[W]e now know that the host of Friday's $1.4 million Republican National Committee fundraiser at the famed Beresford co-op in New York -- headlined by President Bush -- was none other than Paul Singer, the hedge fund billionaire and renowned "vulture capitalist."
Singer, a mega-donor for Republicans and conservative causes over the years, has pumped out more than $2.6 million in contributions over the past decade, according to a records search, to folks such as John McCain, Tom DeLay, Mitch McConnell, Christine Todd Whitman and dozens of others. He was a big promoter of Rudy Giuliani's late presidential campaign and gave $5,000 to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth back in 2004.

While Obama is having to make (courageously groundbreaking) speeches on the state of race relations in the United States in order to deal with the controversy over his pastor, Bush is raking in major cash with the aid of Sleazy McSingerton.

No need to defend this guy, right George? He's white and Republican.

So why should the White House or Republican National Committee not want to advertise that Singer was the host of such a fabulous luncheon -- 70 folks at $20,000 a pop?
Maybe it's his media nickname, "vulture capitalist," coined because his firm buys up debt held by Third World countries at a discount, then sues them to force repayment in full, sometimes for even more than the original amount.

Singer has said that buying "sovereign distressed debt" in such places as Peru or Congo serves the purpose of requiring countries to comply with contracts and that the countries can afford to pay but refuse to do so. Besides, it's less than 2 percent of his 31-year-old, $9.8 billion hedge fund.

These are the fine upstanding types who call themselves patriotic while pointing fingers at Obama for guilt by association. Funny, I didn't see Obama hiding anything in response to all the mudslinging. In fact, he faced the country he loves head on, honestly and with dignity.

Bush, on the other hand, is so cowardly that he wouldn't reveal that Singer was the host of his huge RNC fundraiser. I guess it's hunky dory as long as the vulture capitalist pulls in enough money. Nothing unAmerican about that, huh?

I just wanted to remind you that we are doing our quarterly fundraiser. Why do we do it? Not for me. I don't take a cent from this. I am lucky enough to be paid by the fine folks at Brave New Films.

But with Gottlaff dealing with the WGA strike and Paddy bracing for one of those special Indiana winters, I would sure appreciate your generosity in supporting them and their work here. As you can see, going through our archives, they are both prolific posters. So if you want an independent media form like this to continue giving you news not pre-cooked by corporate spin, this is one way you can make that a reality.

Just think about it. Would you rather give your money to a Blue Dog Democrat, an interest group that exists solely to prop up incumbents (I won't name names here) or us? Even $5 or $10 makes a difference.

Rudy skips minority debate to fundraise with Bo Derek

We can imagine how busy Rudy is. Running for president while distorting your record on 9/11, takes a lot of time and energy. So I can't say we were surprised to learn that Rudy (plus Romney, Thompson and McCain) was too busy to attend Thursday night's debate on minority issues hosted by Tavis Smiley.

But where was Rudy going? John Ehrenfeld, a BNF field producer, volunteered to track him down. Turned out he would be right here in Southern California accepting an endorsement from widely discredited Pete Wilson, who's known for exploiting racial division for votes, and pushing the horrible proposition 187. Then off to a $2300-a-plate fundraiser at the Biltmore Four Seasons in Santa Barbara with Bo Derek.

John attended the "open to anyone" endorsement announcement, but was quickly escorted out when they learned he was from Brave New Films! (Read John's blog about the whole event) Quietly though, Phillip snuck through and got the full deal on tape. Always send two people!
