TRANSCRIPT:
MIKE HUCKABEE: And whether its to make there, a tax code that we can live with, that can let us actually keep some of the money that weve earned. And thats why Im a strong advocate of getting rid of our entire current tax code that is so broken, we can start with that. We say it couldnt even be fixed if we had a roll of duck tape and a can of WD-40. And my friends in the South, if you cant fix it with duck tape and WD-40, it cant be fixed! What we need to do is to scrap the one we got, get rid of the IRS, and its $10 billion dollar a year costs. Send 100,000 employees of the government into doing something else, and have a simple consumption tax that would free up our economy and give every single one of us a chance to go out and earn. We wouldnt be taxed for our income, our dividends, our savings. We wouldnt even be taxed for death, now wouldnt that be a phenomenal idea?

TRANSCRIPT:
FRED THOMPSON: Lastly, towards what youre talking about, people oughta have the option to pay a much simpler, much flatter tax. I have proposed a 10 percent rate and a 25 percent rate. The cut off is 100 thousand for a couple. Above 100 thousand you pay 25 percent, plain and simple. You could fill it out on that right there and send it in. As an option, if you want to do the old form, and do the old way, you have that option too. But weve worked it out so that its a revenue mutual deal, its not going to have to be, so called, paid for by raising taxes anywhere else. And I think so many people would take that option, because politicians in Washington would say, wait a minute, this is the way to go.

TRANSCRIPT:
HUCKABEE: "We're a nation that needs to change the tax system, it is now so complicated that if you call the IRS two consecutive days, you get two totally different answers. And guess what, both of them are wrong because when you fill out your form, they'll tell you you owe a penalty anyway. Many of you have seen Frank Lutz, the pollster on Fox News Channel. Frank actually polled and actually promises this is the truth, the polls show people are more afraid of an audit by the IRS than they are of getting mugged in this country. And I thought about that and thought that makes perfect sense, when you get mugged, it only lasts a few seconds. And they can only take what you have on you. If you get audited, it's going to take months, if not years, and they don't quit 'til they have every last dime you ever earned. It's time that we have a tax system that's totally different from the one we have, one that doesn't penalize productivity, one that wouldn't tax us on our income, be it corporate or individual [...] one that would be assessed at the consumption end, not the earning end. [applause] People say, how would we possibly survive, well, we'll survive quite well because we could replace the current tax system with the consumption tax, and here's what it does. It untaxes poor people and elderly people. It also makes it so that there's no more underground economy. Right now, you're not just paying your taxes, you're paying those that you're obligated to pay, but you're paying for the drug dealers, the prostitutes, the pimps, the gamblers, the illegals. Under a consumption tax, they become taxpayers just like you. Everybody would pay, and nobody gets to escape it. And guess what, April 15 would become just another beautiful spring day in North Carolina."

Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and Mary Nichols, Chair of the California Air Resources Board, dismiss skeptics' claims that humans are not contributing to global warming.

-----

California is a leader in the fight against dangerous climate change. But experts say more needs to be done. Much more.

What is the state of scientific knowledge about the causes and impacts of global warming? How can the U.S. and fast-growing economies such as China and India reduce carbon emissions to safe levels? Can California consumers, corporations and policymakers facilitate systemic change and spur others to act?

What are the costs and what are the opportunities? What role does innovation play? - The Commonwealth Club of California

Rajendra Kumar Pachauri (born August 20, 1940, Nainital, India) is an economist and environmental scientist who has served as the chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) since 2002. Pachauri is also the director general of the Energy and Resources Institute in New Delhi, an institution devoted to researching and promoting sustainable development. On December 10, 2007, Dr. Pachauri accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the IPCC, along with co-recipient Al Gore.

Mary D. Nichols was appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as Chairman of the California Air Resources Board in July 2007. She returns to the Air Board 30 years after serving as the Chairman under Governor Jerry Brown from 1978 to 1983

Forbes Magazine Editor-In-Chief and two-time Republican Presidential candidate Steve Forbes slams U.S. tax codes as inefficient and overly complicated, and argues for the implementation of a national "flat tax" to replace the current system.

-----

Leading economic prognosticator, Steve Forbes says the upcoming presidential election is the most critical since 1980. At that time, Ronald Reagan defeated incumbent Jimmy Carter, ushering in dramatic new policies that would set the course of this country for the next quarter-century.

