[...]Where you have a child born here, and then when they get, at the appropriate age, they can bring in everybody else in the family. And they use that as an anchor. Now, I'll be very realistic with you, the courts have held, for a long long time in this country that anybody born here is an American citizen. It creates a special, constitutional issue for us. The real problem, is the chain migration that comes from that. I think that people here are illegal need to go back, whether they have children here or not. [...]But the real problem is making sure that you can't set in a system of chain migration so that fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, everybody else can come in, I think it needs to be limited to spouses and minor children. And if we did that we'd be, I'm talking about legally now, legally, legally.

We oughta be a nation with high fences and wide gates but we get to decide when to open the gate and how long it should be open.

It's not just 11 or 12 million people, it's 11 or 12 million more, 11 or 12 million more on top of that. And at the same time that we're giving lip service to securing the border, we've got these sanctuary cities over here. It's enticing people to come across the border. And people say "well, we feel sorry for the children" I feel sorry for the children, but it's their parents that are doing it. And we can't entice more parents to bring more children which is what we're doing with these sanctuary cities.

FRED THOMPSON: Notion like what Steve King was just talking about, something Ive spent a lot of my time making. The idea that the Federal judiciary is supposed to decide cases not social policy for this country, and bad social policy at that. And the idea that we in America dont go looking for fights, I dont care what anybody says, weve received a lot of criticisms, and I point out that our people have shed more blood for the liberty and freedom of other people around the world than all the other countries combined. So dont tell me what kind of country we live in. Thats the kind of country we live in. But we also understand that the best way to stay out of a fight is to be stronger than your adversary. And if you find yourself in a fight you prevail in that fight, because to do anything else makes you more vulnerable in the future. It makes you more subject to attack than you ever would have been before. Every one of those principles are under assault today. Theyre under assault from the kind of society we live in. Theyre under assault in a way that causes us to look at our children and grandchildren and wonder what kind of world that theyre going to grow up in. And next year, especially, theyre going to be under assault from a liberal, big government, high taxes, weak on national defense, Democratic Party that is licking its chomps to get back in power to lead us down the road to a welfare state. And were going to stand in the way of that. Were not going to let that happen. Were not going to turn the keys of this country over to those folks.

TRANSCRIPT: FRED THOMPSON: The situation in Pakistan, I had a...that's an interesting part of the world, and a dangerous part of the world, as you know. I had a chance to visit wish Musharraf back a few years ago, back when he first came into office, I came away with the impression that, for a military guy, who'd just taken over a country, he was pretty, uh, pretty modest and reasonable guy, who seemed to wanna do the right thing. I've been watching pretty closely. I don't put too much stock in my own impressions or what I see in his eyes, you know, I look to see what's in his country's interest and so far, his country's interest has been pretty much, what I think our country's interests are in terms of beating down the Taliban for example, and uh, Afghanistan. But we have two competing issues there. One is the rule of law, we can't [...] and shut down the courts and jailing a lot of people the way that he's doing there, that's not right. He's hurting himself in all probability. It's easy to be on the other side of the world and tell a guy what's in his own best interest. But I really do believe it's in his own best interest not to do that. And apparently, maybe he's seeing the same thing, because he just let a lot of people out of jail. On the other hand, there are nuclear weapons there. They got a fella over there by the name of A. Q. Khan, who went around the world, giving, selling nuclear technology, to goodness knows who, we don't know the full extent of it yet. We know that one of them was Libya, and we found a Chinese designed, nuclear warhead design, you know, when we went in there, Libya backed off, thankfully. We know that the Chinese have helped Pakistan over the years, they were very very proficient, high tech, scientifically oriented uh people there, and they have great great capability, but they have great capability for, um, destruction too if the wrong people get their hands on those weapons. There are people inside that government, who are enemies of the United States. There are people inside that government who are friendly to the Taliban. And Musharraf has on his hands now, he has the Taliban, coming over there into his country,out of Afghanistan. He's tried to go out and subdue them, he's lost a lot of soldiers. If you ever see, I stood in a place called Khyber Pass, you may have heard of it, some of you may have been there, and you look at that, man, you can't, you could uh, you could lose a freight train in there in about 100 yards. And nobody'd ever find it, I mean it is rough. It is rough. So he's got that on his hands, there all through those mountains there. Apparently, apparently Osama Bin Laden is still hiding out there, he's having to deal with that, deal with his radicals there you know that want to take over the government while at the same time [...] deal with us, and help us to the extent that he can. As you can imagine, average guy on the street in Pakistan, is not necessarily in love with the United States of America. We get blamed for everything that goes wrong in the world, that place is no different, so we need to understand that we have got a guy that more than most around the world is trying to do the right thing under very very tough circumstances. So we need to do two things at once, we need to hope that he doesn't fall precipitously and that government fall into the hands of radicals, and that he will move toward open elections, so that whoever is running that country has got some credibility and hopefully through that kind of an open process, they will elect either him or somebody else who's who understands that it makes no sense to be distributing nuclear weapons around the world; it makes no sense to get back into a fight with India which is another potential disaster, you know, waiting to happen that we're trying just to kinda stay in the middle of, and that uh, freedom and liberty's a pretty good thing, we've had a pretty good track record, with all the troubles in the world. When we started this experiement called the United States of America, there weren't any democracies. Now depending on what's, how you, how you define your terms, most people in this world are governed by a democratic government, elected government, so, slowly, we're kind of moving in the right direction. A large part of that has been the strength and the stability of the United States of America. Thank you very very much.

