<p><p>Firefighters don't like <a href="http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/fire-fighters-call-new-giuliani-ad-disgusting-2007-12-27.html">Rudy's exploitation</a> of 9/11, but I guess he likes it when his poll numbers take a dive: </p><blockquote><p><strong>The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) called former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s decision to use images of the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks in a new ad “disgusting.”</strong><br /><br />The IAFF, now a familiar foe of Giuliani’s, said Thursday that <strong>Giuliani failed to properly equip fire fighters prior to the attacks</strong>, and they again hit the former mayor for what they say were <strong>a series of bad decisions that led to the deaths of many fire fighters</strong>.</p><p>"<strong>Giuliani's new ad continues his pattern of perpetrating a fraud on the American people</strong>,” IAFF president Harold Schaitberger said. </p></blockquote><p>I must say, <a href="http://cliffschecter.bravenewfilms.org/blog/16196-hey-rudy-can-you-hear-them-now">I quite agree</a>.</p><blockquote><p>"<strong>This man had no idea how to properly prepare a city for a terror attack</strong>,” Schaitberger said. “<strong>Now he wants to be put in charge of preparing our entire country? <p><p>What to do when you're Rudy Giuliani, and you know you're responsible for, at the very least, a gross act of negligence that contributed to the untimely deaths of 121 firefighters in the North Tower of the World Trade Center on 9/11? </p><p>Well, you ignore and lie about it for six years, for starters. But then when the firefighters' union and Brave New Films decide to expose your role in this tragedy with fact-based films, you write a love letter worthy of something you might have put together for your second wife while still married to your first wife. Or maybe it was your third wife when still married to your second wife.</p><p>I always get that mixed up.</p><p><a href="http://www.nypost.com/seven/11052007/news/regionalnews/rudy__be_my_heroes_673888.htm">Here is Rudy, on his hands and knees, hoping to stave off an inevitable investigation</a> into his no-bid contract for radios that didn't work and were never field tested, the magical inflation of said contract by a factor of ten, and his ignoring the fact that the original radios, in many cases, DIDN'T WORK from 1994 (when he was sworn in as mayor) until 2001. </p><blockquote><p>November 5, 2007 -- <a href="http://www.nypost.com/news/p/giuliani_rudy/giuliani_rudy.htm">Rudy Giuliani</a> has sent out a letter thanking cops and firefighters for risking their lives - and insisting he would be the president to help prepare them for future terrorist attacks. </p><p>"Firefighters and police officers have been my heroes since I was a little boy. I've had the honor of working alongside them during my career in law enforcement and elected office," he said in a "Dear Friend" note to public-safety officers. </p><p>The letter seeks to counter criticism Giuliani has faced from New York firefighters-union leaders and 9/11 family advocates who accuse the former mayor of doing a poor job of planning for such a disaster. </p></blockquote><p>Isn't that cute. When he was a little boy he idolized firefighters and cops. Like every boy under the age of 12. Most, however, didn't grow up to ignore and imperil their safety.</p><p>Too bad a few nice words don't make the firefighters forget what he did to them:</p><blockquote><p>The Giuliani letter doesn't change anything, said FDNY Deputy Chief James Riches. </p><p>"It's great he's starting to prepare us now. He didn't prepare us in 2001. He ignored all the warnings from the first 1993 attack at the World Trade Center," said Riches, whose firefighter son, James, was killed at Ground Zero. </p></blockquote><p>That just about sums it up.</p></p>

<p>What happens when your country fights two wars that drain about three billion dollars a week with sadly no end in sight? Your country doesn't have money to run and repair itself. Worse, it is almost impossible for your country to improve itself.<br /><br />What happens when your country is run by an administration that denies the existence of climate change and <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/11/01/AR2006110103269.html" title="investigtion of climate change lies">purposefully misinforms</a> its citizens about it? Your country does not make needed adjustments to deal with the <a href="http://www.worldviewofglobalwarming.org/" title="climate change effects">effects of climate change</a>, like weather extremes, floods, hurricanes, drought, and wildfires. So your country won't do things like train more firemen, build more and better firefighting aircraft, or pay to transport more firemen from other parts of the country to help in case of catastrophic wildfires like you saw in southern California. <br /><br />What happens when your country believes that every inch of its ground should be for sale to the richest people? You have houses built far out in wooded areas, stretching the resources of already overextended firefighters who end up protecting property instead of defending firelines. But in the richest country in the world, there's no reason why there shouldn't be enough firemen to do both. If your country reveres firemen, it should strive to create more of them. And it should <a href="http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Fire_Fighter/Salary" title="firefighter salary">pay them better</a>, especially since they risk their lives. </p>

