Complete video at: fora.tv

Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope and SmartPower President Brian Keane argue that living in an environmentally friendly can be economically beneficial. This excerpt is taken from a panel discussion entitled "Environmentalism: What's Next?" recorded at the 2008 Democratic National Convention, in collaboration with the New Republic.

-----

Panelists Brian F. Keane, Ted Nordhaus, Ben Nelson, and Carl Pope describe their efforts to make make "going green" easier, faster, and cheaper. They argue that the government shouldn't make fossil fuels more expensive, but rather they should invest in making alternative sources cheaper and marketing them to consumers.

Carl Pope is the Executive Director of the Sierra Club, an American environmental organization founded by conservationist pioneer John Muir in 1892. Pope was appointed to his position as Executive Director in 1992, the club's centennial.

Brian F. Keane is President of SmartPower, a nationwide non-profit marketing organization dedicated to promoting clean, renewable energy and energy efficiency. Hailed as the "Got Milk" campaign for wind, solar and waterpower, SmartPower's award winning marketing campaign has been credited with creating hundreds of GWh of clean, renewable energy across the nation.

The sharp increase in fuel prices in Myanmar is having a knock-on effect on food and other essentials.

The government's abrupt decision last August sparked a rare show of defiance across major cities.

As Hannah Belcher reports, eking out a living has become more difficult since then.

John McCain
Town Hall
York, PA 08/12/08

TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: I want to say a word about nuclear to you. And I'm very familiar with Three Mile Island, and I'm very familiar with Chernobyl. But I'm also familiar, as I hope you are too, that we've been sailing Navy ships around the world for 60 years with nuclear power plants on them, and we've never had an accident. We've never had a serious accident! So we need to store spent nuclear fuel, and we need to reprocess. [...] So we, we can! We can! You know, you pick up the paper and you listen to these various pundits and all that, and they says we can't solve the nuclear problem, we can't reprocess, we can't store it; we can't develop a electric car that'll take someone 200 miles or 100 miles before you have to plug it in. We can't. Everybody's saying we can't. That's not America! America's a country that has met and overcome every challenge we have ever faced, and we can do this one. We have the ability, innovation and the technology that we will become independent of foreign oil.

QUESTIONER: Senator, as you may know General Motors is currently the leader in the production of E-85 flexible fuel vehicles, such as the best-selling Impala. And E-85 has already proven itself in being the most cost effective ways to both reduce CO2 emissions and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. As president, what would you do to improve E-85 availability, create the right E-85 infrastructure, and possible create an incentive to purchase E-85 capable vehicles?

MCCAIN: "I'd like to see us embark on making every automobile manufactured in America flex-fuel. Uh, the Brazilians have been able to do exactly that, as you know. And the Brazilians have been able to eliminate their dependence on foreign oil, not just because of that, but it's been a key element. As you also know, they use sugar cane-based ethanol. Uh, I don't support ethanol subsidies. And I didn't at the time, and it's distorting the market. And most experts today will say that because we subsidized ethanol, it has distorted the market and now contributed to now the inflationary pressures, uh, in our country, which are very, very dangerous, to say the least. So, I'm all for encouragement and whatever's necessary to make sure every vehicle is flex-fueled, that every gas station has a pump that says E-85 on it, and it's clear to me that ethanol corn-based as well as sugar cane-based as well as bio fuels as well as other alternative sources of energy come onto the market and that they be made available. And I would devote most- a lot of my efforts into that direction. And again, not invented here. The Brazilians have been able to do that, and we should be able to that as well. Again, in straight talk, I did not support the ethanol subsidies, I do not support the high tariffs of 55 cents a gallon on imported ethanol which is sugar cane-based because I think that distorts the market and I think evidence is pretty clear and that already has."

