China political analyst Harry Harding discusses future scenarios for China's rapid economic growth, and its implications for U.S. foreign policy.

-----

China's economic size will match that of the U.S. by 2035 and double it in total GDP by midcentury, concludes Albert Keidel in presenting his new policy brief, China's Economic Rise—Fact and Fiction.

Keidel and a panel of leading experts on China's economy and military discuss the success and substantiality of China's economic rise and addressed the U.S. and global implications of China's long-term economic growth.

Keidel is joined by Stephen Voth with the U.S. government, Gregory Foster of National Defense University, and Harry Harding of George Washington University. Carnegie's Michael Swaine moderates the discussion - Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

Director of Research and Analysis, Eurasia Group Harry Harding is a leading China specialist in the United States. He has advised several US Presidents on developments in the PRC; before the Tiananmen Square demonstrations he was brought to Camp David for informal discussions with the first Bush administration. He has written roughly 10 books, including the seminal "China's Second Revolution," regularly cited by Chinese officials as influencing their present 5-year plan.

Dr. Harding served on the political science faculties of Swarthmore College (1970-1971) and Stanford University (1971-1983) and was a National Fellow at the Hoover Institution. He then became Senior Fellow in the Foreign Policy Studies Program at the Brookings Institution (1983-1994), and, later, Dean of the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University, a post he held for more than 10 years in total ( January 1995 - June 30, 2005).

On August 1, 2005, Harding joined Eurasia Group, a global political risk consultancy, as the firm's Director of Research and Analysis.

Complete video at: fora.tv

Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger discusses the long-term implications of Chinese economic and political growth for United States security.

-----

Henry Kissinger discusses war and more with Peter Robinson as part of the Hoover Institution's interview series, Uncommon Knowledge.

War and the media - the two have not partnered so well since Vietnam. But in the days of the Internet, conservative talk radio, and Fox News, has the dynamic changed?

Kissinger says only a bit, and that the media remain heavily biased against military action.

Additionally, the 1960s concept that the U.S. government is somehow an evil enterprise is alive and well.

In this environment, Kissinger says our leaders need to present a clearer and more educated vision of the American role in the world - Hoover Institution

Henry Alfred Kissinger was the 56th Secretary of State of the United States from 1973 to 1977, continuing to hold the position of Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs which he first assumed in 1969 until 1975. After leaving government service, he founded Kissinger Associates, an international consulting firm, of which he is chairman.

Peter M. Robinson is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution, where he writes about business and politics, edits Hoover's quarterly journal, the Hoover Digest, and hosts Hoover's television program, Uncommon Knowledge. Robinson is also the author of three books: How Ronald Reagan Changed My Life; It's My Party: A Republican's Messy Love Affair with the GOP; and the best-selling business book Snapshots from Hell: The Making of an MB.

Pulling policy from rhetoric when listening to a politician isn't always easy. Good thing we got it on tape! Here are the fourteen concrete "I will" statements I found in McCain's economic policy speech in Denver on July 7th.

1. Make it easier for small businesses to grow and create jobs
2. Won't raise taxes-- will cut them where he can
3. Raising taxes in a bad economy eliminates jobs-- won't let that happen
4. Will double the child tax deduction from $3,500 to $7,000 for every dependent in every family
5. Will expand markets for goods and services, as with Crocs, the shoe company
6. Will reform unemployment insurance and retrain workers using community colleges-- will make up difference in wages between a worker's temporary job while they train for a better on and their old job
7. Do a stem to stern review of government, modernize how it does business, and save billions
8. Will veto bills with pork and shame those involved with them
9. Produce more of our own oil and gas to pressure market prices down
10. Create at least 45 new Nuclear Power plants, creating 700,000 jobs (including construction)
11. Develop clean coal technology, employing 30,000 in demonstration projects
12. Support gas free cars and create high tech jobs in the auto industry
13. Support wind and solar power development
14. Put the country ahead of personal and partisan interests

Catastrophe As Opportunity: from the Ashes at Lama The world in which we live spins wildly out-of-balanced. From natural resources being near exhaustion, industrial poisons indiscriminately dumped into waterways, chemical pesticides once used as weapons of war, now dumped by the gallons on our food sources and injected into our soils, while global warming gives rise to temperatures significant enough to cause catastrophic fires, hurricanes and the melt of the Polar Ice Cap. With warning signs like these, still most refuse to see the edge of collapse to which we all live perilously close. There are those however, who see this edge in clear view. Travel with us as we visit one such community of seers. Among Americas oldest

Laura Tyson, former National Economic Advisor to President Clinton, argues that infrastructure spending and health care reform should be two policies at the heart of the next President's economic recovery plan.

-----

As debate on the recession moves from "if" to "when" to "how long," The New School's Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis (SCEPA) and the New America Foundation host a panel entitled "It's the Economic Recovery Plan, Stupid," with top economists and business executives.

The panel will discuss the economic and political realities behind the debate on how best to stimulate the economy, including how a major public infrastructure investment might serve as a centerpiece of a longer-term recovery program.