<p><p>Our Make-Believer in Chief loves firefighters. Remember? Right after 9/11, do you recall how he said he <a href="http://www.pbs.org/newshour/vote2004/candidates/can_bush-sept11.html">"could hear</a>" them?</p><p>Well, well, well, can you hear them now, W? Because last night on <a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/10/18/60minutes/main3380176.shtml"><em>60 Minutes</em></a> they were loud and clear. And you know what they were saying? </p><p><strong>Tom Boatner</strong>, who after 30 years on the fire line, is now the <strong>chief of fire operations for the federal government</strong>, said this:<br /> </p><blockquote><p>"We got records going back to 1960 of the acres burned in America. So, that's 47 fire seasons. <strong>Seven of the 10 busiest fire seasons have been since 1999." </strong></p></blockquote><p>Why would that be? Too many matches? Nah. Squirrels and chipmunks becoming arsonists? Absurd! Too much hot air emanating from D.C.? Maybe.</p><p>Tom Swetnam, one of the world's leading fire ecologists:</p><blockquote><p>"As the spring is arriving earlier because of warming conditions, the snow on these high mountain areas is melting and running off. So <strong>the logs and the branches and the tree needles all can dry out more quickly</strong> and have a longer time period to be dry. And so <strong>there's a longer time period and opportunity for fires to start</strong>. [...] <strong>The spring comes earlier, so the fire season is just longer. </strong>[...] The fire season in the last 15 years or so has increased more than two months over the whole Western U.S. <strong>So actually 78 days of average longer fire season in the last 15 years compared to the previous 15 or 20 years."</strong></p></blockquote><p>And what would be the reason for that phenomenon?</p><blockquote><p>Swetnam says that <strong>climate change -- global warming -- has increased temperatures in the West about one degree</strong> and <strong>that has caused four times more fires.</strong> Swetnam and his colleagues published those findings in the journal "Science," and <strong>the world’s leading researchers on climate change have endorsed their conclusions. </strong></p></blockquote><p>No way! One teensy weensy degree can do all that? But W and his buds don't believe in science. Not even one degree of it!</p><p>And global warming? That's just some silly story made up by Al Gore. And who's gonna believe <em>him</em>?</p><p>But <em>you believe in firefighters</em>, don't you, W? </p><blockquote><p>"You know, <strong>there are a lot of people who don't believe in climate change</strong>," <em>[60 Minutes</em> correspondent Scott] Pelley remarks. <br /> <br />"<strong>You won't find them on the fire line in the American West anymore," [firefighter] Tom Boatner says.</strong> <strong>"'Cause we've had climate change beat into us over the last ten or fifteen years.</strong> We know what we’re seeing, and <strong>we're dealing with a period of climate, in terms of temperature and humidity and drought that's different than anything people have seen in our lifetimes." </strong></p></blockquote><p>Maybe he can convince W and his pals to have a little faith in his firefighting heroes. And W, isn't that what you keeps you going? Faith?</p><p>Or is that make-believe, too? </p></p>

<p><a href="http://therealrudy.org/radios">Brave New Films has released a powerful new film today</a> about a subject that has the potential to knock Rudy Giuliani's campaign to its knees. Most of us know that the NY Firefighters are mad as hell at Giuliani, but this films starkly lays out one very serious reason why: the radios.<br /><br />Giuliani came into office in 1994, shortly after the first WTC attack. He knew then that the radios didn't work properly and yet it took him seven years to deal with the problem. And when he finally got around to it, he gave Motorola a sweetheart, no-bid contract for radios that were never tested in advance. When the NYFD got them, they didn't work and they had to be reissued the same radios that had proved inadequate in 1993.<br /><br />That's why, on September 11th, the firefighters didn't hear the warnings to get out of the buildings. The cops heard them. They mostly got out. Their radios could get the right frequency. The firefighters' old radios couldn't.<br /><br />In perhaps the most chilling moment of the film, the audience gasps in horror as Giuliani unctuously testifies before congress that the dead firefighters were heroes for "standing their ground."</p>

