All Bush has do is to make sure certain amounts of money go in the direction of certain important congressmen and that's end of any serious investigation. After all, one of the bravest members of Congress is Denis Kucinich who brought the article of impeachment in to the well of the House of Representatives. The House of Representatives must then try the president, and then after that it goes to the Senate for judgment. However, none of these things will happen because there's nobody there except for Mr. Kucinich who has the courage to take on a sitting president who is kind of a Mafioso. <br />Afshin Rattansi: How can it just be one person among so many hundreds of Congressmen who wants the impeachment of George W. Bush in these circumstances? <br />Gore Vidal: Well it's because we no longer have a country. We don't have a republic any more. During the last 7 or 8 years of the Bush regime, they've got rid of the Bill of Rights, they've got rid of habeas corpus. They have got rid of one of the nicest gifts that England ever left us when they went away and we ceased to be colonies -- the Magna Carta -- from the 12th century. All of our law and due process of law is based on that. And the Bush people got rid of it. The president and little Mr. Gonzales who for a few minutes was his Attorney General. They managed to get rid of all of the constitutional links that made us literally a republic. <br />Afshin Rattansi: You have often written about the United States' superpower status in terms of the history of previous superpowers. She is not moderate, so much as she is a part of the body where Glenn Beck recently had an operation. </p><p>Lately, the evidence of how horrible she is for Maine and the country has further accumulated. S<a href="http://cliffschecter.bravenewfilms.org/blog/8752-americans-against-escalation-in-iraq-tells-susan-collins-to-bring-our-troops-home">he has talked like a peace activist while in Maine because the war is so unpopular there</a>, but has voted again and again to enable the never-ending bloodshed in Iraq, which she and her allies justify by declaring it has gone down a little bit since we unleashed it on Iraqis and our own soldiers. </p><p>Wonderful.</p><p>On profiteering, she has chosen to simply look the other way while once again claiming to be all hot and bothered by it. When implored by Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey to hold hearings on Halliburton&#39;s no bid contracts, <a href="http://www.turnmaineblue.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=613">she just kinda shook her head and said &quot;nah-ahh.&quot;</a> Ditto for the disappearing hundreds of millions to billions in the &quot;rebuilding&quot; of New Orleans post-Katrina.</p><p>On telecom immunity, same old, same old for Susie. Maybe she&#39;ll yet listen to <a href="http://pressherald.mainetoday.com/story.php?id=163986&amp;amp;ac=PHedi">the wise advice of The Portland Press-Herald</a>. Sadly, I doubt it.</p><p>Finally, we have the issue of a women&#39;s right to choose. Which Susan makes sure to claim whenever she can that she is all for, except for that small hiccup of strongly supporting two reactionary Supreme Court judges in Roberts and Alito, who have telegraphed their intention to give coat hangers a bad name once again. Now, all it will take is one more atavistic, Collins supported judge to overturn Roe V. Wade, which just celebrated it&#39;s 35th anniversary. </p><p>Do you really want Susan Collins&nbsp;to be that deciding vote after her tango with Alito? Not unlike <a href="../blog/20616-huckabee-s-former-aide-contradicts-him-on-rapist-s-release">Mike Huckabee, with his release-the-rapist</a> stance, the Nation of Dick chooses to penalize <a href="../blog/21070-victim-gang-rape-cover-up-by-u-s-halliburton-kbr">the victim</a>:&nbsp;</p><blockquote><p>When <strong>[Jamie Leigh] Jones went to work for KBR</strong> in Texas, and later for its subsidiary, Overseas Administrative Services, <strong>she signed contracts containing mandatory binding arbitration</strong> clauses, which <strong>required her to give up her right to sue the companies and any right to a jury trial</strong>. Instead, the contracts forced Jones to press her case through private arbitration, which she did in 2006. In that forum, <strong>the company that allegedly wronged her pays the arbitrator who is hearing the case. For that she can thank Dick Cheney</strong>.</p></blockquote><p>It&#39;s the end of the year. We, too, should thank Dick Cheney for&nbsp; the many things he&#39;s done <strike>for</strike> to this country in 2007. And what better way to say &quot;thank you&quot; than to impeach. But I&#39;m veering off track: </p><blockquote><p><strong>At the time of the alleged attack on Jones, KBR was a subsidiary of Halliburton, the behemoth military-contracting and oil-technology firm</strong>. (KBR was sold off earlier this year.) So <strong>Jones is covered by the Halliburton dispute-resolution program</strong>, which was <strong>implemented when Cheney was Halliburton&#39;s CEO</strong>. The system bears the markings of <strong>Cheney&#39;s obsession with secrecy and executive power</strong>. <strong>On his watch, Halliburton, in late 1997, made it more difficult for its employees to sue the company for discrimination, sexual harassment, and other workplace-related issues.</strong></p></blockquote><p>That Dick. Always thinking of the little guy.<br /> </p><blockquote><p>It was a <strong>sign that secrecy</strong> is one of the reasons that <strong>Halliburton prefers arbitration.</strong> If its employees could sue the company in a regular court, <strong>reporters would have access to all the complaints and most of the documents in the cases</strong>. <strong>They could locate the plaintiffs and interview them</strong>. In effect, <strong>there would be some sunshine on Halliburton and KBR&#39;s corporate behavior.</strong> Instead, complaints made through <strong>private arbitration are virtually impossible to find and examine</strong> in any systematic way.</p></blockquote><p>Nonono. Silly me. It&#39;s just a big misunderstanding:</p><blockquote><p><strong>The company sold the new program as an employee perk</strong> that would create an &quot;<strong>open door&quot; policy</strong> for bringing grievances to management and as a forum for resolving disputes without expensive and lengthy litigation. In practice, <strong>it meant that anyone who had a legitimate civil-rights or personal-injury claim signed away his or her constitutional right to a jury trial</strong>.&nbsp;</p></blockquote><p>See? Dick was being his usual jolly, benevolent self offering his <strike>slaves</strike> employees &quot;perks&quot;. He was simply being all perky and give-y. &nbsp;</p><blockquote><p>It&#39;s not too hard to see why Halliburton and KBR want to keep Jaime Leigh Jones in arbitration. If the allegations she has made are true, and her lawyers can prove it, <strong>her case could be worth many millions of dollars in a jury trial</strong>.