SCEPA will also present a new publication, The Promise of Public Investment, based on its year-long series of forums designed to question conventional wisdom on U.S. economic policy - The New School

Laura D'Andrea Tyson is a professor and former Dean of the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Tyson served in the Clinton Administration from January 1993 through December 1996. Between February 1995 and December 1996 she served as the President's National Economic Adviser and was the highest ranking woman in the Clinton White House.

Prior to her appointment as National Economic Adviser, Dr. Tyson served as the sixteenth Chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, the first woman to hold that post. In that capacity, she was responsible for providing the president and his National Economic Council with advice and analysis on all economic policy matters, for preparing the administration's economic forecasts and for the annual Economic Report of the President.

From 2002 to 2006, Tyson was the first female dean of the London Business School. From 1998 to 2001, she was dean of the Haas School of Business. Tyson has been a member of the Council on Foreign Relations since 1987, a Director of ATT Inc. since 1999, and a Director of Eastman Kodak.

Tonight (May 21, 2008) Growth & Justice, an economic think tank, will hand out the awards for the worst political advertising in America. We'll bring you the winners of the non-partisan lampooning after they're announced. The UpTake's Mike McIntee gets a preview of some of the videos that are in the running from Growth & Justice President Dane Smith.

In our video preview we see examples of bad ads from the following categories:

Improper Props

Guilt By Association

Rated Sexxx

We also talk about ways to improve political advertising and how new media such as The UpTake may play a role in that.

There are many other categories and videos that will be seen tonight at the Pantages Theatre, 710 Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis, MN and start at 8pm. The headliner of the event is veteran journalist Aaron Brown, formerly of CNN and currently the Walter Cronkite Professor of Journalism at Arizona State University.

More:www.theuptake.org If you consider yourself middle class, then you probably have a right to be upset about taxes. When you include all local, state and federal taxes, you pay a higher proportion of your income in taxes than those who make more than $400,000 a yearAnd those who are poor pay a rate nearly twice as high as the rich.

The culprits for this disparity: a decade of tax cuts for the rich based upon the false belief that they trickle down to the rest of the economy, and tax hikes on the middle class and poor in the form of property taxes, or disguised as fees.

At a time when Minnesota's economy, quality of life and infrastructure are declining, protesters and Republican Congressional Representatives are calling for even more tax cuts. Growth and Justice'sAngela Eilers says the protesters are a vocal minority who are putting "me" over "we."

Robert E. Litan, Vice President for Research and Policy at the Kauffman Foundation and Senior Fellow in the Economic Studies and Global Economics Programs at the Brookings Institution,
visits Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss his book "Good Capitalism, Bad Capitalism, and the Economics of Growth and Prosperity" (co-authored with William J. Baumol and Carl Schramm).

Imagine this: a mere century ago, the purchasing power of an average American was one-tenth of what it is today. But what will it take to sustain that growth through the next century? And what can be said about economic growth to aspiring nations seeking higher standards of living for their citizens? In this important book, William J. Baumol, Robert E. Litan, and Carl J. Schramm contend that the answers to these questions lie within capitalist economies, though many observers make the mistake of believing that "capitalism" is of a single kind. Writing in an accessible style, the authors dispel that myth, documenting four different varieties of capitalism, some "Good" and some "Bad" for growth. The authors identify the conditions that characterize Good Capitalism--the right blend of entrepreneurial and established firms, which can vary among countries--as well as the features of Bad Capitalism. They examine how countries catching up to the United States can move faster toward the economic frontier, while laying out the need for the United States itself to stick to and reinforce the recipe for growth that has enabled it to be the leading economic force in the world. This pathbreaking book is a must read for anyone who cares about global growth and how to ensure America's economic future.

This event took place on March 20, 2008, as a part of the Authors@Google series.

Nature works beautifully, and in doing so provides every living thing within nature the resources to meet those beings needs so that each can grow towards full potential, from microbes to the largest whales!

Nature does this by sharing those resources, through the growth of each living being and through constant recycling, thus creating no waste.

We would do well to mimic natures observed proceeses and innate values - in general resources are not witheld from those that need them, and there is ample evidence of widespread altruism in nature too!

Nature is not a series of mechanical processes that science of old held, there is a sentience and intelligence at work here. Just because we do not speak the lingo, does not mean the inhabitants are stupid..

Western Civilisations idea that the human being is the most intelligent creature here, or that humanity is to dominate nature and exploit nature are blatantly untrue. We are differnet, yes, and so are all living beings.

It follows that there must be something within all livingbeings that allows them to get information and to respond appropriately to that information so as to thrive.

Current research into the heart suggest that the heart is also a sensing organ, and that the heart can transmit and receive electromagnetic signals. The heart emits an electromagnetic pulse that is 5000 times greater than that of the brain.

Find out more about this incredible research and what it implies..

http://www.heartmath.org/research/science-of-the-heart/soh_20.html

Note too that in school the heart is sentimentalised, and the brain is favoured as an information processor. Without acces to that part of us that connects to and reads nature, it is no surprise that so much of what we do does not work, and is in fact destroying the basis for healty life.
