<p><p>The question before senate Democrats today wasn't whether or not to seek revenge on Joe Lieberman.</p> <p>The question was whether or not to strengthen the hand of one of the fiercest proponents of Bush-McCain foreign and homeland security policy.</p> <p>Ask yourself this: will it be easier or harder for us to repair the damage we've inflicted on our reputation around the world with Joe Lieberman in charge of one of the key national security committees? What happens when he uses that committee to highlight phantom threats to the homeland emanating from places like Iraq? Do you think this is a sign that Democrats are serious about withdrawing from Iraq, or a signal that they too plan to stay the course?</p> <p>Senate Democrats were right about one thing. This was a pragmatic issue. The problem is that by misunderstanding the situation they face, they made the wrong pragmatic decision.</p> <p>And because of that, it will be even harder to achieve the change that we need.</p> </p>

<p><p>Just when you thought the whole "I can see Russia from Alaska" thing couldn't get any funnier...CNN's Gary Tuchman <a href="http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2008/09/30/you-can-see-russia-from-here/">delivers the goods</a>: it turns out that Sarah Palin has never seen Russia from Alaska.</p> <p>Tuchman went up to the part of Alaska from which you can actually see Russia, a remote island called <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diomede_Islands">Little Diomede</a> located just 2.4 miles from it's Russian twin, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diomede_Islands">Big Diomede</a>.</p> <p>It turns out Gary Tuchman's trip to Little Diomede sets him apart from Sarah Palin -- because she's never actually been there, nor has she set eyes on its neighbor in Russia.</p></p>

<br />QUESTIONER: Governor Palin, there has been quite a bit of discussion about your perceived lack of foreign policy experience. And I want to give you your chance, if you could please respond to that criticism, and give us specific skills that you think you have to bring to the White House to rebut that or mitigate that concern. </p>
<p>PALIN: Well, I think because Im a Washington outsider that opponents are going to be looking for a whole lot of things that they can criticize and that they can try to beat the candidate here, who chose me as his partner, to try to tear down the ticket. But as for foreign policy, you know, I think I am prepared and I know that on January 20th, if we are so blessed to be sworn into office as your president and vice president, certainly well be ready, Ill be ready. I have that confidence, I have that readiness, and if you want specifics with specific policies or countries, go ahead, and you can ask me and you can play stump the candidate if you want to. But we are ready to serve. </p>

And John McCain either doesn't know who the Prime Minister of Spain is, thinks Spain is a country in Latin America, or possibly both.</p> <p>In case, you haven't seen our updates from last night, yesterday John McCain was interviewed on the Florida affiliate of Spanish radio network Union Radio. And in the interview McCain appeared not to know who the Prime Minister of Spain was and assumed he was some anti-American leftist leader from South America. </p> <p>After the interviewer presses him a couple times on the point and tries to focus him on the fact that Prime Minister Zapatero isn't from Mexico and isn't a drug lord either McCain comes back at her saying, "All I can tell you is that I have a clear record of working with leaders in the Hemisphere that are friends with us and standing up to those who are not. And that's judged on the basis of the importance of our relationship with Latin America and the entire region."</p><br /></div></p>

<br />JOHN MCCAIN: Now, my friends let me just remind you we still live in a very dangerous world. Events recently of Russian aggression into Georgia are an example of Russia trying not only to reassemble the old Russian empire but control of the energy supplies that go to the world and, my friends these are tough times, but the fact is also that we have succeeded in Iraq and we are winning and our troops will come home with victory and honor.</p>
<p>If Senator Obama, wed have suffered defeat, Iranian influence would have increased and we would face greater chaos in the region. Senator Obama has refused to acknowledge that he was wrong about the surge. He said it wouldnt succeed. Thanks to General David Petraeus and these brave young Americans, we are winning in Iraq and we will come home with honor. </p>
<p>Senator Obama was wrong about Iran. He was wrong about Iraq. He was wrong about Russia. Hes wrong about Americas national security challenges in the future and he has no experience and more importantly, he lacks the judgment to lead this country.</p>

<p>Professor Chomsky asserts that the Democratic presidential candidates are hoping, as did the Democrats during the Vietnam War that "the hawks were right" and that we will be able to achieve some kind of victory in Iraq.</p>
<p>He muses at the argument over how many Iraqis have been killed, as if people think it is OK if we have ONLY killed 100,000 innocent civilians.</p>
<p>Part of the "good news" reported about Iraq are their shared beliefs. However, "Iraqis of all sectarian and ethnic groups believe that the US military invasion is the primary root of the violent differences among them, and see the departure of [what they call] 'occupying forces' as the key to national reconciliation."</p>

<p>Some other good news from Iraq is that Iraqis believe in some of our highest values, including prohibitions against agressive war - believing that all countries should adhere to the international prohibitions against countries invading other countries who pose no threat to them.</p>
