(June 12, 2008) To ban or not to ban, that is the issue in Turkey. The pro-Islamic government tried to overturn a ban on women wearing headscarves in the universities. But the Supreme Court says no, lifting the ban would violate Turkey's strict constitution that separates church and state. For violating the constitution the ruling party could be banned from politics - a controversial move as the
party has been elected twice by the people.

The U.S. claims that North Korea is helping Syria build a nuclear reactor. The Syrians claim that the Israeli Prime Minster has made an offer to withdraw from the Golan Heights. Is there truth in any of these reports? And why would Assad make overtures for peace?

Inside Turkey, there's widespread support for the military action against the PKK. The only major political party to oppose it is the Democratic Society Party, or DTP, whose constituency is almost entirely Kurdish.

But now Turkey wants to ban the DTP, prompting warnings about the state of democracy in the country, and what might happen if Kurdish political representation is censored.

Turkey's brief invasion of Kurdish Iraq was reported in-depth by Turkish and
Kurdish TV. The rest of the world's media was equally interested in how an
American visitor - Secretary of State Condi Rice - reacted to the incursion.
Reports claimed that the U.S. helped the Turks in their bombing campaign.
But Secretary Rice managed to sidestep the question.