As you have probably already seen Fox26 in Houston, TX did a story on Denny Klein a couple of years ago. That story has since made it way around the world via youtube and other video sites. I saw the story when it aired and directed many friends to the video on youtube. Then not too long ago I saw a teaser for a related story about turning your car into a water burning hybrid. I truly thought they were about to do another story about the technology of using water as a fuel. That didn't turn out to be the case. They had Scotty Kilmer a quack mechanic who does a weekend segment on a different Houston News station come on as their "expert" to debunk all of this HHO stuff.
When I saw the story I was stunned. It totally ignored the previous story that I saw. So I decided to do a little research to see if there was more info on the web. That's when I found out that the website they're showing in the news report appears to be Denny Klein's website.(He's the guy interviewed in the first story. Who says in that story that the car could run on water exclusively, but is currently running as a gas/water hybrid just like the plans say.)
Also, if the person controlling the mouse on that webpage in the story would have scrolled down a bit, you would have seen the original story THEY did that has now become so popular on youtube.(Because it's embedded on the bottom of the page they're on.)
This debunking story convinced me to do my own personal test of this by going to the website listed in the report and buying the information to build my own Water Hybrid.
I'll post back when I finish with my own results.

The United Kingdom has launched an electric sports car, in an effort to give eco-cars an image boost.

The key to popularising electric cars is to make them more desirable, simply being environmentally friendly is not enough for most people to buy the product.

Electric cars, are often pictured small, impractical, and sometimes even ugly vehicles.

However, a company in the UK has unveiled "Lightning" an electric sports car - claiming to revolutionise the industry with its looks and technology.

Al Jazeera's Tessa Parry-Wingfield reports from London's Motor Show on the eco-car trend that is changing the public's perception.

Drivers in the Philippines have been hit with no less than 18 fuel price hikes this year alone.

As inflation and fuel costs soar more and more commuters are turning to public transport, putting the train and bus services in the capital under enormous strain.

Leaders of some of the world's richest countries are heading to Japan for their annual meeting.

This year's G8 summit will focus on African development issues, skyrocketing fuel prices and the possibility of worldwide economic recession.

Japan think part of the solution to the rising cost of fuel, and a way to reduce green house emissions, is nuclear energy.

Paul Allen reports.

John McCain
Town Hall
Charlotte, NC 05/05/08

TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: . . . in terms of biofuels we have certainly seen the long and far reaching global effects of increasing demand for food crops in order to fuel our vehicles. So I actually have a two part question. My first question I, I would like to know what your priorities are in, not just biofuels, but other alternative forms of energy. And also, what would you propose to do to cap oil companies that are currently receiving windfall profits from their sales?

JOHN MCCAIN: Well, first of all, on the biofuels, I'm all for every kind of alternate kind of energy. Wind, solar, uh, tide, every kind of alternate fuel. But I'm not for distorting the market. And when we subsidize ethanol, and we put tariffs on imported ethanol. We distort the market. And so, what happens? People grow corn and they grow it for alternate fuels and it is one of the reasons, not the only reason, but one of the reasons why we've seen a dramatic inflation in food prices. Because whenever you distort the market through government intervention in such a fashion, you see the results that we have. I'm for wind, solar, tide, all that. I'm all for nuclear. And I believe that we're not going to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and become energy independent, which we will do, of foreign oil, unless we use nuclear power and use it in great abundance. And it is not a problem of technology, it's a problem of what you do with the spent nuclear fuel. Whether you reprocess it or whether you store it someplace. And the technology is there, but the NIMBY problem is there. And the resistance of extremist environmental groups against nuclear power. The United States Navy has sailed ships around the world for more than 60 years with nuclear power plants on them and we've never had a problem/ So I think we need to store it and reprocess it. The French do, the Europeans do, there's no reason why we can't as well. I don't like obscene profits being made anywhere. And I'd be glad to look, not just at the windfall profits tax, that's not what bothers me. But we should look at any incentives that we are giving to people or industries or coroporations that are distorting the market. And again, it's a--, I bring it up again. We now have a farm bill that's winding its way through the Senate and House of Representatives that protects sugar. Why should we do that when we have seen an increasing cost of food and particularly those, including those that have sugar in it. Why shouldn't we, why should we raise protectionist barriers to sugar into this country? Why should we pay farmers, who make as much as $900,000 a year, additional tax dollars of yours and mine. If I were the president, I would veto that farm bill in a New. York. Minute.
