The brilliant comedian and satirist George Carlin died yesterday, and one of the bits they ran for his obit. paralleled the line in this song about the Christians, Hindus, Muslims, and Jews. Like minds...

"They Talk to God" is the song I sang to Randall Terry and his Operation Rescue acolytes on the LAPD bus for those arrested during the onslaught against Los Angeles abortion clinics. I was the only Pro-Choice activist arrested that day (wrongfully arrested, I might add), and my song shut down the "party" on the bus. A more complete version of that day is available in my book, "Tim McMullen: Aged Fifty Years...A Life in Song."

"The Voice for Choice" and "They Talk to God" were performed at a major Pro-Choice rally in Los Angeles in 1989.
The Greatest Threat to Democracy is Hypocrisy! Seek Truth! Speak Truth!
Tim McMullen

"They Talk To God"

They talk to God,
And He tells them kill strangers
They talk to God,
He says women serve men.
They talk to God,
Then point out the dangers
Of doing what you know is right
And not following them.

They talk to God,
Then invent inquisitions.
They talk to God,
Then burn women at the stake.
They talk to God,
Then offer conditions
No self-respecting, right-thinking
Fair-minded human could make.

They talk to God (in Ireland),
Then Protestants kill Catholics (& vice-versa);
They talk to God (in Europe),
Then Christians kill Jews;
They talk to God (in Israel),
Then Jews kill the Muslims;
And Muslims and Hindus and Christians
Kill anyone any old leader might choose.

Ah, but they talk to God,
Then treat women as children.
They talk to God,
Then treat women like slaves.
They talk to God,
Then close down health clinics
'Cause God told them,
"Women are cursed
And deserve early graves."

They talk to God
(like George Bush or Sad I'm Insane),
And He tells them kill strangers.
They talk to God (like Jerry Falwell),
He says women serve men.
They talk to God (like Operation Rescue),
Then point out the dangers
Of doing what you know is right
And not following them...

...Of doing what you know is right
And not following them...
But you've got to do what you know is right
And not follow them!

Complete video at: fora.tv

Former White House Press Secretary Dee Dee Myers argues that American women in general are too reluctant to take credit for professional achievements.

-----

Why Women Should Run the World with Dee Dee Myers.

Hear Myers' fresh take on the achievements that women have made in all aspects of public life. At the age of 31, Myers was appointed as White House press secretary under Clinton. Myers highlights the difficulties women faced throughout history as well as their collective battle to achieve a presence in areas once denied to them - The Commonwealth Club of California

Dee Dee Myers is the first woman and youngest person ever to serve as White House Press Secretary. During the first years of the Clinton Administration, Ms. Myers explained the actions of the new president to a vigilant press corps and to the nation. She earned the respect of both with her sharp political instincts, sense of humor and ability to explain complex subjects in straightforward language. Since leaving the white house, Ms. Myers has worked as a political analyst, commentator and writer. She is uniquely qualified to comment on the complex dynamics at work in the relationship between the president and the press.

Ms. Myers is currently a Contributing Editor to Vanity Fair magazine and a frequent political commentator on NBC and MSNBC. After leaving the White House, Ms. Myers was an original consultant to the NBC series, The West Wing, and contributed story lines and technical advice throughout its prizewinning long run. In March of 1999, Gov. Gray Davis appointed Ms. Myers to the California State University Board of Trustees. The Board sets policy for the 23-campus Cal State system, the largest public university in the world.

Dee Dee Myers' book, Why Women should Rule the World (Harper Collins, 2008) considers the question: What would happen if women ruled the world? Everything could change, according to former White House press secretary Dee Dee Myers. Politics would be more collegial. Businesses would be more productive. And communities would be healthier. Empowering women would make the world a better place - not because women are the same as men, but precisely because they are different. Blending memoir, social history, and a call to action, Dee Dee Myers challenges us to imagine a not-too-distant future in which increasing numbers of women reach the top ranks of politics, business, science, and academia.

Author and advertising executive Nina DiSesa discusses the balancing act successful businesswomen must play between their home and professional lives.

------

Seducing the Boys Club: Uncensored Tactics from a Woman at the Top with Nina DiSesa.

