMMAN, March 11--Palestinian Authority chief Mahmud Abbas says that the Israeli occupying regime and the resistance movement Hamas are "agreed in principle" on a truce that will end the crisis in the occupied territories.

The Israeli regime and Hamas appeared Monday to be abiding by a tacit agreement to hold fire in and around the Gaza Strip, amid Egyptian efforts to secure a broader truce deal after a bloody explosion of violence there.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh appreciated "what Egypt is undertaking".

He said Hamas "will help the Egyptian leadership to reach a reciprocal and simultaneous truce that will at the same time lead to the lifting of the blockade imposed on the Palestinian people".

After talks with Jordan's King Abdullah II in Amman, Abbas said: "Hamas also wants to protect its leaders and those of Islamic Jihad from the Israelis, and I think Israel agrees on that or has already agreed."

"With the developments in Egypt, I think there is an agreement in principle on that and a deal might be reached in the coming few days," Abbas said in a statement.
