The poll findings also suggest that Africans are not connecting the Bush's administration initiatives on the continent to John McCain, the Republican candidate. </p> <p>However, Africans' responses as to whether the outcome of the US election actually makes a difference suggest that regardless of who the next president is, they do not think it will impact them.</p> <p>Europeans overwhelmingly said that the outcome of the US presidential election is relevant to their country. And without a doubt the candidates know the importance of the continent. This program was recorded on July 15, 2008.</p> <p>Barack Hussein Obama (born August 4, 1961), is the junior United States Senator from Illinois. According to the U.S. Senate Historical Office, he is the fifth African American Senator in U.S. history and the only African American currently serving in the U.S. Senate. He is a candidate for the Democratic Party's 2008 presidential nomination.</p> <p>He was elected to the Illinois Senate in 1996. Four years later, he made an unsuccessful run for the U.S. House of Representatives. Obama won reelection to the state senate in 2002, running unopposed. As early as 2002, he was a critic of the proposed Iraq War, declaring in a television interview that he would have voted against the Iraq Resolution. In 2004, he ran for an open seat in the U.S. Senate. Midway through the campaign, Obama delivered the keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention and became a nationally known political figure. He was assistant professor of mass communication at the University of Mainz and the University of Missouri-Columbia, and visiting professor at the University of Oklahoma. His research focuses on cross-national studies of news journalism and political communication. He has published five books including Comparing Political Communication: Theories, Cases, and Challenges and sixty book chapters and journal articles. Esser is on the editorial boards of Journalism and The International Journal of Press/Politics, and serves as Vice Chair of the Journalism Division of the International Communication Association (ICA).</p> <p>In Zurich he is co-director of the NCCR Democracy, a National Center of Competence in Research funded by the Swiss Science Foundation, to study the impact of globalization and mediatization on Western democracies. A current project compares election campaign coverage in nine countries (U.S., Mexico, Spain, Italy, Britain, France, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland) and aims at identifying the underlying differences between political news cultures.
