Undersheriff Bill Lovingier showed TV, newspaper, radio, and new media around the facility, walking through the process a detainee would face.</p> <p>One change made to the facility because of the media coverage and resulting community outrage is the removal of razor wire on the interior holding pens.</p> <p>Lovingier explains the change and why the extra security is needed within the facility not just to prevent people from escaping, but also to prevent protest and counter-protest groups from clashing violently while being held.</p> <p>The ACLU has raised a concern about the process, saying Colorado law requires lawyers to meet with their clients within the detention center. The tribunals were called off in 2006 by the Supreme Court but then were set back up by the then Republican-led Congress.</p> <p>Since then the tribunals have faced a firestorm of international criticism, some US opposition and reverses that have delayed the opening of the first genuine trial.</p> <p>"It was not justice, it was ridiculous," the military attorney for Mustafa al-Hawsawi, Major Jon Jackson, said Thursday after a hearing in the ultramodern new court building set up at the US naval base on Cuba's southeastern tip.</p> <p>Appearances were kept up. The five accused appeared fit, each accompanied by a team of attorneys. Mahvish Khan is an American lawyer, born to immigrant Afghan parents in Michigan. Determined to bring the due process of law to the people imprisoned at Guantanamo, she volunteered to translate for the prisoners. She spoke their language, understood their customs, and brought them Starbucks chai, the closest available drink to the kind of tea they would drink at home. And they quickly befriended her, offering fatherly advice as well as a uniquely personal insight into their plight, and that of their families thousands of miles away.</p> <p>For Mahvish Khan the experience was a validation of her Afghan heritage—as well as her American freedoms, which allowed her to intervene at Guantanamo purely out of her sense that it was the right thing to do.
