Palin, who was a journalism major in at least one of the five colleges that she attended - could not or would not (more than likely could not) name one publication. "I've read most of them, again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media," said Palin. Couric pressed on for a real answer, "What, specifically?"

"Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me all these years."

Couric persisted. "Can you name a few?"

"I have a vast variety of source where we get our news," Alaska isn't a foreign country, where it's kind of suggested, 'wow, how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, D.C., may be thinking when you live up there in Alaska?' Believe me, Alaska is like a microcosm of America."

The London Handshake - Give Peace A Hand - instrumental

The Dalai Lama's handshake on leaving the Royal Albert Hall was passed along a human chain of over 2000 activists who took to the streets of the city of London, shaking hands with each other right up to the Chinese Embassy. The activists wore T-shirts saying "Give Real Talks A Hand" and, in Chinese, "One China -- Talks on Tibet". They joined a procession behind the handshake, led by three children, culminating in the delivery of Avaaz's 1.67-million global petition for meaningful dialogue between China and the Dalai Lama at the embassy.

The physical design of our homes, neighborhoods and communities shapes every aspect of our lives. Yet too often architects are desperately needed in the places where they can least be afforded. Edited by Architecture for Humanity and now on its third printing, Design Like You Give a Damn is a compendium of innovative projects from around the world that demonstrate the power of design to improve lives.

Architecture for Humanity was founded by its Executive Director, Cameron Sinclair, who has been a guest critic and lecturer at a number of schools and colleges in the United States. In the last year he has spoken at the Architectural League of New York, the Structures for Inclusion Conference, the 53rd International Design Conference in Aspen and at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. He has been a guest speaker on NPR, CBC (Canada), BBC World Sevice and CNN International. In August 2004 Fortune magazine named him as one of the Aspen Seven--seven people changing the world for the better.

"The Deeper News About the New Philanthropy"

10,000 families in the US, Katherine Fulton reported, have assets of $100 million or more. That's up from 7,000 just a couple years ago. Most of that money is "on the sidelines." The poor and the middle class are far more generous in their philanthropy, proportionally, than the very wealthy.

Philanthropy across the board is in the midst of intense, potentially revolutionary, transition, she said. There's new money, new leaders, new rules, new technology, and new needs. Where great wealth used to come mainly from inheritance and oil, now it comes from success in high technology and finance - and ideas and expectations from those business experiences inform (and sometimes over-simplify) the new philanthropy. Some of the great older institutions like the Rockefeller Foundation are radically reorganizing around new ideas and opportunities. But still the greatest amount comes from individuals, many of whom are now "giving while living" instead of handing over the task to heirs. - The Long Now Foundation
