" In The Spirit of Olympic Competition "

By Kru Williams 3-19-08

Tiger Balm's Internationals 2008 STAND UP Muay Thai team made quite a ROAR at the largest 20th Annual Martial Arts tournament in BC history at the Capilanoe College March 15th-16th.

Thousands of Martial Art Athletes from all walks of life and sporting backgrounds competed in the 2 day event. Our 1st time competitors have all experienced championship level competition before......but the rules were never like this!!! Unlike contemporary sports where specific muscle groups are needed to be enhance for success, STAND UP Muay Thai shows you muscles you never knew you had!

It was definitely a challenge, but the team of 8 Elite Athletes lead by their Muay Thai trainer Kru Williams came to compete. Martial Arts Schools from all styles of the spectrum participated. From Alaska to Oregon and even as far away as Manitoba. This truly was the highest representation of Martial Arts culture and talent showcased in the entire "GREAT NORTH WEST."

The Jr. STAND UP Muay Thai Team started off the day with the Jr. San Shou Competition. Ages 13-17.

1.) Brian Chin / Lvl. 1 Striker / 15 age /125 pds / GOLD Medal Champion

2.) Scott Falconer / Jr. Striker / 17 age / 130 pds / BRONZE Medal Winner

3.) Sadra Golchehreh / Lvl. 2 Striker / 17 age / 140 pds GOLD Medal Champion

The best thing out of the entire Jr. Division was a new tradition started by the Jr. STAND UP Muay Thai Team. Honouring the Coaches and the and the fighter at the end of the bout, whether you win or loose...shows your thankfulness for the chance to even compete. Always show and go out of your way to give the respect where respect is deserved. Instilling this in the Jr. program now teaches them the values and discipline needed for success or how to deal with defeat in any endeavour of life. This is the STAND UP Muay Thai Way !!! I was proud to hear from several other coaches and officials that this was the best Jr. San Shou Division they had ever seen!

Next Up were the big boys! Our 18 - 35 yr. old athletes competed in the San Shou Divisions.

1.) "Super" Mario Grant / Lvl. 2 Striker / 130 pds / 3 bouts / " highest viewed Tiger Balm 08 Youtube video" BRONZE Medal Winner

2.) Derek Stephan Gray / Lvl. 1 Striker / 176 pds / 4 bouts + "Sudden Death Victory" / Largest Division BRONZE Medal Winner

3.) Tony "The Tiger" Strong / Lvl. 1 Striker / 199 pds / 2 bouts / 1st time cross competing in Martial Arts!!! GOLD Medal Champion

4.) "The Canadian Tyson" Tyson Stroup / Lvl. 1 Striker / 205 pds / 2 bouts / Olympic Gymnasts hopeful SILVER Medal Winner

5.) Samir "The Gentle Giant" Rahimi / Lvl. 1 Striker / ??? / 1 bout / Lesson learned ...Never party the night B4!! BRONZE Medal Winner

What impressed me the most about this squad was their team unity and support of each other. Champion Basketball, Football, Soccer, Rugby, And even Gymnasts all elite athletes training and competing together as a one cohesive unit! No matter what demographic or cultural differences, thousands of citizens from all over the "Great Northwest" watched, cheered and praised all the athletes who came out to compete. Is that not what CANADA is all about....Eh?

Special Thanks to the Sifu Funk volunteers, officials, Ayron Howey, , Mr. Liquorice & Administration, and all the Martial Artist from all styles that trained hard to make this such an historical event for all of British Columbia! God Bless Canada!

Most of these athletes have had only 1 year of training or less while their Division is 2 years and under. They trained hard never gave up and showed heart....so success prevailed and shined!!! No matter your age, gender, or ability STAND UP Muay Thai can help support you achieve any fitness goals. Its a simple science that works for everyone, whether its to stay in shape, or just to get into it, we can help.