Nina DiSesa gives a wry reality check on how to get ahead and thrive in the testosterone-driven business arena. A master communicator, ceiling crasher, and one of the most successful women in the corporate world, DiSesa is also a big-time realist who has figured out that S&M - seduction and manipulation - is the secret to winning over (and surpassing) the big guys - The Commonwealth Club of California

Nina DiSesa has worked in the quintessential boys clubs of advertising for almost thirty years. In 1994, she became the first woman EVP, Executive Creative Director for McCann Erickson New York, the flagship office of the largest advertising agency in the world. Under her creative leadership, the New York office enjoyed an unprecedented 5-year growth period adding almost $2.5 billion in billings. In 1998, she was made Chairman as well as Chief Creative Officer of McCann New York. She was the first woman and first creative director to be named chairman in the McCann global network.

In 1999, Nina was chosen by Fortune magazine as one of the "50 Most Powerful Women in American Business." In 2005, she received the Matrix Award, given each year to a select group of women in communication. In 2007, she was inducted into the Hall of Fame for CEBA (Creative Excellence in Business Advertising).

In the wake of Sassy and as an alternative to the more staid reporting of Ms., Bitch was launched in the mid-nineties as a Xerox-and-staple zine covering the landscape of popular culture from a feminist perspective. Both unabashed in its love for the guilty pleasure of consumer culture and deeply thoughtful about the way the pop landscape reflects and impacts women's lives, Bitch grew to be, today, a touchstone of hip, young feminist thought, looking with both wit and irreverence at the way pop culture informs feminism - and vice versa. "BITCHfest" offers an assortment of the most provocative pieces from the past along with new pieces - smart, nuanced, cranky, outrageous, and clear-eyed all. Lisa Jervis is publisher; Andi Zeisler is editorial/creative director. - Cody's Books

Author and "Vagina Monologues" playwright Eve Ensler criticizes the Bush Administration's conduct of the War on Terror.

-----

Eve Ensler talks about "Insecure at Last: Losing It in Our Security-Obsessed World," a provocative look at America's obsession with security in a post-9/11 world.

"Why has all this focus on security made me feel so much more insecure? Nothing is secure. And this is the good news. But only if you are not seeking security as the point of your life." - Eve Ensler

When her stage play "The Vagina Monologues" became a runaway hit and an international sensation, Eve Ensler emerged as a powerful voice and champion for women everywhere. Now the brilliant playwright gives us her first major work written exclusively for the printed page. "Insecure at Last" is a timely and urgent look at our security-obsessed world, the drastic measures taken to keep us safe, and how we can truly experience freedom by letting go of the deceptive notion of vigilant "protection." Ensler draws on personal experiences and candid interviews with burka-clad women in Afghanistan; female prisoners in upstate New York; survivors at the Superdome after Katrina; and anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan-sharing unforgettable snapshots that chronicle a post-9/11 existence in which hyped obsession for safety and security has undermined our humanity. The us-versus-them mentality, Ensler explains, has closed our minds and hardened our compassionate hearts.

Provocative, illuminating, inspiring, and boldly envisioned, "Insecure at Last" challenges us to reconsider what it means to be free, to discover that our strength is not born out of that which protects us. Ensler offers us the opportunity to reevaluate our everyday lives, expose our vulnerability, and, in doing so, experience true freedom and fulfillment. - Books Inc.

Author and Vanity Fair Contributing Editor Leslie Bennetts discusses the origins of her book, "The Feminine Mistake," and examines difficulties faced by women who quit their careers to become stay-at-home mothers.

-----

Leslie Bennetts talks about "The Feminine Mistake: Are We Giving Up Too Much?"

Renowned Vanity Fair journalist Bennetts rekindles the debate over women's life choices with a new book that redefines the work-family question. She offers a persuasive argument that women can - and should - make more than one kind of mark on the world. - Book Passage

Leslie Bennetts has been a contributing editor at Vanity Fair since 1988, writing on subjects that have ranged from movie stars to priest pedophilia, industrial pollution and U.S. anti-terrorism policy.

Her 2005 cover story on Jennifer Aniston was the best-selling issue in the magazine's history to date, and the People magazine cover story about Bennetts' interview with Aniston was the best-selling issue in the history of People.

Prior to joining Vanity Fair, Bennetts spent fifteen years as a newspaper reporter. She started covering so-called "women's issues" at The Philadelphia Bulletin in the early 1970's, and has continued to write about women, marriage, families and parenting ever since.