TRANSCRIPT:FRED THOMPSON: Deregulation of course is a broad, important subject. When I was chairman of the governmental affairs committee, I introduced a bill with Carl Levin, a liberal democrat, in hopes that we could come together- he represented Detroit- so he was kind of interested in deregulation suprisingly enough as I was and it was based on the proposition that we now have regulation on regulation on regulation that is not often thought out, and doesn't undergo a cost benefit analysis. Our theory was- ya know, we need some regulation, but for every new regulation let's have a cost benefit analysis. How much does this cost us, as a nation, both the direct and indirect cost. And how much are we having to pay for it? You know. It may SOUND good, you get a headline, you know, in your hometown newspaper- you sponsored a bill to regulate so-and-so, we're gonna wipe out this bad stuff, and we're gonna promote this [...] then you go on about your business and forget about it and let the bureaucracy take it over for the next fifty years. And you have to ask yourself whether or not it's panning out. So, uh, I think we're overregulating, I think we're stifling American business in many respects. We live in an international economy, everybody knows that, but, so much of that economy now is dependent our manufacturers are dependent on the regulations that they're getting from Washington, that's the difference in profit or loss. The price they can charge is half set on a global basis, there's not as much that they can do about that. They can't raise the prices to meet it necessarily because the competition won't let 'em. But at the same time they're suffering from the cost of additional regulation on top of additional regulation here, and it's making us less competitive in the economic market place. So that's my general read on regulation. If you got a regulation, put it on the table, let's analyze it and do it objectively and scientifically and see what kind of cost benefit ratio we can get out of that.

FRED THOMPSON: Well, I think we got to keep our eye on the ball. I think, at the end of the day, the American people are going to vote not against somebody, but for somebody. Some of us are already falling into the Clinton theme. One day they are campaigning based on strength and leadership. The next day, theyre ganging up on her. All the guys are jumping on her. So were out there, one day our guys are pounding away and making fun of her and carrying on, all her speeches are about Hillary, Hillary, Hillary. And then the next day they went, oh my goodness, shes turned things on us. How do we react to that? My answer to that, for our nominee, and my answer if Im the nominee, is going to be Im going to be me. Im going to talk about the future of this country. Im going to talk about national security. Im going to talk about future prosperity of the world these kids are going to grow up in. Im going to talk about the unity that were going to need as a nation to get through these things. And time and time again, Im going to draw contrast with my policies and her policies, if shes the nominee. But I will not pick up the paper every morning to find out what she said, or what shes doing, or whether or not shes the tough guy, or the nice guy that particular day to determine what Im going to do. Im going to be me, put forth my policies, do my thing, my vision of whats good for America.

And just simply led to the free-est, most tolerable, most successful, most prosperous nation in the history of the world. And we became a good nation, not only a great nation. Our countrymen have shed more blood for the liberty of other people than all the other countries in the history of the world. Were proud of that, were proud of that. And we became that because those basic, what I thought, common sense, sound, conservative principles.

Sometimes there is no good choice versus bad choice option. I think that was situation with the question of going in there in the first place. Sometimes a country is faced with two bad choices. Now we have two bad choices now. One is to stay and watch this thing continue in the direction in. and still suffer from not being at peace. The other bad option, which I think is a much worse option, is to precipitously leave there with our tail between our legs because we didnt have the stomach for [the violence] Iran would come in there and fill that vacuum they certainly intend on having nuclear weapons the botton line is [Iran is] going to be. in a position to have a nuclear weapon the whole area is in danger we gotta understand what the stakes are
