Felony Disenfranchisement and the Right to Vote: Democracy Now!'s Mike Kimber Casts a Ballot for the First Time

As tens of millions head to the polls today, we take a look at the issue of felony disenfranchisement, the practice by state governments of barring people convicted of a felony from voting, even after they have served their time. What many don’t realize is that while a few states have permanent felony disenfranchisement laws, many allow those with a felony record to eventually rejoin the voter rolls. Democracy Now!’s Mike Kimber discusses his experience casting a ballot for the first time in his life after realizing he was allowed to vote in New York. We also speak with Myrna Pérez of the Brennan Center for Justice. [includes rush transcript]

A year ago Senator Ted Stevens was one of the deciding votes for the DREAM Act, legislation that would alleviate the suffering of undocumented immigrant youth who had committed no crimes and had at least a 2-year post-secondary education. Stevens voted against the bill, dashing the hopes of over a million undocumented youth in America.
Call it karma or just coincidence, but the 84-year old Ted Stevens--the longest serving Republican in the Senate--was found guilty of seven felony counts earlier in the Week.

Senator Stevens refuses to back down despite calls from both Barack Obama and John McCain. He still considers himself above the law, gets to keep his pension and vote for himself, and will become the first convicted felon to serve in the Senate if re-elected. After all, a convicted felon can serve in the Senate. But if you are brought to this country illegally at the age of 2, you can't even go to college in some cases despite the fact that you have committed no crime and have outstanding academic records. Sounds fair to me.

The US Supreme Court has blocked attempts by the Republican Party to challenge the right of thousands of new voters in the battleground state of Ohio.

Voter registration has been an increasingly sensitive issue between Republicans and Democrats.

There is another lesser known group being disenfranchised in three other states - those convicted of serious crimes. And that accounts for nearly five and a half million potential voters.

Al Jazeera's Mike Kirsh reports.

The states of Kentucky and Virginia currently do not allow felons to cast ballots. That accounts for nearly seven per cent of voting-age citizens.

And with Virginia considered a battleground state in this election, the issue has become a hot topic.

Al Jazeera's Avi Lewis travelled to Richmond, Virginia to speak with people on both sides of the divide.

Secretaries of State Debra Bowen of California and Robin Carnahan of Missouri on Voting Issues in a Year of Soaring Turnout
We speak to the top election officials from two states—California Secretary of State Debra Bowen and Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan—about some of the contentious issues facing the American electorate ahead of the November presidential election. Earlier this week, the Supreme Court upheld an Indiana law requiring voters to show photo identification. Many Democrats and civil rights groups have opposed the law, saying it is a thinly veiled effort to suppress elderly, poor and minority voters, those most likely to lack proper ID and who tend to vote for Democrats.
