We are entering the Peak Oil era. The growth of oil production is slowing, driving up oil and gasoline gas prices, firing inflation, driving unemployment, straining our global economy, and threatening to collapse our entire system. We are reaching Peak Oil and we are unprepared.

Teacher Aaron Wissner, in a compact 10-minute video summary, details Peak Oil, the evidence, the impacts, and the solutions.
Town Hall
Waco, TX 03/03/08

TRANSCRIPTION
QUESTIONER: "...we cannot pay $5, $6, $7 a gallon for gas...it's got to be fixed or this country will go down."

McCain: "Thank you sir. I totally and completely agree with you. You may have seen, at one point, our oil was at $103 a barrel. My friends, half of our trade deficit now is to pay for imported oil.

"You will now be spending over $400 billion a year on imported oil, half of our trade deficit. Much of that money goes to countries that don't like us very much and some of that money will end up in the hands of terrorist organizations. [...] There is a compelling requirement for energy independence and oil independence because of a national security issue and those I just said.

"But also, my friends I believe that climate change is real and, if we're going to eliminate or reduce greenhouse gas emissions we have to have alternate forms of energy as well and my friends, that's tide, wind, solar and it's also nuclear.

"It's also nuclear power. Nuclear power's got to be, in my view, part of any way of seriously addressing this issue. By the way, the French (we always imitate the French)--80% of their electricity is generated by nuclear power [...].

"It will be a national priority to eliminate our dependence on foreign oil. We must do it. It's a national security issue."

Audience member: "...get the price to $40/barrel. Everyone can live with that."

MCCAIN: "You know the problem is we've got India and China, both growing economies, both making demands on a finite resource. I'd like to tell ya I can see it going back down to $40 a barrel, but I haven't met anybody yet that knows that unless there is a dramatic reduction of our dependence on it.

"So, and that means we have to be totally independent on it so we don't care whether it's $40 a barrel or $450 a barrel. We've got to eliminate our dependence on foreign oil."

General Motors Chairman and CEO discusses the effects national and state fuel economy standards are having on the automobile industry.

-----

General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner speaks at an event hosted by The Commonwealth Club of California titled Can GM Really Be Green Motors?

General Motors will bring 16 new hybrids to market in the next few years, including a futuristic plug-in. Has the world's largest car maker turned the corner on climate change?

The Detroit automaker still doesn't like some of California's environmental laws, but it now recognizes that climate change is a real problem to be solved. The answer, Wagoner says, is to diversify fuel sources to include ethanol, hybrids and one day even hydrogen - The Commonwealth Club of California

G. Richard Wagoner Jr. has been Chairman of General Motors Corp., since May 1, 2003 and its Chief Executive Officer since June 1, 2000. Mr. Wagoner serves as Chief Executive Officer of General Motors North America. He joined General Motors Corporation in 1977.

(Latin Pulse: May 5, 2008) Rising gas prices and the threat of oil shortages around the world are nothing new. What is surprising are the claims by one of the United States' main suppliers that it's already running out.
Mexico is one of the main suppliers of crude oil to the United States, but recently that country has experienced a reduction in oil production. That concerns not only the oil industry but also Mexican citizens.
Are we closer to the flash point than we thought, or is this just a political ploy to put pressure on the United States?
Are other nations leaving the U.S. behind in the race to adopt new energy technologies, and will our oil addiction create a drag on the economy?

Hoover Institution Senior Fellow Thomas Sowell argues that reports of stagnation among American incomes over the last several decades are an economic and political myth.

-----

Peter Robinson speaks with Thomas Sowell about his new book Economic Facts and Fallacies in which Sowell exposes some of the most popular fallacies about economic issues.

Sowell takes on the conventional thinking on a wide swath of America's economic life, from male-female economic differences to income stagnation, executive pay, and social mobility to economics of higher education. In all cases he demonstrates how economics relates to the social issues that deeply affect our country - Hoover Institution

Thomas Sowell is an American economist, political writer, and commentator. He is currently a senior fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. In 1990, he won the Francis Boyer Award, presented by the American Enterprise Institute. In 2002 he was awarded the National Humanities Medal for prolific scholarship melding history, economics, and political science.

Peter M. Robinson is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution, where he writes about business and politics, edits Hoover's quarterly journal, the Hoover Digest, and hosts Hoover's television program, Uncommon Knowledge.

Author Nassim Nicholas Taleb discusses the central theme of his bestselling book, "The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable."

-----

The Future Has Always Been Crazier Than We Thought with Nassim Nicholas Taleb.

Author Nassim Nicholas Taleb discusses his book, The Black Swan in relation to predicting the future, learning from the consequences of the unknown, and the power of randomness.

Nassim Nicholas Taleb is an essayist, belletrist, and researcher only interested in one single topic, chance (particularly extreme and rare events, the "Black Swans" i.e. outliers); but it falls at the intersection of philosophy/epistemology (skepticism; knowledge about the dynamics of history; inferential claims), philosophy/ethics (stoicism facing random events; theories of nonhedonic happiness), mathematical sciences (probability theory, statistical physics), social science/finance (opacity & incomplete information in economics), and cognitive science (the mental biases making us "fooled" by randomness). He mainly derives his intuitions from a 2-decade long and intense practice of derivatives trading ("nondull" activities with plenty of randomness).

