<br />QUESTIONER: My question's about global warming? Do you think global warming has an effect on our food today and that's possibly why we're experiencing shortages? And what do you plan to do about that?</p>
<p>JOHN MCCAIN: I think global warming is, uh, real, I'll be glad to--, I think climate change is real, I'll be glad to continue this debate. And I think it's a legitimate debate. There are people who have honestly held views on the other side of this issue. But I believe that, as Tony Blair once said, suppose that climate change, there's no such thing and yet we adopt green technologies and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and eventually bring them under control. Then all we've done is hand our kids a cleaner planet. But suppose we're right, those of us that believe that climate change is real and we do nothing. Then what kind of planet do we hand our children and our grandchildren? The answer's very obvious. I am convinced, contrary to the belief of many people, that when we develop nuclear, solar, hybrid, a battery that'll take a car a hundred miles, hydrogen, all of the green technologies. All of the green technologies, and eliminate our dependence on foreign oil. Then it will be an economic boon to our country. It will help America's economy. Because the innovation—whenever there's innovation, prices come down. So, t--,I, uh, I, I, I, uh, reject, uh, in the strongest terms, this thesis that if we adopt green technologies and we develop them and we do what's necessary to eliminate our dependence on foreign oil and eliminate, reduce and eliminate greenhouse gas emissions then I think it's good for our economy. Look at the environmental effects of some of the problems we have already. And how much is the cost there? Look at the pollution problems and the environmental problems they have in China today and in India. And I am convinced, with everything I know, that we can develop the innovative technology because we hav e the best worker in the world. And I would point out again, what I said earlier. Change is hard, my friends, change is hard. But we must change, we must change. When I went down to South Carolina during the primary and I told my friends in South Carolina, the old steel mills, textile mills, the old textile mills aren't coming back. And yet, BMW plant came there and a Michelin plant came there and there's businesses and industries locating in South Carolina today. And if a business will locate there, the government, the state government will train their workers for them, that's change and that's good change and we gotta have that change. We can't go back to the old ways, we have to go forward. And the best way I know of doing it is adopt to the compelling challenges the nation and the world face and that's the dependence on foreign oil and the issue of climate change. There's a nexus between them. And I'm confident that it'll be the best thing over time for America's economy rather than anything that might be harmful to it.</p>

<p>TRANSCRIPT:
<br />QUESTIONER: . . . in terms of biofuels we have certainly seen the long and far reaching global effects of increasing demand for food crops in order to fuel our vehicles. So I actually have a two part question. My first question I, I would like to know what your priorities are in, not just biofuels, but other alternative forms of energy. And also, what would you propose to do to cap oil companies that are currently receiving windfall profits from their sales?</p>
<p>JOHN MCCAIN: Well, first of all, on the biofuels, I'm all for every kind of alternate kind of energy. Wind, solar, uh, tide, every kind of alternate fuel. But I'm not for distorting the market. And when we subsidize ethanol, and we put tariffs on imported ethanol. We distort the market. And so, what happens? People grow corn and they grow it for alternate fuels and it is one of the reasons, not the only reason, but one of the reasons why we've seen a dramatic inflation in food prices. Because whenever you distort the market through government intervention in such a fashion, you see the results that we have. I'm for wind, solar, tide, all that. I'm all for nuclear. And I believe that we're not going to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and become energy independent, which we will do, of foreign oil, unless we use nuclear power and use it in great abundance. And it is not a problem of technology, it's a problem of what you do with the spent nuclear fuel. Whether you reprocess it or whether you store it someplace. And the technology is there, but the NIMBY problem is there. And the resistance of extremist environmental groups against nuclear power. The United States Navy has sailed ships around the world for more than 60 years with nuclear power plants on them and we've never had a problem/ So I think we need to store it and reprocess it. The French do, the Europeans do, there's no reason why we can't as well. I don't like obscene profits being made anywhere. And I'd be glad to look, not just at the windfall profits tax, that's not what bothers me. But we should look at any incentives that we are giving to people or industries or coroporations that are distorting the market. And again, it's a--, I bring it up again. We now have a farm bill that's winding its way through the Senate and House of Representatives that protects sugar. Why should we do that when we have seen an increasing cost of food and particularly those, including those that have sugar in it. Why shouldn't we, why should we raise protectionist barriers to sugar into this country? Why should we pay farmers, who make as much as $900,000 a year, additional tax dollars of yours and mine. If I were the president, I would veto that farm bill in a New. York. Minute.</p>

<br />REPORTER: . . . I'd like to know what you think about the Brazilian ethanol</p>
<p>JOHN MCCAIN: I think the Brazilian ethanol ought to be allowed to be imported in this country and I think the fact that we've slapped a tariff on it is, again, distortion of the market and an inability or an [inaudible] to acquire alternate fuels at a lower price. And I also believe that the subsidies that we have put on ethanol have distorted the market and have had an effect on an increase in food prices in America. I have been opposed to ethanol subsidies, opposed to tariffs on imports of ethanol because I believe in the free market.</p>
