Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger discusses the long-term implications of Chinese economic and political growth for United States security.

-----

Henry Kissinger discusses war and more with Peter Robinson as part of the Hoover Institution's interview series, Uncommon Knowledge.

War and the media - the two have not partnered so well since Vietnam. But in the days of the Internet, conservative talk radio, and Fox News, has the dynamic changed?

Kissinger says only a bit, and that the media remain heavily biased against military action.

Additionally, the 1960s concept that the U.S. government is somehow an evil enterprise is alive and well.

In this environment, Kissinger says our leaders need to present a clearer and more educated vision of the American role in the world - Hoover Institution

Henry Alfred Kissinger was the 56th Secretary of State of the United States from 1973 to 1977, continuing to hold the position of Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs which he first assumed in 1969 until 1975. After leaving government service, he founded Kissinger Associates, an international consulting firm, of which he is chairman.

Peter M. Robinson is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution, where he writes about business and politics, edits Hoover's quarterly journal, the Hoover Digest, and hosts Hoover's television program, Uncommon Knowledge. Robinson is also the author of three books: How Ronald Reagan Changed My Life; It's My Party: A Republican's Messy Love Affair with the GOP; and the best-selling business book Snapshots from Hell: The Making of an MB.

I think what is going to happen in the upcoming years—and we'll have to see how a new U.S. administration plays its part—is that essentially four dialogues are going to be taking place about the shape of the global order," says Gvosdev.

John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
Portsmouth, OH 07/09/08

TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: "My opponent also believes America would be better off by foregoing opportunities to sell in growing foreign markets. I disagree. Twenty-five percent of all jobs in this country are linked to world trade. In just five states -- Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin and Colorado -- over five million jobs depend on open markets. To promote job creation, I will expand foreign markets for our goods and services.

"Because the vast benefits of a global marketplace come at a cost for many, we have an obligation to help our workers receive the training they need when plants close and jobs are lost. Under my reforms, we will use our community colleges to help train workers for specific opportunities in their hometowns. And for older workers who have lost a job that won't come back, if they move rapidly to a new job we'll help make up the difference in wages between their old job and the new one."

(July 10, 2008) The world watched as Colombian soldiers "fooled" the rebel group FARC into releasing 15 hostages including 3 Americans and Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt. The Colombian government claimed the entire operation was implemented without guns, without ransom, and solely by the Colombians. But what about the $20 million dollars?

John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
Portsmouth, OH 07/09/08

TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: "[...] I'm the founder of a small, non-profit hospice in Wilmington, Ohio. [...] I'm sure you are aware that DHL is closing that airpark in Wilmington. We will lose 8,600 jobs. [starts to cry] Will you call for Senate hearings to investigate the DHL-UPS joint venture, which could be an antitrust issue? [...] We're just small people trying to live a life. And I want to be able to keep our nonprofits alive. Thank you."

JOHN MCCAIN: "I have been briefed, and I know about this situation. [...] This is a terrible blow. Um, if there's an anitrust implication that's associated with this, I certainly would seek a thorough investigation [...] We are in a period of transition to a global economy. That is of no consolation to anyone who is losing their job. [...] But we have to offer them an opportunity to get the education and re-training programs so they can re-enter the job market.

MCCAIN: "[...] I've got to look you in the eye and give you some straight talk; I don't know if I can stop it or not. Or if it will be stopped it. [...] In fact, some more straight talk: I doubt it. Ok? But I am for a thorough examination of this situation. [...]

MCCAIN: "In the meantime, there are manufacturing jobs that have been lost all over the state of Ohio, and it's been a terrible trauma and we have got to give people another opportunity. And you do that by going to the community colleges and saying: design education and training programs that are designed for the local job market and implement those programs. The private programs today do not work. They are total failures.

MCCAIN: "[...] But I also want to make a commitment [...] if someone has a high-paying job, particularly an older worker, and that worker has to take a low-paying job just to survive [...] that we would subsidize, with some of this job training money that's being wasted, that worker's salary [...] while they're undergoing their re-training and education programs.

MCCAIN: "[...] I believe in free trade; I believe that it's important to the economy."

We are in a historically unprecedented situation, says Leverett. U.S. military hegemony continues to be quite robust, but our standing and influence is in decline.

During the Association of American Geographers conference in Boston this year, a graduate student researcher presented a comparative analysis of Canadian and American identity in light of immigration policy. When asked in surveys, most Americans generally responded that they had a much higher tolerance of immigrants from Canada mainly because Canadians seemed more assimilable and like 'other Americans.' However, when the same survey was given to Canadians, less than thirty percent identified with Americans--differing mostly on political viewpoints. While clarifying immigration policy today, the Canadian Premier in Ontario gave an example of the stark contrast between the two neighboring states while the actions of the federal government in deporting undocumented students said otherwise.

While the United States is busy deporting undocumented immigrant students and the states in the deep South are retreating back into time by closing doors on students, our neighbors up North are also struggling with the issue. In Ontario, Canada, politicians have expressed a "don't ask don't tell" policy on undocumented immigrant students. Yet, an undocumented student, Sarah Leonty, with federal grants and great scholastic record, faces deportation just like our undocumented students in America.

OK my first edited vid WITH my new intro!!

TA DA!
PLEASE PASS THIS ONE ON!!!

things:
please obviously don't answer any question you are not comfortable with!
sorry about the age assumptions - i want to hear kids thoughts too!

here are the questions:

Do you live in the city, country or suburbs?

How much time do you spend in a car in a week?

What type of place did you spend most of your childhood?

How did that place change in the first 20 years of your life? (When were those first 20 years?)

What is the biggest tree you ever climbed?

How high did you go?

Have you ever caught or killed your own meat?

Have you spent a night or three out doors?

What animals if any did you see where you grew up?

Did you watch nature shows as a kid on TV?

If you could preserve 3 animals or organisms from extinction what would they be?
