Today in Springfield, IL Sen. Barack Obama selected Sen. Joe Biden to be his running mate for the presidency. Jacob Soboroff interviewed both for the Why Tuesday? Candidate Challenge last October. The ask was for candidates to discuss their plans for increasing voter participation, since the USA ranks near the bottom of all countries. Obama told Jacob he supported the idea of weekend voting to increase voter participation, but Biden said he wouldn't necessarily support weekend voting.

U.S. Representative Steve Israel (D-NY) sits down with Jacob Soboroff of Why Tuesday? in Washington, D.C., and becomes the first member of Congress to report as a Why Tuesday? correspondent!

Rep. Israel recently introduced the Weekend Voting Act into the House in an attempt to move election day from "the Tuesday after the first Monday in November," as it has been since 1845, to Saturday and Sunday. Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI) introduced the same bill into the Senate earlier this year.

For more information: http://whytuesday.org

Oregon is the only state in the Union that votes entirely by mail, and as NPR's Ina Jaffe reported last week, that's not only changing the way campaigns conduct their get-out-the-vote efforts, it also removes the tradition of the secret ballot entirely from Oregon's voting system. This week for Why Tuesday? Jacob Soboroff met with United States Postal Service Communications Program Specialist Larry H. Dozier to learn more about voting-by-mail.

For more: http://whytuesday.org

Here's NPR's Ina Jaffe report.

Instant runoff voting (IRV) allows voters to mark the election ballot with their sequential preference for candidates. It's as easy as 1-2-3. If your chosen candidate is not viable in the first round of counting, then your vote gets tallied for your second choice, and so on. Ultimately, the candidate who wins does so with a majority of the vote.

IRV is currently used in certain state and local elections, and some other countries have also adopted this form of voting. Simply put, IRV gives more power to one's vote. It makes sure that every vote truly does matter (no more arguments about throwing away one's vote on non-viable or third-party candidates). It allows voters to demonstrate through their support of different candidates what issues are important to them, such that elected officials can acknowledge these concerns once in office.

You can learn more about IRV through these sites:

The Road to Better Elections

Fair Vote

More than 2,000 Iowa caucus-goers and over 1,600 voters from 32 other states were at the Heartland Presidential Forum, where everyday Americans took the stage to ask real questions about real issues to leading presidential candidates.

In this clip, Senator Hillary Clinton faces tough questions about immigration issues. It's clear that while anti-immigrant forces are extremely vocal in politics today, most Americans believe in fairness and equality and demand our next president support immigrant rights and a path to citizenship.

Former Alaska Senator and 2008 Democratic Presidential candidate Mike Gravel talks about his plans for a "National Initiative," whereby American citizens would vote directly on matters of national policy.

-----

Mike Gravel sits down for a talk at the Commonwealth Club of California.

With the primaries fast approaching, The Club once again serves as an important stop on the campaign trail as we bring you an unparalleled, up-close-and-personal conversation with Democratic candidate Gravel. Gravel, an outspoken former two-term U.S. senator from Alaska, has staked out positions that place him often in direct confrontation with his own party.

During the Vietnam War, Gravel fiercely opposed legislation to renew the military draft and also played a key role in the release of the Pentagon Papers. He has remained committed to the ideals of direct democracy and led a constitutional amendment effort modeled after the state ballot initiatives that would allow American voters to become "law makers" and introduce federal ballot initiatives. From his advocacy for a universal health-care system to the support of a guest worker program, learn more about how Gravel plans to be the "Man for America" - Commonwealth Club of California

Maurice Robert "Mike" Gravel, is a former Democratic United States Senator from Alaska, having served for two terms, from 1969 to 1981. He is primarily known for his efforts in ending the draft following the Vietnam War and for having put the Pentagon Papers into the public record in 1971. He is currently a candidate for the 2008 Democratic nomination for President of the United States.
