Chinese consumers use three billion plastic bags every day, but not for much longer.

A government ban on plastic bags has come into force, part of China's efforts to improve its green image ahead of the Olympic Games.

But as Gerald Tan reports, the environmental benefits come with a social cost.

Some of the most inspired and provocative thinkers, writers, artists, business people, teachers and other leaders drawn from myriad fields and from across the country and around the world all gathered in a single place - to teach, speak, lead, question, and answer at the 2006 Aspen Ideas Festival. Throughout the week, they all interacted with an audience of thoughtful people who stepped back from their day-to-day routines to delve deeply into a world of ideas, thought, and discussion.

James Fallows is The Atlantic Monthly's National Correspondent, and has worked for the magazine for more than twenty years. His previous books include Breaking the news: How the Media Undermine American Democracy, Looking at the Sun, More Like Us and National Defense, which won the American Book Award for non-fiction. His article about the consequences of victory in Iraq, The Fifty First State?, won the 2003 National Magazine Award.

Mr. Fallows has been an editor for the Washington Monthly and Texas Monthly magazines, and a columnist for the Industry Standard. He writes frequently for Slate and the New York Review of Books and is chairman of the board of the New America Foundation. He has worked on a software-design team at Microsoft and as chief speechwriter for President Jimmy Carter. He and his wife live in Washington DC.

The author of 14 books, 10 of them on China, Orville Schell has been the Dean of the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley for the past decade and a frequent contributor to such publications as The New York Review of Books, Time, Foreign Affairs, Wired, The New Yorker and Harper’s Magazine.

Born in New York, Schell is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Harvard University in Far Eastern History, and was an exchange student at National Taiwan University, in the 1960s. He did graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley, in Chinese History, worked for the Ford Foundation in Indonesia, and covered the war in Indochina as a journalist, writing for such magazines as The Atlantic Monthly and The New Republic.

Author and former head of the California EPA Terry Tamminen describes impacts individuals can have on reducing oil consumption.

-----

Terry Tamminen on "Lives Per Gallon: The True Cost of Our Oil Addiction."

A special advisor to Governor Schwarzenegger, former head of the California EPA, and co-founder of The Riverkeeper Alliance with Robert F. Kennedy, Jr, Terry Tamminen explores the price we pay for each fill up at the pump: the health care costs, government subsidies, economic costs, and environmental devastation, plus the wars and backhanded dealings all to keep our supplies pumping. Tamminen points out that we've made a deal with the devil to stay supplied - but it's time for that to stop, just as our oil reserves will in the next thirty to fifty years. Using tobacco-style litigation against oil and auto industries, Tamminen proposes to use the legal proceeds to help pay for the switch to hydrogen fuel cell energy within a decade, just as California efforts to do just that are beginning - Cody's Books

In the summer of 2003, Terry Tamminen helped Arnold Schwarzenegger win the historic recall election and become Governor of California. He became Secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency in November 2003 and was promoted to Cabinet Secretary, Chief Policy Advisor to the Governor, in December 2004.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai speaks on the relationship between scarce natural resources and global conflict.

-----

Wangari Maathai on "Unbowed: A Memoir"

Wangari Maathai, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004, is the founder of the Green Belt Movement in her home country of Kenya, an environmental group that has restored indigenous forests and assisted rural women by paying them to plant trees in their communities. Since 1977, it has planted more than 30 million trees in Kenya and has been replicated in dozens of other African countries. Maathai is currently Kenya's Deputy Minister for the Environment and Natural Resources and a Member of Parliament.

In her new book, "Unbowed," she shares the story of her life: her message of hope and self-sufficiency despite her struggles, both personal and political, in the changing landscape of Kenya. She has dedicated her life to empowering others, especially women. As the extent of Maathai's popular influence became clear, she was continually hounded, beaten, and jailed. She persisted and eventually prevailed; her Green Belt Movement has planted tens of millions of trees, and in 2002, multiparty democracy and free, fair elections returned to Kenya. - Codys Books