Taleb is currently a researcher at London Business School. He the Dean’s Professor in the Sciences of Uncertainty University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Fellow in Mathematics in Finance, Adjunct Professor of Mathematics at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University (since 1999), and research fellow, Wharton School Financial Institutions Center, and Chairman, Empirica LLC.

Taleb held senior trading positions with trading houses in New York and London and operated as a floor trader before founding Empirica LLC. His degrees include an MBA from the Wharton School and a Ph.D. from the University of Paris. He is the author of Dynamic Hedging, Fooled by Randomness, and The Black Swan.

E.U. Commissioner for Trade Peter Mandelson gives a defense of free trade practices and globalization.

-----

Europe and the U.S.: Confronting Global Challenges with Peter Mandelson.

In a speech at the Carnegie Endowment, EU Commissioner of Trade Peter Mandelson argued that the European Union and the United States must use their collective economic weight to underwrite the openness of the global economy as its adjusts to the rise of new economic powers and greater global flows of investment. Mandelson said that the U.S. and the EU should use their own openness to "underwrite a strong multilateral order based on cooperation and economic openness" - Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

Peter Mandelson was born in Britain in 1953.

He studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at St Catherine's College, Oxford. As a young man he lived in Tanzania for a year, an experience which formed life-long impressions of Africa and the challenges of fighting poverty. A life-long pro-European, he led the British delegation to the first ever meeting of the European Communities Youth Forum in Strasbourg in 1979.

After working as an economist at the Trades Union Congress and as a current affairs TV producer, Peter Mandelson was later appointed Labour Party Director for Campaigns and Communications in 1985. Later he was Tony Blair’s Campaign Manager in the May 1997 election that brought Labour to power in Britain.

In 1992 he was elected as member of parliament for the Northern English constituency of Hartlepool. He served until 2004 upon his appointment to the European Commission.

Peter Mandelson is honorary Chair of Policy Network, a European and international think tank whose journal and conferences promote the exchange and debate of centre-left policy ideas and European social democratic thinking. He was UK chairman of the UK-Japan 21st Century Group, which brings together leading academics, politicians and business people. He has traveled widely and has lectured throughout Europe, in Asia and the United States.

Tom Campbell, Dean of UC-Berkeley's Haas School of Business, examines causes for the recent slowing down of the U.S. economy.

-----

The Annual Bank of America Walter E. Hoadley Economic Forecast with Tom Campbell.

As we enter 2008 with a volatile stock market and a real estate crisis, what's essential to know about the economy for the year ahead? Former member of Congress and Haas Business School Dean Campbell helps us navigate uncertain economic waters in the annual forecast - The Commonwealth Club of California

Tom Campbell is the thirteenth dean of the Haas School of Business, a position he has held since August 2002. He formerly held positions of US Congressman, California State Senator, Stanford University law professor, and, recently, California's Director of Finance.

In December 2004, Dean Campbell took a one-year leave of absence from the school after being appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to be director of the California Department of Finance. He returned as dean of the Haas School in November 2005.

Prior to joining the Haas School in 2002, Dean Campbell was a law professor at Stanford University Law School for 19 years, beginning in 1983. He was elected five times to represent the Silicon Valley area of California in the United States Congress. Among his legislative achievements were authorship of the 1998 Food Bank Relief Act and the 2000 Peace Corps Reauthorization Act.

Campbell also was elected as a California state senator in 1993. During a two-year term, he earned ratings by the Sacramento-based "California Journal" as the most ethical state senator, the best overall senator and the state Senate's best problem solver.

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy ignited America's Apollo Project and sparked a revolution in space exploration. Today the New Apollo Energy Project is poised to revolutionize the production of energy and thereby save our planet. The nation that built the world's most powerful rockets, its most advanced computers, and its most sophisticated life support systems is ready to create the world's most powerful solar energy systems, its most advanced wind energy turbines, and its most sophisticated hybrid cars. This will result in nothing less than a second American Revolution. Who are the dreamers in California who believe they can use mirrors and liquid metal to wring more electricity from a ray of sunshine than anyone else on earth can?
Who are the innovators who have built a contraption that can turn the energy of a simple wave off the Oregon coast into burnt toast in Idaho? Who are the scientists in Massachusetts who have invented a battery that now runs your hand drill and will soon run your car? Readers will meet them all in this book. They will learn how the new energy economy will grow, the research that is required, and the legislation that must be passed to make the vision a reality.

This is a thoughtful, optimistic book, based on sound facts. No one before has tied together the concepts of economic growth and greenhouse gas reductions with such concrete examples. No one has previously told the real stories of the people who are right now on the front lines of the energy revolution. The co-authors, one a U.S. Congressman who is the primary sponsor of the New Apollo Energy Act, and the other the founder of the Apollo Alliance, have joined their experience, expertise, and passion for a clean energy future to lay out the path to stop global warming and gain energy independence.
