What would you offer us?</p> <p>MIKE HUCKABEE: Well, the most important thing to, this afternoon we released a plan that, uh, does in fact deal with the resurrection of our economy overall but I think specifically to Michigan, when we face job issues in Arkansas, we know that theres several things: you have to look at the tax and regulatory burden and the litigation burden. If you have a country where those three issues are excessive . . . you end up creating job migration. You push jobs away. We have free trade agreements that arent being enforced on both sides of the border. And thats another reason that people are losing their jobs. Then theres the training issue, youve got to make sure that youre investing to keep peoples job skills up so that they are able to go to work and when companies are operating on the thinnest of margins one of the things that a government can do is to make sure that the community college and training programs are actually meeting the needs of the marketplace rather than just arbitrarily saying, Heres the catalogue of courses, we sure hope it works. The other thing that has to happen is to make sure that, that even our own government recognizes the value of manufacturing. I want us to get to a place where we have completely different type of fuel sources and one of the things that is happening is right here at this company a lot of efforts towards hydrogen as well as towards other forms of fuel sources. The hybrid cars that are coming out give us a lot more extension so that were not using as much oil but the long term goal is to be able to have domestically produced alternative energy sources that dont involve oil at all because well never have enough even with ANWR and the outer continental shelf to completely supply our needs. Therell always be the need for some imports and so the long term is get us off of the fossil fuels, um, I think if the government would commit that it would purchase vehicles that are alternative energy vehicles you help create a marketplace. Cut the taxes for the companies that are building those. Make it so that there are financial incentives for American companies who are building those models and thats another way to help get to that point.</p> <p>REPORTER: Do you support higher standards though?</p> <p>HUCKABEE: I think higher standards, um, you know, in the long term but they have to be reasonable and they have to be targeted out there so that the companies can make them work. Bodine is lecturer and diplomat-in-residence at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs where she teaches courses on the Iraq War and on US diplomacy in the Middle East as it relates to the Persian Gulf region and southwest Asia, and also serves as a resource for students interested in careers in public service.</p> <p>Bodine's over 30 years in the US Foreign Service were spent primarily on Arabian Peninsula and greater Persian Gulf issues, specifically US bilateral and regional policy, strategic security issues, counterterrorism, and governance and reform.
