Journalist Richard Ackland argues that many religious leaders encourage people to blindly follow their beliefs, which can lead to ignorant, and even dangerous decisions.

-----

While the world's religions have inspired stunning acts of creation, they also have been implicated in some of the darkest deeds in human history.

If God cannot be blamed for such moments of evil, His priests and prophets at least have a case to answer.

So what might they say? That religion is unfairly blamed -- and that we should look to other factors? Admit that there are problems but argue that on balance the good outweighs the bad? That there is no alternative; that people need religion like they need air? - Intelligence Squared

Richard Ackland is a prominent columnist for The Sydney Morning Herald writing on legal and ethical issues. He is founder of Law Press of Australia, whose publications include The Justinian and The Gazette of Law and Journalism. Ackland has been a staunch advocate of free speech and was co-winner of the prestigious Gold Walkley for Journalism in 1999 following work as writer and presenter of the ABC's Media Watch program. Ackland has also presented ABC Radio National's breakfast program, covering a range of issues and controversies. In 2000 he was awarded the Voltaire Prize for Free Speech.

Suzanne Rutland, Chair of the Department of Hebrew, Biblical & Jewish Studies at the University of Sydney, argues that human beings need to belong to groups that provide altruistic and loving relationships and beliefs in higher principles - elements that, in Rutland's view, secular society alone often does not provide.

-----

While the world's religions have inspired stunning acts of creation, they also have been implicated in some of the darkest deeds in human history.

Suzanne Rutland is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Hebrew, Biblical & Jewish Studies at the University of Sydney and the main lecturer in the program of Jewish Civilization, Thought and Cultures. She has published widely on Australian Jewish history, edits the Sydney edition of the AJHS Journal, as well as writing on issues relating to the Shoah and Israel. Her latest books are The Jews in Australia and Triumph of the Jewish Spirit: Forty Years of the Jewish Communal Appeal. In January 2008 she received the Medal of the Order of Australia from the Australian Government for services to Higher Jewish Education and interfaith dialogue.

October 1, 2008 Over 20,000 Black Water "contractors" or mercenaries, stand by to back up the 1st brigade 3rd infantry, who now server under NorthComm. These two things clearly violate rights handed down to us over 130 years ago, by the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878. The New World Order has begun. Is this the time to stand up and fill yourself with hatred, fear and anger? NO! now more then ever you have to live a life filled with love, let the negative events of today prove to you that you HAVE to fight against these things, not with fear, and hatred, but with love, faith hope, and understanding. Make no mistake, there is a storm coming, but if we can all stand together, and forget about all the things that we've been led to believe that separate us, we CAN SURVIVE. If we STAND TOGETHER as ONE, we can change the world, WE HAVE TO! All of our lives depend on it.

But then he sent us a letter, inviting us to his home, we spent four and half hours in his family room with he and Anne. There was no question in my mind that this man has had the experience since early childhood to run this nation. We got a monster on our hands, it's called the U.S. government with its debt to China. I'm convinced, and I hope you are here tonight as much as I am, as much as I'm giving up of my time as a Christian minister, understanding fully as an evangelical Christian that this man has those values and belief systems that will absolutely give this nation the direction that it needs. God bless you."

Dr. C. Welton Gaddy, president of The Interfaith Alliance, argues for greater understanding of the separation between religion and American government.

-----

Rev. Dr. Welton Gaddy is the leader of two national nonpartisan grassroots and educational organizations, The Interfaith Alliance and The Interfaith Alliance Foundation, and serves as the pastor for preaching and worship at Northminster (Baptist) Church in Monroe, Louisiana.

Gaddy is host of "State of Belief," a weekly radio show produced by The Interfaith Alliance (carried on AirAmerica), which is based on the proposition that religion has a positive and healing role to play in the life of the nation.

Founded in 1994, The Interfaith Alliance (TIA) has grown into a national grassroots organization of 150,000+ individuals of faith and goodwill drawn from more than seventy-five different religious traditions or beliefs with a cyber-network of 10,000 activists and seventy-five local activist groups. Dedicated to promoting mutual respect, cooperation, and civility, TIA strives to promote religion as a positive and healing force in the life of the nation.

In addition to authoring over twenty books, Dr. Gaddy provides regular commentary to the national media on issues relating to religion and politics. His appearances include CNN Presents: The Fight Over Faith; PBS's NOW with Bill Moyers; PBS Frontline's The Jesus Factor; PBS's The Newshour with Jim Lehrer; NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw; CBS Evening News with Dan Rather; ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings; numerous National Public Radio stations including KQED's Forum in San Francisco and KCRW's The Politics of Culture in Los Angeles; CNBC's Capital Report; CNN's The World Today with Wolf Blitzer; CNN's Inside Politics with Judy Woodruff; PBS's Religion and Ethics Newsweekly; CBS's Freedom to Pray; C-SPAN's Washington Journal; NBC's Dateline.
-------------------------

BOK Center opens with a multifaith blessing
http://tinyurl.com/sambok2

Music rocked the BOK Center downtown Sunday afternoon as thousands gathered for a multifaith celebration and blessing of the new building.

Fired by a 450-voice choir from about 85 houses of worship, the crowd often rose to its feet in applause and joined in the singing.

Recording artist Sam Harris, a native of the Tulsa area, said he was thrilled to be at the celebration, which was part of the grand opening for the arena.

"What a blessing it is to be in this place," he said while catching his breath after belting out, "Change Is on the Way," from his album "Free."

Harris was backed by the New Dimensions Chorale.

He asked the audience to join him in an old favorite children's worship song with the lyrics: "This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine."

He urged the audience to "seek goodness everywhere, and wherever it is found, let it be free and unashamed."

Master of ceremonies John Erling quipped: "This is the day that the taxpayers have made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it."

He thanked Rick Fortner, music director at All Souls Unitarian Church, for providing the spark years ago that resulted in the celebration, and for directing the community choir.

Near the end of the celebration, 11 faith leaders representing the major religions of the world offered prayers of blessing for the new facility.

Sitting side-by-side on the podium were spiritual leaders who were Methodist, Charismatic, Roman Catholic, Mormon, Greek Orthodox, Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, Unitarian, Buddhist and African Methodist Episcopal.

"We decided to call it a multifaith event, rather than an interfaith event, which carries some connotations," said Jim Mishler, executive director of Tulsa Metropolitan Ministry, who helped plan the celebration.

"We asked faith leaders to pray in their own tradition."

As a result, several leaders used the term "in Jesus' name," a phrase generally frowned upon at interfaith events.

Another prayed to Allah in Arabic, and another prayed in Sanskrit. Bishop Edward J. Slattery, of the Catholic Diocese of Tulsa, prayed in Spanish.

English translations of the foreign language prayers were displayed on the scoreboard as the leaders prayed.

A common theme running through the prayers was that the arena would be a blessing to the Tulsa community.

Erling said the participation of such diverse faith leaders at one event "has probably never been done in our city to this degree."

Mayor Kathy Taylor and BOK Center General Manager John Bolton spoke briefly.

As the crowd streamed out of the arena, Jeramy Auld said of the celebration, "I thought it was great."

"We're taxpayers," his wife Libby Auld said. "We thought it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be here."