<p><p>I could write up a whole post about our new (and I think perhaps best) video released this morning by the crew at Brave New Films. I could, but the great Robert Greenwald already has. </p><p>So I'll block quote him, and simply ask you to watch the video:</p><blockquote><p>Rudy Giuliani is running for office on how he handled 9/11 and here we have <a href="http://therealrudy.org/facts">proof positive</a> that firemen were killed because his administration did not fix the long-standing (since 1993!) problems with the radios.<br /><br />This BNF investigative report calls attention to four key questions about Rudy's handling of the broken radios from firemen's families and experts: </p><ul><li>Why was nothing done to improve NYFD radio performance for seven years after a clear need was demonstrated in the 1993 World Trade Center attack? </li><li>When new radios were finally ordered, why did the city block other companies besides Motorola from bidding on the contract? </li><li>Once Motorola was given the contract, why did its cost jump from $1.4 million to $14 million? </li><li>Why were these new radios never tested?<br /></li></ul><p>These questions should and must be investigated. New York City councilman <a href="http://www.nyccouncil.info/constituent/member_details.cfm?con_id=54">Eric Gioia</a> has the power to begin an investigation. If we can garner enough attention and signers, we have a major opportunity to help launch an investigation. </p></blockquote><p>There you have it. <a href="http://therealrudy.org/radios">Go sign our petition and ensure that an investigation of Rudy's negligence in the years leading up to 9/11 is thoroughly investigated.</a></p></p>

<p>"It's just not possible."<br /><br />That was the sentence we heard over and over from families who had firefighter sons, brothers, husbands and fathers killed on 9/11, from experts on emergency response, and from investigative journalists. It was just not possible that Rudy could so distort what happened on 9/11 and his role on that terrible day.<br /><br />These <a href="http://therealrudy.org/interviews">experts</a>, these grieving and furious family members, were united only by the fact that this story had to be told. Republicans, Independents, and Democrats could agree on just one thing: the cold hard facts about Rudy's terrible handling of 9/11 and the aftermath.<br /><br />And so we went to work. We <a href="http://therealrudy.org/facts">researched</a>, we read, we interviewed. Jason locked himself in a quiet room. Christopher flew across the country at a moment's notice to interview. Lissette went over and over the footage. Leda kept juggling schedules so we could get the film done. Jimmy worked the phones to try and raise some funds.<br /><br />And here it is... <p><p>While that is more time than he has spent with his kids during their entire lives <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/17/us/politics/17giuliani.html?_r=1&amp;oref=slogin">it doesn't quite match the rhetoric</a> about spending as much time there as the workers and firemen did.</p><p>This man is such a pathetic liar. Go find that dust-covered suit and put it back on Rudy. Go downtown. Maybe you can sqeeze another hour of fawning media coverage in. Oh, and while you're at it, why don't you announce another divorce to said media?</p></p>

<p><p>You know the people he left without proper communication devices to die in a crumbling building on 9/11, whose bodies he chose to scoop up like garbage and toss in a land fill.</p><p>You the people who only spent about as much time as he did at Ground Zero, the ones who he didn't think needed protective gear to spend 18 hour days at a radioactive site (while his buddy Bernie Kerik was using the apartment set aside for them to rest for his dalliances with his mistresses).</p><p>Sure Rudy, you care about the firefighters. Like a shark cares about chum.</p></p>

<p>June's Homeland Security report declared the US unprepared for catastrophes. Five years after 9/11 and one year after Katrina, we continue to hit what Dr. Irwin Redlener calls the "snooze alarm": rather than treating these disasters as true wake-up calls, our government has done little to prepare our nation for natural and man-made acts that are all but inevitable. What OHS's report shows is that the government in not prepared to protect its citizens.</p>
<p>Redlener, co-founder of The Children's Health Fund and head of Columbia's National Center for Disaster Preparedness, states that individuals must be their own first responders. <p>The International Association of Firefighters debunks the Legend of udy Giuliani calling the former Mayor personally responsible for the deaths of firefighters on 9/11. And that is merely one of several charges that paint a portrait of one despicable human being. </p>
<p>For example, Rudy called off the search for firefighters after the bank of Novia Scotia recovered $230 million in gold. The gold was recovered after 8 weeks and the next day Rudy stopped the search for firefighters claiming it was too dangerous.</p>
