As if the economy isn't bad enough, now Bush is going to screw America again. Bush and his administration is on task to ruin America even more. The President wants to renegotiate the Columbian Fair Trade Agreement. A country that has assassinated their workers for speaking up. Over 2000 dead, 11 this year alone.
This is NOT what America wants. Tell congress NO NO NO No CAFTA and NO NAFTA

Jackson, OH 08/06/08

TRANSCRIPT:
INTERVIEWER: And where are you from?

JANELLE: Jackson.

INTERVIEWER: So what is your opinion of John McCain?

JANELLE: Don't like him. Don't believe in anything he stands for.

INTERVIEWER: What do you think about his visit today here in Jackson?

JANELLE: Didn't care.

INTERVIEWER: Did people know that he was coming here?

JANELLE: I heard it this morning when I came into work. Other than that, I don't know if anybody said anything else about it.
INTERVIEWER: Did you have any opinion that it's a closed event, not open to the pubic?

JANELLE: Um, typical.

INTERVIEWER: Could you tell me what you know about Merillat, the place he's visiting?

JANELLE: I just know they went through and started laying off a lot. I have a relative that laid off that worked every year

INTERVIEWER: And what about the plant that's next door- Meridian?

JANELLE: All I know about that is they closed the doors, wouldn't let the employees back in, and they went on strike forever, tried to get their jobs back.

INTERVIEWER: And when was that?

JANELLE: 2006 as far as I know.

Environmental researcher and activist Vandana Shiva points out that as India has taken on greater production of global goods, it has also taken on a proportionate amount of global pollution.

-----

Since the 1980s, Shiva has championed the anti-globalization movement and is one of the leaders of the International Forum on Globalization. Her research and resultant advocacy explores the applicability of traditional Vedic knowledge and ecology to alleviate poverty in developing countries.

She is the founder and director of the Research Foundation for Science, Technology, and Ecology, an organization whose research has validated the ecological value of traditional farming and whose efforts have been instrumental in fighting destructive building projects in India.

Shiva has also been active in repositioning women in the debate on development, for which she received the Right Livelihood Award, also known as the "Alternative Nobel Peace Prize."

Shiva has authored over 300 papers in leading scientific and technical journals and books include Biopiracy, Stolen Harvest, Monocultures of the Mind, and Water Wars. - City Arts and Lectures

Born in India in 1952, Vandana Shiva is a world-renowned environmental leader and thinker. Director of the Research Foundation on Science, Technology, and Ecology, she is the author of many books, including Water Wars: Pollution, Profits, and Privatization (South End Press, 2001), Biopiracy: The Plunder of Nature and Knowledge (South End Press, 1997), Monocultures of the Mind (Zed, 1993), The Violence of the Green Revolution (Zed, 1992), and Staying Alive (St. Martin's Press, 1989).

Shiva is a leader in the International Forum on Globalization, along with Ralph Nader and Jeremy Rifkin. She addressed the World Trade Organization summit in Seattle, 1999, as well as the recent World Economic Forum in Melbourne, 2000. In 1993, Shiva won the Alternative Nobel Peace Prize (the Right Livelihood Award). The founder of Navdanya ("nine seeds"), a movement promoting diversity and use of native seeds, she also set up the Research Foundation for Science, Technology, and Ecology in her mother's cowshed in 1997. Its studies have validated the ecological value of traditional farming and been instrumental in fighting destructive development projects in India .

Environmental Defense Fund President Fred Krupp discusses how the U.S. and other developed nations can influence the environmental impacts of China and India's rapid growth.

-----

Fred Krupp discusses his new book Earth: The Sequel - The Race to Reinvent Energy and Stop Global Warming.

The Environmental Defense Fund helped reduce acid rain in the 1990s by using market forces, and last year it played a role in the buyout of Texas utility TXU that reduced the number of planned coal-fired power plants. The advocacy group's president, Fred Krupp, believes business-friendly approaches such as carbon cap-and-trade systems are the best way to fight global warning.

His new book, Earth: The Sequel, highlights the entrepreneurs, scientists, and even a former bus driver on the Trans-Alaska pipeline, who are betting on the free market to create new wealth and build a post-carbon economy - The Commonwealth Club of California

Fred Krupp is the Executive Director of Environmental Defense, a national environmental organization that links science, economics and law to create innovative, equitable and cost effective solutions to the most critical environmental problems.

Krupp leads Environmental Defense’'s teams of scientists, attorneys, engineers, and economists in developing solution-oriented strategies to tackle a wide range of U.S. and international environmental problems including global warming; protection of endangered wildlife and ecosystems; restoration of inland, coastal and ocean habitats; elimination of environmental threats to human health; the protection of tropical rainforests.

Since Krupp joined Environmental Defense in 1984, its annual budget has increased from $3 million to more than $35 million, full-time staff has more than quadrupled from 50 to over 200, membership has expanded from 40,000 to more than 300,000, and new regional offices opened in North Carolina and Texas.

Futurist author Paul Saffo predicts a gradual shift to a robot-based economy for the Japan and the United States, and discusses possible impacts for the remaining human workforce.

-----

Paul Saffo discusses Embracing Uncertainty: Connecting Policy to Long-Range Forecasting.

A movie star as governor? No way! Planes hitting skyscrapers? The stuff of horror films! Forecasters struggle to anticipate an ever-stranger geopolitical reality. In this moment of unprecedented uncertainty and change, says Saffo, it is tempting to conclude that forecasting is as dangerous as it is futile.

In fact, connecting short-term policy to long-range forecasting is surprisingly easy - and absolutely crucial to meeting the challenges before us. All it takes is a simple shift in perspective and a few common-sense heuristics.

Saffo is a legendary technology forecaster, with over two decades of experience exploring long-term technological change and its impact on business and society - The Commonwealth Club of California

Paul Saffo is a forecaster and strategist with over two decades experience exploring long-term technological change and its practical impact on business and society. Paul is Chairman of the Samsung Science Board, and serves on a variety of other boards and advisory panels, including the Stanford Advisory Council on Science, Technology and Society, and the Long Now Foundation, as well as the boards of several public and pre-public companies located the United States and abroad. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences and has served as an advisor and Forum Fellow to the World Economic Forum, which in the late 1990s named Paul one of its "100 Global Leaders For Tomorrow."

Paul currently serves on the Board of the Institute for the Future and the Long Now Foundation. He is also the Chairman of Samsung Science Advisory Board.
