Afshin Rattansi talks to Vaughan Smith, the founder of the Frontline Club after the abduction of former Press TV correspondent, Amanda Lindhout.

TORONTO STAR
27-year-old Albertan kidnapped in Somalia described as having passion to help needy
Deena Kamel
Staff Reporter
Long before Amanda Lindhout began reporting in war zones, the Canadian freelance journalist kidnapped Saturday in Somalia was a waitress in a Calgary bar with her eye on the big picture: She dreamed of becoming a photojournalist.
Paul MacPherson first met Lindhout in that bar seven years ago where their friendship began.
"She is very charismatic, very strong-willed," he says of Lindhout by email. "But open-minded at the same time."
Lindhout, a 27-year-old freelance print and TV reporter normally based in Baghdad, was abducted along with Australian reporter Nigel Brennan, a few kilometres outside the Somali capital, Mogadishu, along with their Somali driver and two guards.
Journalists and humanitarian workers are frequently abducted for ransom in Somalia, one of the world's poorest and most violence-racked countries. Saturday's abduction came during a period of especially heavy fighting, including the capture of Kismayo, Somalia's third-largest city, by Islamic insurgents.
MacPherson called Lindhout "a real humanitarian."
"She has a passion for helping the underprivileged of the world and trying to get their story out," he said.

The Frontline Club opened its doors in late 2003, soon after the Frontline News TV agency closed down. Frontline News TV was created by a group of freelance cameramen during the Romanian revolution. It went on to become a well-known player in the independent fringe of television newsgathering. The Club was founded by the surviving members of the original team of cameramen, and dedicated to the memory of friends and colleagues who lost their lives gathering news and images from the world's conflict zones.

Coerced confessions were involved in two different stories I saw reported last Friday, April 6.

I took my first clip from a story on PBS's NewsHour about the release of British sailors from Iran that you can find in its entirety at: www.pbs.org

My second clip comes from a KXTV channel 10 story on the new trial hearing in the Hamid Hayat case that you can find in its entirety at: www.news10.net

My third clip comes from a PBS Frontline story from last year that you can see in its entirety at: www.pbs.org

And, finally, the quote from the Atlantic article referenced in my video is available at: www.theatlantic.com
