JUST TELLING OUR KIDS TO "DON'T DO IT" DOES NOT WORK! Guess what folks, teaching abstinence-only to young adolescent teens fails in all the studies except the ones conducted by the abstinence-only advocates. Isn't that a shocker? Well, to anyone with a few brain cells, that was a given. From the very beginning, when Bush and his followers rejoiced and couldn't wait to hit us over the head with their abstinence-ONLY asinine program. Of course, we should teach our teenage children good judgement, if that is at all possible when it comes to the powerful instinctual urges belonging to all life, the drive to BEGET. Try telling a teeny bobber about love and responsibility. They'll look at you, the same way you look at a dog chasing its tail, bewilderment of such a stupidity lag. But, for most parents, the teen "eye roll" just slides off their back, down to the floor where it can be easily stepped on. But all sarcasm aside, teaching this program alone is not just block-headed, its outrageously dangerous. By not equipping our young with knowledge on self preservation, we neglect the most basic fact of life, the instinctive teachings of fundamental survival techniques. Go and watch some wild life with their young and you will see such training. Birds do it, Bees do it, even Monkeys in the trees do it. Let's do it, lets teach our young important "no brainer" essentials, so they can make informed decisions to help preserve our species. FOR PITY'S SAKE! LET'S DO IT! thinkingblue

Some of you, upon reading the previous few posts, asked me what authors I felt were responsible and on-target regarding issues of race, ethnicity and gender in their fantasy writings for children.

At the top of my list would have to be the incomparable Ursula K. Le Guin. I spent countless hours as a teen reading her work, and often revisit it as a grownup now. Le Guin uses the fantasy genre to tell stories that make important points about humanity in general. She blends anthropology and sociology into her fiction about "other" worlds or creatures, and in the process helps us to think critically about our own society, and our role in it, and how we treat one another.

Mr. Fooster Traveling on a Whim is a visual novel sparingly written and illuminated with 52 pen-and-ink illustrations. Mr. Fooster seems like your average fellow, albeit one who travels with an old bottle of bubble soap. One Tuesday morning, however, he takes us into a rich and vivid world unlike any we've seen before. As he heads out the door, Mr. Fooster's boundless curiosity leads him to reflect on questions such as How do mandarin oranges come in perfect little segments without any mechanical engineering? How come we never see baby pigeons? And Who figured out how to eat artichokes? Mr. Fooster shows us that our assumptions are best when challenged.

This book represents an unusual collaboration between Tom Corwin—who is a musician, producer and author, and Craig Frazier—who is a designer, illustrator and author. Tom will read from the book accompanied by a visual and live musical presentation. Craig will reveal his developmental sketches and process. Together they will describe their own 'creative boomerang' that gave Mr. Fooster wings.

This event took place on August 6, 2008, as a part of the Authors@Google series.

For the first three chapters of the book on line, go to: www.mrfooster.com

Neal Stephenson delivered a talk entitled The Fork: Science Fiction versus Mundane Culture at Gresham College.

Four professors discuss the origins of science fiction, its overlap with other genres and its developments over more than a century.

Neal Stephenson is the best-selling author of such novels as Snow Crash, The Diamond Age, Cryptonomicon, and The Baroque Cycle.
