TRANSCRIPT:
MIKE HUCKABEE: I think Im one of the few Republicans who actually openly talked about and spoke about our responsibility to our environment. I think we do have a responsibility to our environment, to take care of this earth. And for me its not just an issue about environment its an issue of good responsibility. Its even a spiritual issue for me which I unapolagetically say. This is not my world, I dont own this planet, I just get to be a guest here and as I would want to be a guest in your home . . . I would not want to come and abuse what you own if you invited me to use it, I would feel free to use your home but I wouldnt feel free to abuse it, I wouldnt feel free to leave it in worse shape than I found it.

Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope and SmartPower President Brian Keane argue that living in an environmentally friendly can be economically beneficial. This excerpt is taken from a panel discussion entitled "Environmentalism: What's Next?" recorded at the 2008 Democratic National Convention, in collaboration with the New Republic.

-----

Panelists Brian F. Keane, Ted Nordhaus, Ben Nelson, and Carl Pope describe their efforts to make make "going green" easier, faster, and cheaper. They argue that the government shouldn't make fossil fuels more expensive, but rather they should invest in making alternative sources cheaper and marketing them to consumers.

Carl Pope is the Executive Director of the Sierra Club, an American environmental organization founded by conservationist pioneer John Muir in 1892. Pope was appointed to his position as Executive Director in 1992, the club's centennial.

Brian F. Keane is President of SmartPower, a nationwide non-profit marketing organization dedicated to promoting clean, renewable energy and energy efficiency. Hailed as the "Got Milk" campaign for wind, solar and waterpower, SmartPower's award winning marketing campaign has been credited with creating hundreds of GWh of clean, renewable energy across the nation.

AlterNet has this worthwhile item (via Think Progress) about conservative talkback radio (and CNN Headline News Stellar Season programme) host Glenn Beck's latest misadventures in warped patriotism:

In April, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) promised that the Democratic National Convention this week will be the "greenest, most sustainable" convention in history. The Democrats greening efforts include the use of biodegradable balloons and signage, an army of volunteers for recycling, and a calculation of the convention's carbon footprint.

Responding to the Democrats' efforts, conservative global warming denier Glenn Beck is mockingly calling on his listeners to participate in a "carbon ONset program" aimed at counteracting progressive efforts to offset the environmental impact of the convention. On his website, Beck is encouraging Americans to "use more energy for mother nature":

What can you to help? Take part in our carbon ONset program. We are asking you to make just a few small sacrifices to completely wipe out any potential energy savings the Democrats claim credit for. (By ‘energy savings', we mean buying their way out of the energy they'll use by flying in tens of thousands of people to a city so they can announce Barack Obama as their candidate. Seems like most people already knew that, but I digress).

Sign up for our carbon ONset program. Use more energy for mother nature. Do it for the earth (or more accurately, the people living on it.)

Beck posted a survey on his website where listeners can say what they'll do to "use more energy." On his radio show today, he also offered suggestions for how his listeners can help "raise 70 million pounds of carbon." Beck repeatedly kept claiming it needed to be done "for the children":

What I'm just, I'm asking you to participate because it's for the children. You go to the website. Now, how many, how many extra miles can you pledge? Can you drive five extra miles a day? Can you take the long way home, the long way to work? Can you just warm up your car? I know it's August. Can you cool down your car? Can you get up like you do in the winter and just start your car?

Which is enough to wonder if Glenn Beck is secretly in the pay of the so-called "Wise Use Movement" if he's advancing "patriotic" waste of energy as above noted. Let alone failing to disclose any connexions he has with "Wise Use" organisations and their "real" paymasters in the energy industry, especially where "cash-for-comments" arrangements are in play.

========================

Reminder: Readers (and online shoppers) always wanted @ The Exaggerator

(WALL·E - animation - 97 min - directed by Andrew Stanton - starring [voices of] Ben Burtt, Elissa Knight, Jeff Garlin, Sigourney Weaver, Fred Willard)

What are the odds that a largely dialogue-free CGI animated love story between two barely verbal robots set in a futuristic environmental/consumerist nightmare could be the best movie of the year? When that movie is WALL·E and is made by the homerun machine known as Pixar, anything is possible. And WALL·E is definitely my favorite movie of the year thus far, as well as a powerful (and funny and exciting and adorable) cautionary tale about human excess and environmental stewardship.

Full disclosure: I own some Disney stock (it used to be Pixar stock before they got reacquired by Disney). But even if I didn't, it wouldn't have stopped me from seeing WALL·E twice in a week — and I even paid both times!

WALL·E, the film's title character, is a robotic trash compactor — his name is an acronym for Waste Allocation Load Lifter·Earth-Class. He is essentially a box with arms on tractor treads whose faceless head, while amazingly emotive, is little more than binoculars on a stick. Alone for the past 700 years, WALL·E has been dutifully fulfilling his directive: compacting trash into cubes and stacking them in piles. But WALL·E doesn't work on some average trash heap — in this future, the entire earth has become an enormous abandoned dump, where spires of garbage reach higher than the tallest skyscrapers into a smoggy yellow sky scoured by fierce dust storms. Through a combination of humanity's rampant consumer culture and a conglomerate called Buy N Large willing to feed it, life on earth has become unsustainable, forcing all humans to abandon the planet on giant interstellar cruiseliners until the mess can be cleaned up.