What course does Forbes believe the country should take to end the current credit crisis? Will he promote a flat tax, medical savings accounts and a new Social Security system as he did for his 1996 and 2000 presidential platforms?

Join us as we discuss what's next for the U.S. economy - The Commonwealth Club of California

Steve Forbes is President and Chief Executive Officer of Forbes and Editor-in-Chief of Forbes magazine.

Since Mr. Forbes assumed his position in 1990, the company has launched a variety of new publications and businesses. They include: Forbes FYI, the irreverent lifestyle supplement; Forbes Global, the magazine's international publication; and Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Brazilian, Russian, Arabic and Hebrew editions of the magazine. Forbes also publishes the Gilder Technology Report, as well as a number of investment newsletters.

In 1997 Forbes entered the new media arena with the launch of Forbes.com. The site now attracts over seven million unique visitors a month and has become the leading destination site for business decision-makers and investors.

QUESTIONER: "I know that Governor Huckabee has supported the FAIR Tax. I have one follow up, do you support that or not? I understand that is a national sales and use tax.

MITT ROMNEY: Yeah, it has a lot of good elements to it. It is not part of my presidential platform and I'll tell you a couple of reasons why. One, I would like to uhh, thoroughly understand what its implications would be for seniors and for middle income folks. I do not want to raise taxes on middle income Americans. So I want to understand that thoroughly. Two, I want to get immediate action to encourage economic growth. And one of the aspects of the FAIR tax is it would require a complete restructuring of our entire tax system and probably a constitutional amendment. And as you know, getting the Democratic Congress to amend our constitution and to eliminate the income tax and then to get three-quarters of the states to do the same thing, would take a long time. So I'm instead proposing immediately we take off the tax on savings.

QUESTIONER: Uhh ok, that's good. I agree with you. The other thing, Huckabee talks about a 23 cent national sales tax. And everything I say, or read, says that 30 cents up to be revenue neutral. So I think you're right.

ROMNEY: And, uh, you know. We ought be...Truth in, Truth in lending here, as they say, is important. Which is, which is this is how they calculate the percentage. If something costs a dollar today, and you're probably, you're pretty good at math. This takes most of us a second to think about. If something costs a dollar today, after the FAIR tax, it would, a 30 cent tax would be put on top of it, which is a dollar thirty. But 30 cents is only 23% of a dollar thirty. So they call it a 23% tax. So it is either a 30% tax or a 23% tax depending on what's in the denominator. If anybody followed that, it has not been long since you were out of school."

TRANSCRIPT:JOHN MCCAIN: So we've gotta make these tax cuts permanent. There's another evil out there. We really have two tax codes in America and one of them's called the AMT. The Alternate Minimum Tax. It was designed for a handful of Americans and now it has reached down into 20 million American families. That thing must be repealed [applause] so that no one in America is exposed to the Alternate Minimum Tax.

Because of the influence of special interests in America, we not only don't simplify the tax code, we make it more complicated . . . what we need in my view is to have Americans given a choice. A choice of a simplified tax system that has, say, two tax brackets, generous deductions, including for children and that's it, and a flat tax [applause] of say, let's just say, for example, $100,000, you get about $27k in deductions and you pay a flat 15% rate.
Author David Cay Johnston discusses the history of progressive taxation, and argues that these policies are inherent to a democratic government.

-----

Since 1995 when David Cay Johnston turned his investigative reporting skills to explore the murky waters of tax law, Some tax policy officials now consider him, as one tax law professor put it, "the de facto chief tax enforcement officer of the United States."

Johnston will detail how a strong and growing economy lends itself to job uncertainty, debt, bankruptcy, and economic fear for a vast number of Americans. As tax season draws to a close, come find out who is getting a free lunch and who is picking up the bill - The Commonwealth Club of California

David Cay Johnston was an investigative journalist for The New York Times now focusing on the subject of taxation. He accepted a buyout offer from the Times in April 2008 and is now an independent reporter.

He most recently published Free Lunch: How the Wealthiest Americans Enrich Themselves at Government Expense and Stick You With The Bill, about hidden subsidies, rigged markets, and corporate socialism. It follows Perfectly Legal: The Covert Campaign to Rig Our Tax System to Benefit the Super Rich - and Cheat Everybody Else, a New York Times bestseller. Johnston received the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Beat Reporting "for his penetrating and enterprising reporting that exposed loopholes and inequities in the U.S. tax code, which was instrumental in bringing about reforms." He also won the Book of the Year award from Investigative Reporters & Editors.
