It's Election Day, 2008. We Democrats are giving America a wake up call. Wake up America. In 2001, the oil companies, the war contractors and the neo-con artists seized the economy, and have added four trillion dollars of unproductive spending to the national debt.

We now pay four times more for defense, three times more for gasoline and home heating oil, and twice what we paid for health care. Millions of Americans have lost their jobs, their homes, their health care, their pensions. Trillions of dollars for an unnecessary war paid with borrowed money. Tens of billions of dollars in cash and weapons disappeared into thin air, at the cost of the lives of our troops and innocent Iraqis, while all the President's oilmen are maneuvering to grab Iraq's oil.

Borrowed money to bomb bridges in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. No money to rebuild bridges in America. Money to start a hot war with Iran. Now we have another cold war with Russia while the American economy has become a game of Russian roulette.

If there was an Olympics for misleading, mismanaging and misappropriating this Administration would take the gold. World records for violations of national and international laws. They want another four year term to continue to alienate our allies, spend our children's inheritance and hollow out our economy. We can't afford it America.

John McCain
Employee Town Hall
Erie, PA 08/11/08

TRASCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: Yessir.

WOMAN IN AUDIENCE: What role do you think technology plays in job growth in the United States?

MCCAIN: I have no doubt about it. I was reading a paper the other day. In 1960 the industries that were the top 20 industries in America--I think something like 15 of them have disappeared. No longer anywhere not only in the Fortune 500, but it just literally disappeared through acquisition mergers or they didn't keep up with technology, but I'd also like to mention one other thing about technology. It has made information and knowledge available throughout the world in an incredible fashion and it's unbelievable now the access to information and knowledge that people have all over the world and the places that are the worst off are directly related to those that don't have it.

I went to Google one time and, if you go into their main lobby, there's a huge globe and it rotates slowly and there are little beams of light that come out of it and these are people that are Googling at certain times of the day and night and it's pretty impressive when you see, as the globe turns, until Africa comes up. Then it's black and there's just no information. So information obviously is power and knowledge.

Look at this product. Compared to the one that they built, as short [of] a time as ten years ago--much less 20 or 30 years ago. It's evolving technology and I just want to get back again to my fundamental point: the most productive and most competitive worker in the world resides in the United States of America and I never concede that a worker any place else in the world isn't the most capable and the most productive and when people do that, it makes me wonder.

Look at the history of America. Where did the internet come from besides Al Gore?(And, by the way, I have great respect for Vice President Gore and I mean that. He's a great person.) But look at where all the latest technological advances have come from in the world. Nine times out of 10: United States of America.

We all know the story of Bill Gates and his friends how start in a garage. We all know the stories that abound in America of the successes that we have achieved, but we also have to reform education, but that's a whole 'nother subject but the information technology that's available in the world today is one of the greatest advances in the history of civilization. There are down sides to it.

The terrorists are able to use this as recruitment tool and motivation and other bad things. Internet child pornography is a plague that we have to stop. We have to stop and it has also helped with other evils such as human sex trafficking and others, but, overall, it's been probably the greatest change in the history of the world or certainly ranks up there with the printing press and other advances that have been made.

Dennis Hayes defends his belief that all views, no matter how offensive or irrational, should be allowed expression in academic settings. Hayes claims that only complete freedom of speech can create a complete freedom of thought.

-----

You Can't Say That with Dennis Hayes, co-founder of Academics for Academic Freedom.

The first of a two part series exploring academic freedom - with Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

Dr Dennis Hayes is based at the Urban Learning Foundation in East London, where he is researching and developing innovative approaches to further education teacher training. He is the joint president of the University and College Union (UCU), the largest tertiary-education union in the world, and the national co-ordinator of the Institute of Ideas' Education Forum. He also writes a 'Backchat' column for 'FE Focus' in The Times Educational Supplement.

He is the author of many other best-selling books including: Defending Higher Education: the Crisis of Confidence in the Academy (2005), The Routledge Falmer Guide to Key Debates in Education (2004), Teaching and Training in Post-Compulsory Education (2003), Working in Post-Compulsory Education (2003), and The McDonaldization of Higher Education (2002). Forthcoming publications include The Dangerous Rise of Therapeutic Education (2007, co-authored with Kathryn Ecclestone) and A Lecturer's Guide to Further Education (co-editor, 2007).

Dr Hayes is currently the Head of the Centre for Professional Learning (CPL) at Canterbury Christ Church University, and previous to that, head of the Department of Post-Compulsory Education. A trained philosopher, he has taught in secondary and special schools as well as in further and higher education.

Dr Dennis Hayes is one of the founders of Academics for Academic Freedom. He is currently researching the state of academic freedom in new (post-1992) and old universities.

Mexican and US officials are concerned about the growing number of children who enter the United States with no immigration documents. About 8,000 immigrant minors are caught trying to cross the US-Mexico border on their own each year. Franc Contreras went to the northern border town of Reynosa to find out what becomes of these deported children.
